*** If you want to see him playing guitar:
    - Play That Funky Music + Hollywood Swinging at LA Forum medley
*** There you'll see him playing bass as well and here:
    - Prince - Pass the Peas (ft Maceo Parker) + Bass Solo (Live) Paris, Stade de France - 30/06/2011
    - While my guitar Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
    *** Playing piano?
    - Piano Medley, Lovesexy Tour
    - Prince on the piano in soundcheck ('Summertime')
    *** Drums?
    - It's Gonna Be A Beautiful Night
    - America Live Official Video
Trivia. I've watched him at a gig in Madrid duelling drums with his drummer.

I think if you dig in you will see his unbelievable talent for writing, playing multiple instruments, and performing live! There will never be anyone like him again. Yay! I can't wait to watch Prince with you!!!

You have no idea. There’s 3 levels of Purple shredder.
Level 1: Studio tracks serve the song first. He was a songwriter and producer after all.
Level 2: Live main shows and TV appearances. Longer solos and lots of flair and audience connectivity.
Level 3: After shows, sound check, rehearsals and private events. Next level virtuosity. He’s in his own world playing for himself. Lots of covers.
Check out his performance of a Santana medley at his Miami Glam Slam Club after show in 1994.
My favorite solo is from a small club in Europe in 1988. A cover of Just My Imagination. Not what you’d expect but then the solo comes on and just builds slowly into something quite special.

    Hi Mark,
This was a brilliant reaction, thank you so much for your honesty and humility. These are such rare qualities online nowadays that it immediately struck a chord and got my attention.
You are 100% correct about the bottom end of this recording, the tape degradation over the decades has completely eroded the bass guitar and bass drums too, all we’re left with is narrow band tones and percussion.
If you have a look for the remastered Purple Rain concert from Syracuse (which is where this performance was from) you will here it in all its glory. Then you will be truly astonished by the depth of colour in the sound.
A few other people have made a few excellent suggestions here in your comment section about other Prince performances to check out.
    Motherless Child - yes
    Ride - yes
8 times prince went beastmode - yes
But I would also have a watch of Empty Room from the Montreux Jazz Festival too. In fact if you can manage to get your hands on both show 1 and show 2 recordings I would definitely suggest an evening of just sitting back and growing into Prince.
He is a world in himself. He is missed dearly and loved greatly.

@@JohnAnderson42 Thanks. And that tells me exactly what I expected - that you are not a musician and have no idea what you are talking about.
Also, what's all this about "Prince fibbed" a lot in his early days - seriously, what is wrong with you? You claim to be a fan, yet seem to only want to put our negative stuff. You don't really know who said what, who made him say whatever and whether he was intentionally misdirecting (which he did often, either to defend against prying in to stuff that wasn't anyone's business anyway, or to help build the mystique). Furthermore, I suspect you have NO idea what it was like to be a black 17 year-old trying to break in to the late 70s music industry.

Watch the 2021 remaster of Prince with Jeff Lynne, Tom Petty and Steve Winwood doing George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps at the 2004 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame broadcast and you'll never doubt Prince as a guitarist again. No one does.

Can't blame this guy for not knowing. There are older guys on TH-cam, heavy metal looking and 'impress me' attitude wearing guys who all missed Prince as a guitar great despite knowing who he was for the last 30 years. Why? IT's b/c Prince could do it all. Simple. How does a record company market a guy who can do absolutely everything? You can watch bass players - bass greats like Victor Wooten talk of Prince's amazing bass lines. You can hear keyboard players talk of how unique his playing was on the piano. So, this young guy doesn't know and should not be shocked he doesn't know. Although Prince was one of the best ever on guitar, his music was never 'all guitar'...his guitar playing was to serve the song...not the other way around. There are too many to mention but, if you want to know what I mean - take his biggest song ever, When Doves Cry and see how he mixed the guitar at the 3rd part low into the mix If you strain to hear it, you'll hear some amazing playing. Any one else, would mix that right into your face!!

I have been a fan for over 30 years but was even starting to doubt myself at the start of the video when you were dissing him. a bit. Then seeing your reaction really made me smile! I'd totally forgotten about this performance. I think Prince is truly under-rated by so many people because his music spans so many different styles and genres... and even us fans forget about what there is out there!

Great reaction. This 70yo boomer granny was thinking “can I offer you some ketchup on that crow on a hat you fixing to eat?😂”
Seriously though, please understand this was a time when musicians ***had*** to be on top of their game with their skills, especially in live performances because there was no tech for live correction. With the fierce completion, mediocre, good and excellent performers came and went. Spectacularly talented acts are the ones generally being recommended and it will be up to younger guys like you to keep this legacy of musicianship from dying. I’d like to think someday some young prodigy might watch these videos and be inspired to channel Prince and take it to another galaxy just as Prince (and MJ) did with James Brown’s (aka the Hardest Working Man in Soul/King of Soul) 1960’s onstage theatrics and vocalizations. For more of his guitarmanship I’m sure others are rightfully suggesting you hook up “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” performance for George Harrison’s Induction into the Hall of Fame. Prince was inducted in the same ceremony and Harrison’s son overcame his mom’s objections to invite Prince to join the homage to his dad (he also played and his grin lasted all the time Prince played. Keep your eye on the guitar at the end, lol.
For more guitarmanship and band cohesiveness from that era, have you considered a live Queen performance like Somebody to Love Monreal, and their Live Aid set at Wemberly.
Please react to Prince’s live “I Would Die 4 U/Baby I’m a Star” (with Sheila E.) from 85. It’s a longer one and this is classic Prince in Energizer Bunny meets James Brown mode. in Montreal or Live Aid?

His earlier stuff was synthetic heavy but try Empty Room from Montreax for a great guitar showing.

Great reaction! Prince is the greatest performer and musician I've ever seen and I've seen most of the greats💜 There's a considerable amount of epic guitar solos for Prince but the one I've been watching again is Bambi Live at The Tokyo Dome. LOLLOLLOLLOLLOL Honey I'm an American and your accent threw me for a loop didn't understand the bulk of what you were saying, are you English or Scottish? But I sort of got the gist you ended up eating crow at the end huh lol. I have loved Prince since I was 15 back in 1979 so I know a bit about this beautiful man. The next ones you might truly like are... Motherless Child the video says Prince Motherless Child Live! (I'd give you the link but they wont let me on this site same for the rest in this video hes wearing a sweater and white pants and a cap), The Question Of You (he plays a 2nd song with that too called The One and the right video is 11 minutes long it says Prince The Question of U - Live 2004 hes got short hair and a light colored shirt on), and a song called The Ride the video says Prince - The Ride live, where's hes wearing black and white (there are 2 videos of him playing that song but I personally like the one where hes in black and white). The only way I can give you the right videos is to describe to you what hes wearing. I really hope you check these videos out so you can get just a taste of what my mans like and check out all his other videos where hes playing the bass guitar, the piano, the drums ect he plays at least 27 different installments I promise you once you get to know this man your gonna wonder how you ever lived without him before!!! Peace... I forgot one... Its the video he did for the movie score of Batman called Bat Dance, watch the actual video he did not just the video with no movement, the one with him dancing and playing the guitar watch. Peace

As a Prince fan, i would argue that this might be the weakest song on the Purple Rain album, but it fit the story for the movie and it’s easily accessible as a pop song. On the album it’s proceeded by Let’s Go Crazy and followed by The Beautiful Ones, both of which are superior songs. IMO.
If you want a guitar centric Prince song, please watch this. You will not be disappointed. It’s more of a deep cut that most people do not react to.

Great reaction! You had all the Prince fans grinning in anticipation when you gave your comments midway. One of my favorites is Prince's cover of Motherless Child, it has some great guitar work and it perfectly displays his ability to engage and control his band as well as engage and control the audience.

Look for "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" together with Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, Steve Winwood, Billy Preston and the Heartbreakers and remember ... Prince was only was half as good as he shows us here.

I always tell people that Prince wasn't even trying on that fabled "while my guitar gently weeps" performance. This a far better solo and a better showcase of his abilities as a guitarist.
Note also, his guitar is not plugged in. HOWEVER, that doesn't mean that he was faking it, his guitar had a built-in wireless unit, the feed of that system went directly into his amps, so it didn't need to be plugged in.
