Korea War battle - Taking of Longyuan Hill [Eng Sub] 龙缘峰攻坚战

  • This clip is the prequel to "Defense of Longyuan Hill". It's an excerpt from the 2016 Chinese war drama, "38th Parallel". The 1st company is tasked with infiltrating and seizing the strategic location of Longyuan hill. From there, they could block the escape route of UN forces fleeing south from North Korean territory. This would effectively help the main forces of the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (PVA) to eliminate UN troops.
On the educative front, the Chinese contemporary military tactics depiction here is the most realistic to date. In Korea War, PVA frequently sent detachment of troops to infiltrate behind UN frontlines. When in battle, PVA deployed 3-3 formations, with 3 soldiers forming a fire team, and 3 teams forming an attack squad. The 3 fire teams in an attack squad would advance in triangle, providing covering fire for each other as well as avoiding flanking enemies from the sides. Furthermore, with the 3-3 formation, soldiers are scattered far enough to reduce the efficiency of incoming explosives and heavy machine-gun fire. Most of the PVA's fire-support was provided by machine-gun squad, while the common soldiers took turns to fire their standard rifles to maintain a somewhat constant firing rate. Another often-deployed tactic was diversionary attack and flanking enemy positions from the back. All of these are accurately portrayed in this video.
    本片是“龙缘峰守卫战”的上半集,两部短片均剪辑自电视剧《三八线》。

My grandfather fought in the Peoples Volunteer Army when he was 17. He said that for ambushes he would lay still on the ground for 10 hours waiting for the order to attack while the Americans were only 50 meters away. He got injured by mortar shrapnel and ended up surviving the war but a lot of his friends died of disease, cold, and air strikes.

What I loved about this TV series is that they actually humanized the Americans/South Koreans instead of demonizing them just like what they usually did to the Japanese. Like the racial tensions between white and black American POWs or the South Koreans' sense of duty to their country, their frustration at their American allies treating them like cannon fodder and their desire to see their families again. The enemies aren't potrayed as evil, but as normal people with emotions on the opposing side. Most Chinese war movies, especially the WW2 ones, always made the audience to despice the enemy. Yet this series seemed to try to make the audience rooting for the Chinese yet at the same time not hating the enemy.

My grandfather enlisted in the US army a few years before the Korean war broke out. The soldiers lacked proper cold weather gear as there was a devastating shortage. As a result he was one of many who suffered from frostbite on his feet.
He survived and later served in Vietnam as a Marine.
My uncle found a book about the korean war that included a photograph of my grandfather in it. He was 19 and with his squad inside a snow covered trench.
It's sad that these things happen

My dad was a marine in Korea 1952-53. He told me a story of how a hungry Chinese soldier snuck into his bunker looking for food. Dad had been asleep. My dad had to decide wether to keep quiet and still, or try to get to his .45 pistol several feet away. Getting to the pistol and being able to fire it would have 50-50 chance of success, so my dad kept quiet and let the Chinese soldier leave empty handed

Asian war films have a tendency to romanticize war and sprinkle in a bit of propaganda here and there.
US war films (most of them anyways, and post the Vietnam War) focus on the brutal realities and loss of life/ones humanity, the darker aspects of war.
I haven't seen many war films out of Europe/Russia so it'd be interesting to add them to the comparison.

It's not even a movie, just a TV series which is moderately well made. This scene is decent. It doesn't quite categorize US troops as "bad guys", instead it focuses more on the brutality of war. AND for anyone bullshitting about "human waves", come on it is just a TV show, and it shows the infantry attacking formation in a quite brief way.

Ironically, this also sums up the Vietnam War as well. Though, it was slightly different in that we weren't getting into huge human wave battles with swarms of Chinese. We were legit getting our asses kicked in Korea. Vietnam was a combination of political restrictions (mainly this) and death by a thousand cuts. The military was forced to fight with one hand tied behind its back. That war should've been over as quickly as Korea, but some people saw a chance to take control for profit. Those people are still around, today.

The Chinese troops included many tough veteran soldiers who led others with valuable experience gained from the Chinese Civil war. The simple fact is that the U.S underestimated them considering them to be little more than 'peasant farmers'. It was only due to their more advanced weaponry (and due to the fact many of the Chinese soldiers were stick of war by that stage) that the U.S was able to bring things to a pragmatic stalemate.
All war is grounded in suffering. Suffering is grounded in craving which is both a cause and condition for suffering. Craving is grounded in ignorance. Ignorance is grounded in the existential human evolutionary process.

Sanity is the first thing to go on the battlefield. You've got to be nuts to stay there. Yes it's a job. You've got to go do it. But being under fire changes you. In ways a lot of people don't like. Sadly, i truly believe we enjoy killing each other. Being out there in the field it's you or them, that's it. Someone is not going home. At that point... you do everything you can to make sure your family sees you again. That's your focus. That's your sanity. Your only real salvation. Your unit becomes family. More then family. Seriously. I'm closer with the guys i fought with then i am my own siblings. We are still there for each other long after the shooting is over.

Imagine if these North Korean men were to witness the terrible state their grandchildren would be in under the Kim regime 2 generations later after sacrificing so much on the battlefield. They put their lives on the line for what they truly believed was a noble cause, only for it to be a means of laying the groundwork for a brutal dynasty of totalitarian dictatorship that starves its own citizens and strips them of basic human rights. If they could come back and see the discrepancy between the standard of living between the modern Korea’s, they’d undoubtedly be appalled of their actions and wish they fought for the other side.

    • @yanglan9604
      @yanglan9604 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Saudi Arabia, America's ally, is the real dictatorship. North Korea's per capita GDP was higher than that of South Korea until the 1970s. The poverty of modern Korea lies in that it took refuge in the Soviet Union after the Sino Soviet friendship, and China once abandoned it. The United States has imposed severe sanctions on North Korea for decades. Dictatorship does not necessarily bring poverty, and US sanctions will.

I suppose you know better than the governments of the warring nations did at that time? Total casualties for the sides are not too different about 550,000 and 650,000, but that does not include civilians, who suffered in greater numbers than soldiers. So while you want to grandstand about "who won and killed more of the enemy", you should consider, that in this war, like in the world wars, civilians died in greater numbers than soldiers, so trying to brag about kill numbers just makes you seem like a soulless ghoul. If any end result could be given to this war, then it would be that the korean people lost and to this day remain pawns in the two superpowers' wargames.

Excellent depiction of the PRC troop preparation and execution of the battle, however, it seems that the depiction of the opposing forces is over simplified. The troops in this battle are battle hardened, with the UN troops having been at war for longer than the opposing PRC forces. The notion that patrols on a ridge would calmly mill about in silhouette is prejudicial and speaks to the confirmation bias of the producers of the film, which denigrates the skills of the PRC troops. Interesting to note that, in total, the PRC lost more than the UN troops in this series of engagements.
Not taking anything away from PRC, US or Columbian troops here.

At 10:30 there is a machine gun showdown between the US and Chinese forces very reminiscent of a similar scene from the 1956 Chinese film Shangganling (The Battle of Triangle Hill). I wonder if that was an intentional homage.

That is realistic.. Americans think there's only 3000, but really there is 30000. Chinese troops were really good at camouflage and hiding their movements, using bivouac during day and only moving at night. This is how USA got two divisions completely wiped out and why USA had to suffer the longest retreat in all of USA history.
MacArthur underestimated Chinese time and time again, and he paid for it with American soldiers lives and with his own reputation and career when he got fired. Idiot wanted to invade china proper and even use nukes vs china..
And this was against an enemy that had bolt action rifle and nothing else compared to air power, machine guns, mortars, tanks, everything.

actually, most South Korean sodiers would be driven into the sea without the help of their big American brother. The South Korean fighted so badly that even their North brother could beat them into pieces.

Yea. You believed him. Laughable. I met a retired decorated Marines told me otherwise. When you smell Chinese Food, run the other way. With poorly equipped arms, they chased UN forces from Yalu River to below 38tg parallel. These were veterans who fight Japanese in WW2 who knew how to maneuver at night. They were always one step ahead. Problem with US forces were they were never taught to properly retreat.

@Danyelpaladin the Impetuous the americans realised after the korean war that they were using shit weapons. Like their carbines that were used exensively couldn't even kill a chinese soldier in 3 shots. Can't blame the common soldier for the mistakes of his commander
