  • Tour Scotland travel video of a road trip drive, with Scottish music, on old Military single track roads on ancestry, genealogy, history visit to the Highlands of Perthshire. A network of military roads, sometimes called General Wade's Military Roads, was constructed in the Scottish Highlands during the middle part of the 18th century as part of an attempt by the British Government to bring order to a part of the country which had risen up in the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. The roads were constructed to link the Central Lowlands with a series of fortified barracks located strategically across the Highlands. George Wade, born 1673, died 14 March 1748, was a British Army officer who served in the Nine Years' War, War of the Spanish Succession, Jacobite rising of 1715 and War of the Quadruple Alliance before leading the construction of barracks, bridges and proper roads in Scotland. He went on to be a military commander during the War of the Austrian Succession and Commander in Chief of the Forces during the Jacobite rising of 1745.
