I have played The Last Of Us Part 1 at least a dozen times, & I can say that this show is the best videogame adaptation ever! It does what any good adaptation should do; be mostly loyal to the original source material, but change just enough so there's something new yet still enjoyable to watch. For example, about 80% of what we see in the 1st 3 episodes is from the 1st few levels of the game, but the remaining 20% is things like expanded backstory & more development for certain characters we didn't originally get. Here's hoping Season 2 is as good & faithful when they adapt Part 2.
1 of the differences between the show & the videogame is that in the show the outbreak began in 2003 when George W. Bush was President (as we saw in Episode 1) instead of 2013 like in the game, which means gay marriage wasn't legal nationwide in The U.S. yet. So, theoretically 1 additional reason why Bill & Frank chose to live on their own instead of in the Boston QZ was because they were a gay couple & they might have been discriminated against for that.
Bill is the only person in the history of storytelling to win the apocalypse. Also, love your rampant paranoia throughout this episode. Lol That was my energy watching it.
A fun fact about Joel saying the cordyceps got into food was that it is heavily hinted to be flour. The entire first episode Joel An seems his daughter keep avoiding food with flour in by accident like pancakes for his birthday or the neighbours biscuits
The way I always thought of it is that Bill taught Frank how to survive. Frank taught Bill how to live. They complimented each other. You could also argue that Bill alone would not have traded with Joel and might not have survived the night raid, because his fence wouldn't have been reinforced. Beautiful episode.
Fantastic episode. Never knew a "Nick Offerman going full Ron Swanson during the apocalypse and finding love" story could be so poignant and well acted. No idea if this has been discussed by the show/game writers but I wouldn't be opposed to a season/spin off that's an anthology of one-off stories like this set in this universe.
"On the nature of daylight" one of the most beautiful compositons ever by Max Richter. It was used in The Last of Us, Arrival, Shutter Island, The handmaid's Tale and many more. It's unbelievable how much it's told alone by this track

🙄 Not this pedantic nonsense again. IRL ants infected by cordyceps are called “zombie ants” in the scientific literature, so the “infected, not zombies” whining is pretty misguided and pointless.
4:55 No, Tess said that the cordyceps also grows in the ground and if you step on it, it will alert other infected. Like in Ep2 when Joel killed that one and the cordyceps went into the branches of cordyceps on the ground and alerted the others. Btw the infected are not zombies, they are way more complex than regular zombies…zombies are undead, so reanimated corpses. The infected are not dead, they are host to the cordyceps and the cordyceps needs it’s puppet alive to be able to control them like the scientist said in the beginning of ep1. Zombies can only be killed if you destroy the brain, the infected you can kill them by shooting at the body, strangulation, etc. In TWD for example if an old person dies from old age or some medical shit they come back as a zombie, in TLOU universe if someone dies that’s it because the cordyceps can’t infect dead people. And there is different stages of infection each one being unique and that is one of the reason I love the infected, they are so much complex than zombies.
Well, you can kill an infected like you kill a normal person if it's at the stage of runner and stalker, but I don't think that works for clicker and bloater, considering at this point the fungus have completely taken over the brain and I assume the fungus have also partially/completely devoured the host's insides and replaced it with its own.
@@UltimaTheSeraph It’s the same with Clickers and Bloaters; the difference is that with Clickers, the cordyceps has evolved, and it grows around the brain and out of the eyes and creates like an armor around the brain to protect the host, and with Bloaters, the armor is even stronger. Clickers still die if you shoot them in any part of the body or even use hand-to-hand weapons, but it will take longer, and you can burn them. Ellie has stabbed them in the chest and neck, and they die. Bloaters are the same, but it will take even more.
@@reynaldolorenzo8409 hmmm...I don't remember much from the game, because I tend to do headshots, except for bloaters where I used molotovs...but in the show, Joel shot a clicker multiple times in the abdomen, yet it was still fine, and only when he shot its head that it died. So I think both medium have slightly different lore regarding the infected.
@@UltimaTheSeraph Nope, Joel did shoot the Clicker in the abdomen, but the Clickers are really tough, so you need to shoot them a lot in the body to kill them, but you can, and I think it was in episode five that Ellie stabbed a Clicker in the chest or collar bone. And in episode five, when all of the Clickers came out of the hole and everyone started shooting at them in the body, they were dying too. All stages of the Infected are alive; the cordyceps just evolves and gets stronger to protect the host.
@@reynaldolorenzo8409 hmmm...I guess I mistook them with how the stages work with real life Cordyceps, as irl when the fungus is growing out of its host's shell is the stage of the host dying and eventually died. It does pose a question; since the fungus devours its host's organs, how does its host stay alive missing a few organs? And considering a clicker and a bloater must have been a long time infected, how do they get their nutrition for that long, if they don't devour the host's entire organs? There is a theory (show related) that the vines provide nutritions for the Cordyceps, as they're attached to the ground, hence when they dried out means they no longer absorbs minerals and other nutrients.
Genuinely one of the best episodes of television I've ever seen, and without question one of the best bottle episode love stories I've ever seen. This is an episode that's going to go down in TV history.
Such a beautiful, heartbreaking episode. It stayed with me for a while. It was nominated for several Emmys- both Murray Bartlett and Nick Offerman received acting nods. I truly hope they win.
We rarely see genuine older queer love represented and it was done so beautifully. Big props to everyone involved in that heart wrenchingly sweet episode ❤
The thing that's important to remember, and that makes this hit harder than anything else... Before the end of the world, 2003, was a year before the first official legalized same sex marriage in the US. the world was on its way, but by no means, openly accepting of homosexual couples. Bill was never allowed to live as himself. The world has to literally end before he was able to be himself freely. Frank was his first time being who he truly was. This episode is a masterpiece in storytelling and acting. In the final scene with Bill and Frank having their say together you see them going to the stores, appreciating the flowers, everyone Frank fought with him over 17 years before. He wanted as life, not survival, and Bill gave that to him.
As someone who hasn't played the game, Bill & Frank are some of my favourite characters. They accomplished so much in 1 episode! Was a whole love story, but not convoluted or over stuffed in such a short amount of time
The episode was honestly a masterpiece. The writing, direction, cinematography, the *acting*. Who knew Nick Offerman had that in him?! That first kiss between Bill and Frank is still etched in my memory. It was like a man dying of thirst in a parched desert getting his first gulp of cool, life-giving water. A while ago I saw a comment about those two that I thought made an excellent point. Bill knew how to survive, but Frank taught him how to live. It’s a story that will break your heart, but is one of the most powerful romances I’ve ever seen.
I think the not "over stuffed" nature is what sells it, it just dips into little slices of their lives. meeting each other, having a fight, clearly getting over it and compromising (having joel and tess over, but having the meal outside), having good times (strawberries), and bad (the raid) and then the end of their long journey. just little things that happen in any life together (maybe not as extreme but you know what I mean). they didn't have to stuff anything else in the story to convince us they were in love, they just made it relatable to anyone.
Fun fact: the episode's title Long Long Time is a reference to "Bill and Frank's song" Long Long Time by Linda Ronstadt. I high recommend you listen to that beautiful song
0:29 Make sure from now on to call them "Infected" since they are not technically zombies. This was stated from the developers as well as in the game. For one to become zombie it must be dead and rise from the graveyard, while those people are actually "infected" by a disease and it can be transferred to one another
in the game, bill is seen as the person joel does NOT want to become. Bill and Franks relationship isn’t as wholesome lmao. i like this episode bc bill shows joel the person he needs to become, a polar opposite from the game but it still works.
This episode was amazing. And I've watched I don't know how many reactions and everybody were scared of Frank. And yet, at the beginning of the episode, Ellie says "Are Bill and Frank nice?" and Joel answers with "Frank is", so we should've trusted him from the start... but no one did... not even me haha
So I was thinking the same thing with him standing in the street but I did see someone who said he may have been there to keep Frank safe so the raiders wouldn’t fire toward the house.
@@ItsAPrimateeI think it may have been to show his single minded tenacity in protecting Frank. He was ready to stand in the open and take all of the raiders on to protect Frank, and to a lesser extent his property. I think he may have been taken over by anger, and it overwhelmed his reason and logic.
Based on what I saw, it looked like the stray bullets were hitting the house at first when Frank was getting his gun, so Bill lured it away from the house, and since the house across theirs only has wooden fence with gaps, which does nothing to cover, also it would provide bad angle and visibility to target the raiders (remember it was supposed to be darker because of the time and rain, camera only made it brighter for viewers) so he had to shoot them from the road.
Not many people noticed, but when Bill and Frank had their first fight, this is the fork of Bill's storyline, where if Bill decided to make compromises for Frank, his story is what we saw in the show, but if he decided to keep it strict and uncompromising, then his story would be like in the game...this is hinted by what Frank said "So help me god I will run through your tripwires" which is kind of paralleled with what he said in the letter in the game "Trying to leave this town will kill me. Still better than spending another day with you." Which us who played the game knows well the town is full of tripwires (and infected).
I enjoy watching reactors who have no idea what's going to happen. Episode 3 is the only one where that applies to everyone, gamer and non. Fun to hear the theories. I've been obsessed with series before, but this is another level. I don't know exactly why. But the whole thing is just incredibly well executed, start to finish. Every element is practically perfect. Even though I've seen these episodes multiple times, I often notice new things. Like at 14:39. The shot of the fence, but notice the vibrant, living flowers which Joel notices are dead in present day. I could go on. I've been spoiled with limited series. Now I want all tv to be like this. Instead of dragging shows out for years with diminishing quality, just give us 9 perfect episodes and then move on to a new idea. Is that so hard? 😂
5:00 So from what I can understand, the whole underground network would mainly exist in heavily populated areas, because the more infected there are, the further and faster they can spread the roots. But in deserted areas like the woods, it would be very rare to find a human, let alone an infected human, meaning the network wouldn't be able to spread very far and without any more people to infect, the infected would just die before it can even spread the roots that far. So if you were to find a straggler in the middle of the woods it would be okay to kill it because it's too far away for any other infected to feel it. Hell, it would be recommended to kill them so they don't find any friends to build the network. That being said, Ellie doesn't know that, so she was still being reckless, but fortunately she was in a safe spot to kill that infected.
This episode echoes my exact life in 2020 when we ran out of toilet paper and sanitizer. Well, not really. I never trapped a rabbit or anything. But still. :P
"It was a "Jump to Conclusions" mat. You see, it would be this mat that you would put on the floor, and it would have different conclusions written on it that you could jump to."
4:00 "you never know(if the store was picked over)if you haven't been here in years." So do you suppose the infected stopped by and restocked the store?
11:50 "man I hope this doesn't end bad" *breaks out the tissues* But no, the cordyceps infection doesn't work like zombies, if you just die you die. If the infection is in you and you haven't turned yet and you die, you're still dead and the fungus has no control. Thats the scary part, all the infected are still living people, they're not like undead or something.
They're not zombies, they're infected! If you're not infected, you're not going to turn. You should try to fully divorce mentally from the Walking Dead or any other zombie story you're thinking of and pay attention to the world building in this world.
A lot of ppl thought Bill and Frank’s outcome was too unrealistic but I didn’t think it would be. There will always be people who learn to thrive in horrible situations, they not only survive but live good lives. They had the best outcome, getting to die on your terms with a loved one is the best way to die in this kind of situation. Though it wasn’t the same in the game at all, I liked this outcome more honestly, I like that it shined a bit of happiness that could happen in the apocalypse!
So these two characters of Bill and Frank are represented in the game completely differently. If you ever do a gameplay you’ll see exactly how in which ways. However!… This episode was executed so perfectly. It gives much more meaning to their character arcs and the talent of the acting and writing shows! One of the best episodes of this show, arguably THE best to most. The writers said it themselves that they attempted to make the deaths and touching moments of the important characters we venture with, much more impactful in the show than in the game. Some differences being how they die, and other differences being the details which make the character so that their death or growth hits a lot harder. I believe they did an excellent job!
BILL AND FRANK: In the first episode, Ellie is looking at the book with musical codes: “So, who’s Bill and Frank? The radio is a smuggling code: the 60’s…” At the end of second episode, Tess: “You need to get her to Bill and Franks.” At the beginning of the third episode, Ellie: “Are Bill and Frank nice?” Joel’s response: “Frank is…” In three episodes before Frank falls into the hole, the show tells you that Frank will be part of Bill’s life for the foreseeable future. Third episode in, you should know you don’t turn when you die… Ellie asked how “do people get infected?”… food or getting bit… Musician/Lyricist, Stephen Sondheim, said one of the problem with today’s society is they don’t listen… true. Other than that, good commentary.
So, this was an analysis by the TH-camr schnee (whose channel I HIGHLY recommend), where he sort of breaks down this modern change in masculinity depicted in shows and movies using bridge traits (traits that could be masculine or may not in a certain light). Here, obviously you assume Bill to be this caricature of antiquated masculinity, with him hating the government, having a bunker, wielding guns, roughing it. But once he’s revealed to be gay, you might notice, oh well his hair is very well manicured and he likes fancy dinners and plays the piano. That has been depicted as very masculine but might not be in certain situation. It’s especially prevalent in Arcane like with Vander (hulking but caring and a pacifist) and even Silco (a masculine personality but wears makeup to conceal his scars). Anyway it’s just a neat sort of analysis schnee did that I recommend you check out bc he can analyze it much better than I did!
Not just the pancakes - his neighbor offered biscuits and Joel said he's on Atkins. And when the neighbor lady wanted to bake cookies with Joel's daughter, she said they were gonna be oatmeal raisin and that made Sarah not wanna have any. They were turning down baked/flour-based foods throughout the episode.
You probably do know Nick Offerman (Ron Swanson of Parks and Recreation). He was sent the script for this episode but just set it aside and didn't read it. However, his wife (Megan Mullaly - Karen Walker of Will and Grace) did read it. She told Nick, "Oh. honey, you're doing this." And as we saw she got her way and he'll probably get an Emmy for it.
Just an FYI and this isn't a spoiler, but the show definitely filled in the story of Bill and Frank, in the game its more of a mention in a passing moment but there was a bit more under the surface when you paid attention, but they didn't show their relationship head on though it was still heartbreaking. The series decided to play out their story in such a beautiful way.
I absolutely love this episode, I would go as far to say it’s my favorite. The acting, the proper way to represent being gay instead of it feeling forced and stiff, the shots, the music 🤌🏻
You brought up how you were confused that ellie killing the infected in the basement didn't and mightve attracted others. I think others only get attracted like last episode if those veining leyline mushroom things get touched. Ya know in the clicker building Joel hit them and they were all dried up but the dude at the building jumpscared them and when he got shot the body fell on one of those things that brought all the infected. Hope that cleared that up for ya
well as to reality, the power grid would have been gone long ago, no one to maintain it and upkeep. It would't have been powering the property 20 years later, much less 4 years later. Same with gasoline. Gasoline doesn't last that long and Bill doesn't have a refinery nearby. He would have had to adjust the truck to run on something else, you couldn't just siphon gasoline out of tanks it would have all broken down by then. They quickly would have went back to candles and fireplaces, not still running stuff via electricity. And yes most viewers commented on the "survivalist" just standing in the middle of the street shooting, its laughable. He would have had defensive positions enforced, probably on the top floor of the house for shooting, and would have had a much smaller perimeter around the house to upkeep instead of the whole town. No way would he have the time or materials to keep the fence/traps up in that huge area.
this is my favourite episode of the entire show. The love between frank and bill is real, not just some token gay romance that hollywood tends to throw into shows to reach their representation quotas. Fucking heartwrenching real pure love and that hasn't been done a lot before when it comes to LGBTQ people in media.
From my reading, the actor who played Frank is gay himself. They actually wanted both actors to be gay, but the one who had been cast as Bill had to step away at the last minute. Nick Offerman was hired to fill in, and honestly is acting in this is incredible. Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett are acting powerhouses. They make you feel every moment of joy and anger and sorrow.
So this is the Episode that strays the furthest from the Game. I won't go into detail, but in the Game, Bill does meet Joel and Ellie current time. And while this was a very sweet love story, it ... was kind of filler and I personally would've preferred if the show used the games route (unpopular opinion, I know! Please don't fry me!). Especially since Ellie and Bill have some very funny back and forth dialogue and Joel has to keep them from stabbing eachother, which we sadly never get to see in the show.
This episode got a lot of hate from a certain segment of watchers, worst episode ever they claimed… they’re angry now that this one episode got multiple Emmy nominations.
I have played The Last Of Us Part 1 at least a dozen times, & I can say that this show is the best videogame adaptation ever! It does what any good adaptation should do; be mostly loyal to the original source material, but change just enough so there's something new yet still enjoyable to watch.
Great videos. It gives me so much hope that you enjoyed this episode and its big gay love story. Looking forward to reliving the rest of the show with you. It just gets more intense from here.
Bill was in the middle of the street to draw the gunfire away from the house and away from Frank. Frank’s safety always came first. They were together like sixteen years. And oh my goodness you talk so much, I feel like it takes you out of the emotion of the show talking so much. I liked your reaction though.
Damn man, you talk way too long and edit out too much of the good scenes and dialogue, just to ramble on. No, bill & Frank wouldn’t have turned, as it was already made clear you have to eat infected food or be bit and clearly they were not.

Primate sat down and said TODAY IM GOING TO GUESS EVERYTHING WRONG ABOUT THIS EP
Thought tess and Joel were gonna slay them 😭
Tess at the end of episode 2 (you might have missed her saying) telling Joe to take Ellie to Bill and Frank to continue mission to fireflies
Bro you were so paranoid this episode, you didn't know who to trust 😂 had me dying.
THIS IS NOT A "ZOMBIE" APOCALYPSE..
Bill and Frank's story teaches us that there's more to life (in the apocalypse) than just making it to the next day
So I was thinking the same thing with him standing in the street but I did see someone who said he may have been there to keep Frank safe so the raiders wouldn’t fire toward the house.
But there’s other places he could’ve ducked behind I feel like 😅
@@ItsAPrimateeI think it may have been to show his single minded tenacity in protecting Frank.
If you think about it, bill and Frank won the apocalypse. No one was having a better life then theirs and they went out on their own terms
no she knew its just having tampons and pads are scarce in the apocalypse, probably a messy time
I know this man didn’t say a teenage girl doesn’t know what a tampon is 💀
HAHAHA
Well, guess I'm ready to cry again.
This episode is my favorite of the entire first season, Primate! 💗 #ItsAPrimate #PeterHoar #TheLastOfUs #TLOU #TheLastOfUsHBO
These reactions have been goated- doing one of my favorite tv shows in a while and horror movies? YES SIR
4:00 "you never know(if the store was picked over)if you haven't been here in years." So do you suppose the infected stopped by and restocked the store?
11:50 "man I hope this doesn't end bad"
*breaks out the tissues*
But no, the cordyceps infection doesn't work like zombies, if you just die you die.
The ratings for this show shot through the roof because of this episode
BILL AND FRANK:
In the first episode, Ellie is looking at the book with musical codes:
“So, who’s Bill and Frank? The radio is a smuggling code: the 60’s…”
At the end of second episode, Tess: “You need to get her to Bill and Franks.”
At the beginning of the third episode, Ellie: “Are Bill and Frank nice?”
Joel’s response: “Frank is…”
In three episodes before Frank falls into the hole, the show tells you that Frank will be part of Bill’s life for the foreseeable future.
Third episode in, you should know you don’t turn when you die… Ellie asked how “do people get infected?”… food or getting bit…
Musician/Lyricist, Stephen Sondheim, said one of the problem with today’s society is they don’t listen… true.
8:19....yes you do know this actor...
The man, the myth, the legend....Duke Silver! (aka) Ron Swanson, (aka) Nick Offerman!
Perfect guy for this role!
5:44 notice he didn’t eat the pancakes that his daughter wanted him to eat , just like u said the little things in this show are amazing
Last episode - Tess: Take her to Bill and Frank.
Never clicked on a video so fast…. Been waiting all week for this episode reaction
W
so in the game joel went to bills house and there were indication of frank being his partner but we dont get to know these 2 characters
I feel like sarah would still be alive if they didn’t announce that her ankle was hurt😭 maybe they thought she was bit😩
Bill had it under control but frank distracted him
As far as i liked first 3 episodes, next two (kinda 2 - episode small arc) were the best for me.
Bill is played by the guy from Parks and Rec. Nick Offerman
To turn into a "zombie" in this show - you either have yo eat the tainted food or you have to be bitten.
Or scratched hard enough for the infection to enter your bloodstream
i feel like i could manage alone, just leave me with my devices and im good
Most reactors I've seen say, in the shooting scene, that Frank distracted Bill. I'm more on your side, Bill should have taken cover.
My favorite episode of the show.
This is on my list of top ten episodes of TV ever.
In TWD, everyone is infected. In this universe only the zombies are
I remember everyone hating this episode strictly because they’re gay lol
Your paranoia was next level this episode lol
well as to reality, the power grid would have been gone long ago, no one to maintain it and upkeep.
@@wackyvorlon that's dope af
17:22 Looks just like Robert Baratheon from GoT....
This is not the Bill and Frank story in the game. ANd when Joel and Ellie leave him Bil is still alive.
Such a beautiful episode
INSANE EPISODE
14:27 bro don't trust no one 😅
These Infected aren’t technically dead.
Loving the reactions man 🎉
Thanks!
Damn. we don't get a flashback.......oh, yeah we do.
Almost 100k🎉
This episode got a lot of hate from a certain segment of watchers, worst episode ever they claimed… they’re angry now that this one episode got multiple Emmy nominations.
so im pretty sure frank had ALS or MS
I have played The Last Of Us Part 1 at least a dozen times, & I can say that this show is the best videogame adaptation ever! It does what any good adaptation should do; be mostly loyal to the original source material, but change just enough so there's something new yet still enjoyable to watch. For example, about 80% of what we see in the 1st 3 episodes is from the 1st few levels of the game, but the remaining 20% is things like expanded backstory & more development for certain characters we didn't originally get. Here's hoping Season 2 is as good & faithful when they adapt Part 2.
they are gonna hate season 2 lol...the gameplay is better but you cant play a tv show
Yo love the reactions primate, keep up the good work man!
Thanks for the support man!
WOW perfect fucking timing I just finished watching spider man atsv and as soon as I turned on youtube you upload.

Thanks for everything primate 🙏

Quick note: this episode is titled ‘Long, long time’😊
😅
It's a reference to " Bill and Frank's song" Long,Long Time
Brah you should watch twisted metal good show to binge watch
Awesome episode. Can't wait to watch!!
They arent zombiesssss.
Great videos. It gives me so much hope that you enjoyed this episode and its big gay love story. Looking forward to reliving the rest of the show with you. It just gets more intense from here.
I cant believe hbo had 2 episodes named ‘’when you’re lost in the darkness’’ so much for creativety
He put the wrong episode title…
@@SandraMorris51 yeah i know i was being satire
@@ikoandreas5085 You were being satire??? That's pretty impressive. This is me being sarcasm
we here for it !!!!!
Bill was in the middle of the street to draw the gunfire away from the house and away from Frank. Frank’s safety always came first. They were together like sixteen years. And oh my goodness you talk so much, I feel like it takes you out of the emotion of the show talking so much. I liked your reaction though.
So gooD
Cripes. sometimes. you really don't know when to stop yapping, do you?
It's a reaction, if you wanna watch without 'yapping' go watch it on your own.
They took away Bill and Ellie meeting. I wasn't happy with how different they made this ep compared to the game

Gang
Damn man, you talk way too long and edit out too much of the good scenes and dialogue, just to ramble on. No, bill & Frank wouldn’t have turned, as it was already made clear you have to eat infected food or be bit and clearly they were not.
