    When doing the tug check, retract the front gear so that they just hover over the ground, that way if you pull too hard they will not get damaged, plus if the tug fails the trailer would only drop 1 inch or so, keeps everything safe.

    Great video. I wish you had 5 to 6 inches of clearance on your bed rails to the 5th wheel.

      Yeah that looks awfully close.

      We are right at 5" when on level ground. I would like a bit more but that small 5th wheel is too low for the height of my truck so I have to run it that low. I keep a real close eye on it when I get in unlevel situations.

    Nice job on the lineup, visually checking your 5th wheel jaws is must, and if I might add one piece of advice, I would just lift your landing gear just a touch just fairly off the ground, when you tug your not stressing out your gear, and if anything should fail it will not drop much and hurt anything. That is what I do as a truck driver and as an RV'er I've had semi trailers pop loose on a tug check, and I can feel it and I catch the trailer before it falls on the frame of the truck, it's still on the 5th wheel.

    You always want to lift the front landing gear an inch or two when hitching to relieve stress on them

    A little trick on setting the height, once you have your trailer height set just right for your truck, use a bit of nail polish to paint a line on the forward landing gear. Use that as a reference point to help set yourself up for future hookups.

      I'm trying to figure out if this would actually work all the time... either way, the lippert auto level system has a rehitch setting that can set your RV at the right height for your truck.

    Your instructional videos are really good, Patrick! I was ready to go try it myself, but suddenly remembered I don’t own a 5th wheel! 😂

    I think the way you hook up the emergency break cable is the way to do it!! Looks very secure.

    Really good instructional video. I have never watched an actual demonstration of hitching up a fifth wheeled rig. Great explanations of the steps involved. I am also amazed that your 'series' of videos don't have more followers, ( disappointed really ). I think that the entire RV industry is really on its knees as of this Spring. Most dealerships around central Massachusetts are way overstocked with inventory. Now if the rates at campgrounds would modify some, financially more people might return back to camping............ your thoughts, Bill S.
    P.S. Next video, demonstration of driving with the fifth wheel , and setting up at the campsite ? Show us that leveling system on the rig please.

      Thank you so much! There are just so many RV youtube channels for people to watch theses days. We do appreciate the views we do get and I always hope that maybe we are able to help some out with the videos.

    We are in your beautiful state for the eclipse in Bloomington. The weather is nice. Were at Jelly stone Park at Lake Monroe. Its a nice park but needs some work. I know they opened 6 weeks early for the eclipse. Hope y'all get to see the eclipse. I am a retired 5th grade teacher. Hope the rest of your scool year is great!! God bless.

    Solid video. I don't even want a 5th and I watched the whole thing. i guess maybe for a "knowlege is power" kind of thing.

    A good simple video on how easy the hookup is on a fifth wheel.
    Is there a reason you didn't use the rehitch setting on the auto level to get your RV at the right height for your truck?
    Also, you may be able to raise your rear stabilizers so you no longer have to remove the feet.

    • @TravelswithDelaney
      @TravelswithDelaney  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I tried to raise those stabilizers but they are already tight against the underbelly so I couldn't. I honestly just always forget to use the rehitch setting.

    • @mum2jka
      @mum2jka 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@TravelswithDelaney that’s a shame on the legs. I know for us a really good benefit of a fifth wheel is how quickly we can be ready to travel. But like you we always forget to use the auto level to rehitch too.

    thank you Patrick - as always your video is helpful ... what are you thoughts regarding slider hitches for short bed trucks (we have ford f250) .. they add so much more weight and larger footprint .. do you find yourself in many situations while traveling that turning clearance is an issue ... have any idea what turning degree is good enough?

  • @suzannewise8045
    @suzannewise8045 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    My 2017 Ford F350 has a camera on back of cab that looks down into the bed of the truck.

    • @TravelswithDelaney
      @TravelswithDelaney  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That would be so nice. I think the Chevrolets can get one in the higher trim levels.

  • @EverythingRVbyPat
    @EverythingRVbyPat 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Patrick,
    Have you had any clearance issues between the truck and the trailer? It looks as though you don't have much clearance from the angle of the video. I could be completely wrong because of the camera angle. When I first got my first 5th wheel I had to adjust several times and I still touched a few times and ended up bumping the bed rail.
    Just wondering... I'm going to be watching a lot more of your videos in the upcoming days as I tend to binge watch channels. LOL!!!
    All the best,
    Pat
