The responder is the one who will be choosing the final contract. On board 1 we have opened 1NT and shown our 4 hearts so partner can than choose the final spot.
Funny story, Once I opened 1 NT with 2 4 card majors and like you said after partner's stayman bid I answered 2 hearts on which partner rebid 3 NT. Of course as you said, I inferred that partner had a 4 card spade suit and I corrected to 4 spades. Partner then bid 5 hearts!!! After I recovered from my shock :) I had to wonder if they were cue bidding in support of spades since I have never seen or even heard of this bidding sequence. Then I remembered he was willing to have game played at 3NT, so how could they have a hand that is suddenly worth a slam try? I eventually decided that they had made some kind of mistake and passed 5 hearts. It turned out that partner did have a heart fit but wanted to play in 3 NT because of his intermediaries and because at MP's he thought it was a good shot. So he bid a "PSYCHIC STAYMAN" to indicate a 4 card spade suit and discourage a spade lead from defenders (he had Kx in spades). Being off an AK in a minor, with no way of getting rid of the cards and also QJxxx in trumps with divided AK between the hands I thought for sure that I was off at least 1. either QJ was falling doubleton or I was down. So I went for the hero play and made the 5 heart contract with the only other option available, a "Devil's Coup" in trumps. This is the only time that I've been able to play make this play in over 10 years of playing.
Yes, he was a very good player and we had many successful tournaments together. I just had to keep my portable defibrillator handy for when I needed to be revived from his "inventive" bids.
Thanks for letting me know. I find it hard to slow myself down. I can recommend pausing the video to give yourself a chance to process it. It might help.
As a fellow bridge instructor, I really appreciate these videos. I have recommended your site to all of my students. Thanks for posting!
Thanks Walter I really appreciate the support
Just tried discussing these bids the other day, but I forgotten them. So thanks for the refresher course.
Thanks for the lessons!
Iike it and follow always. You explain very nice way
Thanks!
Excellant
One of my peeves is when partners think that they can skip the stayman steps because they "know" you've got game.
ok never mind. 8 or more points should mention this up front ~!!
Thanks explained very well
What system on bidding are you using Peter?
I usually play 2/1. Whichever system you play stayman is still a good choice but the point values for using it may change.
I think Board 1 belongs in 4H after finding a heart fit and then counting Dummy points. Please reply.

What do you think of using Gerber over stayman to show slam interest?

haha nice - that was inventive bidding from your partner. I've never managed a devils coup - still on my list of things to do.
