As I just have set up everything for recording in a new room, this once again came in so timely. I can so easily throw a blanket over my sheet-music-stand behind me really
hey man...bought myself a $100 Gazebo / Pergola (200cm x 200cm) and placed it in my basement on a noise absorbing rug. I left the outside "walls" off and placed moving blankets on all five sides. Got myself a 10M led strip for the inside and some bass traps in the corners and foam on the inside off the blankets. Super easy set-up for recording with my D18 and singing at the same time straight into my iPhone using the Roland Go Pro mix. Call me cheap but I just love my little "tent" inside my basement. Nice and cozy. Love your channel man!!

The tip about the difference in db in the digital domain is really a gem. Have battled too long with a Focusrite 2i2 and it’s noisey preamps. Found myself turning the gain on the preamp up to around 3 o clock and in around that spot would drastically change in gain either too little or clipping into obliteration. Boosting in post or boosting the gain while recording was giving me the exact same result.

AMAZING VIDEO. I was hung up for the longest on why I was getting lots of noise out of my mic while recording my acoustic guitar and this explained it perfectly. I initially thought that it was my interface or even my cables causing this issue, but that’s clearly not the case lol. I record in an extremely untreated area (and really don’t have a way of fixing this due to current living situations). This is great to know for when I am able to properly treat an area so that I can record my acoustic properly and get a greater sound from it. Amazing video!

I am relatively new in audio recording and post. I don't understand why would ppl think increasing gain will pick something better (like the content) and pick something else less (like noise). That is very illogical. I have some experience with photo processing though. And both are signal processing so can be compared. In photography it is a common guideline to take photo with maximum exposure without clipping. This gives you the best opportunity to capture details on the darkest areas. In post you can adjust the shadows however you want as long as you captured the details. Same principle can be applied for audio. Think there are very softly played parts of a guitar piece intentionally to create texture. In low gain, they will be lost and that will be an injustice to the talent. So I would say for top musicians to capture the most delicate sounds (weakest signals) the photography principle can be applied. The room noise, reverberance, hiss etc. needs to be solved with different approaches but not primarily by reducing gain. Also applying the same photo processing principle I can say that boosting the levels at post will incur new noise. In your example even though they were not audible it is a phenomenon that is supposed to happen by principle. Try a photo that was taken with low exposure (low gain) and then brighten it up in photo editor, you will see it introduces noise. If you compare it with a photo that was taken with good exposure I mean.
Boosting the gain will always pick up more room acoustics. Lowering the gain and moving closer to the microphone will capture more source and less room. Engage the low cut filter on the mic if there is one or use a high pass filter in the daw to eliminate any proximity effect that might happen from close mic'ing. Also. don't sing or play the instrument any louder than is necessary to avoid putting more acoustic energy into the room, which translates to more room in your mic.
I’ve recorded a good deal of acoustic at home and I’ve found that close miking the bridge of the guitar with a SM57 is a pretty reliable way to get a consistent controllable sound
In The Mix weirdly close miking. I’ve had to record a lot of double bass too and found that close miking the bridge gives the most controllable sound. Miking over the sound hole is the worst (counter intuitive I know since it’s called the ‘sound hole’). I’ve discovered this mostly by trial and error and talking to studio engineers. I’d just like to add that I think your video above is excellent because it’s not prescriptive. It leaves you to decide which approach (more room or more close miking or a blend) you want to pursue.

When I'm going to record my voice, I speak closer to the mic and speak as quiet as I can without whispering, not only because my voice sounds better when I speak quieter, but also because when I speak quieter the eco of my room will also be quieter, and speaking close to the mic makes my actual voice louder than the noise and reverb of the room. Does that make sense?
An easy and cheap way to massively cut down on the noise from recording, especially vocals, is to make a portable sound booth. Take a cardboard box (make sure the box is larger than your microphone and stand), then fully line the inside with pieces of "egg crate foam" (the kind you put on beds). Be sure the microphone is centered inside of the box when you record and have the open side of the box facing you. Your voice will enter the box and most of the sound waves that aren't picked up by your microphone will be muffled by the foam lining. I learned this trick from a voice actor a few years ago. It's not perfect but it's a good alternative if you can't afford to attach large soundproofing pads to your wall.

if you are recording voice, you can just get inside your bed below the sheets. god tier amazing noise reduction, it's awkward and hard to get a consistent mic distance tho.

I have to admit that when I listened back on my monitors before filming the discussion part of the video, I was amazed by the difference. I thought in such a huge room it would be a very small difference!
Hey! After watching your video earlier today i ran some tests today regarding pre-amp gain and i've been getting very different results. My equipment is on the cheaper side: UR22 first generation interface with a behringer condenser and a shure PG mic. With the behringer it really doesn't seem to make a lot of difference whether i apply 100% or 50% gain, when normalized the noise-floor and recording is essentially the same, but at 10% gain the signal to noise ratio worsens by a lot. With the shure PG recording at 100% (or maximum level before clipping) nets the absolute best sound, with almost no noise at all. 50% introduces some noise and 0% get's almost no signal and a lot of noise. The question now is where is the deciding factor. I'm not sure whether these caracteristics are applied by the mic, by the pre-amp, or both. But i'll be sure to run some tests from now on every time i'm operating new equipment. Maybe everyone should do this. It takes 2 minutes at most if have the slightest idea of what you are doing. I'm actually quite ashamed i didn't try this before, but it seems i wasn't really wrong recording to the maximum level before with my own stuff. Actually, nowadays i just slap Izotope RX into everything, so i guess i didn't even needed to be thinking so hard about this :)

Note that Edison in FL has a pretty good denoiser, it works pretty much works like RX's. Just press S to enable the spectrogram view.

I haven’t tried that one yet, so just a couple of inches away or more like foot?

When I'm going to record my voice, I speak closer to the mic and speak as quiet as I can without whispering, not only because my voice sounds better when I speak quieter, but also because when I speak quieter the eco of my room will also be quieter, and speaking close to the mic makes my actual voice louder than the noise and reverb of the room. Does that make sense?

You have to take the Proximity Effect into account, depending on the type of microphone you use
An easy and cheap way to massively cut down on the noise from recording, especially vocals, is to make a portable sound booth. Take a cardboard box (make sure the box is larger than your microphone and stand), then fully line the inside with pieces of "egg crate foam" (the kind you put on beds). Be sure the microphone is centered inside of the box when you record and have the open side of the box facing you. Your voice will enter the box and most of the sound waves that aren't picked up by your microphone will be muffled by the foam lining. I learned this trick from a voice actor a few years ago. It's not perfect but it's a good alternative if you can't afford to attach large soundproofing pads to your wall.

Hey! After watching your video earlier today i ran some tests today regarding pre-amp gain and i've been getting very different results. My equipment is on the cheaper side: UR22 first generation interface with a behringer condenser and a shure PG mic. With the behringer it really doesn't seem to make a lot of difference whether i apply 100% or 50% gain, when normalized the noise-floor and recording is essentially the same, but at 10% gain the signal to noise ratio worsens by a lot. With the shure PG recording at 100% (or maximum level before clipping) nets the absolute best sound, with almost no noise at all. 50% introduces some noise and 0% get's almost no signal and a lot of noise.
The question now is where is the deciding factor. I'm not sure whether these caracteristics are applied by the mic, by the pre-amp, or both. But i'll be sure to run some tests from now on every time i'm operating new equipment. Maybe everyone should do this. It takes 2 minutes at most if have the slightest idea of what you are doing. I'm actually quite ashamed i didn't try this before, but it seems i wasn't really wrong recording to the maximum level before with my own stuff.
Actually, nowadays i just slap Izotope RX into everything, so i guess i didn't even needed to be thinking so hard about this :)
