NBA on NBC opening never disappoint. Lovin' those days. I wish NBC will bid another TV coverage run for NBA and play this iconic opening sound once more
Shaq was really athletic back when he played for Orlando Magic. Penny Hardaway had so much skill, it’s such a shame he got injured. We never got to see his peak! 👍🏽
Shaq had moves downlow and was super athletic and quick he was an absolute monster and Penny was a smooth operator explosive like Mj and could pass like Magic what a phenomenal duo.
That may be part of it, but Orlando was surprisingly mediocre on the road that year going 18-23, then finishing their last two playoff series without a road win memorably being swept by the more experienced Rockets in the Finals.
idk about that. the pacers ran basically 10 deep while the magic had a great starting lineup but were considered very thin on the bench. A Davis, Byron Scott, mitchell, workman, ferrell, etc are better than the likes of an ancient tree rollins, bowie, royal, shaw and jeff turner. What made the series close was the lack of discipline and ability to finish off an opponent when up. Magic made a bunch of sloppy mistakes indicative of a young team which is why they struggled to finish the Pacers and why they had issues with the Bulls before that and their other playoff matchups during the Shaq era. Horace Grant was brought in to sure that up but he did a pretty poor job all things considered.
@@scottb3034 The Magic could've easily been up 3-1 going into this game. As far as Grant goes he did do a great job overall considering he helped get them out the East, the problem they faced in the finals was the Rockets having the ability to stretch out the defense from everywhere while the Magic were a bit more limited in their offense w/Shaq always clogging the lane. Also the last 10 seconds of regulation in G1 didn't help either.
@@ChrisM07 Yeah, again because they were young, lacked discipline and the instinct to finish an opponent when they are down. Grant's ability is what allowed that more than the leadership he was intended to provide. He didn't lead them as they expected to by instilling discipline, poise and that killing instinct. The Magic had many of the same issues after he arrived as they did before he arrived. I wouldn't say the Magic were more limited they were almost exactly a mirror match for the rockets. A strong interior presence that was their main weapon and could draw in defenses to kick out to a score of sharpshooters on the perimeter. If anything the Magic had more versatility since Hardaway at that point was a more dynamic scorer than even clyde who was beginning to age and Horace had more of a scoring arsenal than any 4 the Rockets threw out there, even Horry who was not good on the glass or inside. And yes the last 10 seconds really hurt the magic but that underscores the issues I mentioned of little poise, not being able to finish off an opponent and really the last 10 seconds were just the after taste of a meltdown that started in the 3rd quarter that allowed the rockets to even be there at the end.
@@scottb3034 The difference w/ and w/o Grant was their record, the following year they had a significantly worse record w/o him compared to the games Shaq missed so I'd say he did provide some leadership. Considering the Magic had no postseason success at all prior to 95 Grant did as well as he possibly could've. He was only there for 2 seasons before Shaq left so they didn't really get a chance to grow more moving forward. The big run the Rockets had in the 3rd quarter was because their defense picked up after a slow 1st half, remember the Magic had 1 more turnover overall compared to the Bulls series the following year (64 to 63). Horry was pretty good at boxing out and rebounding, plus he was good interior defender w/his shot blocking so he had some capabilities to play that position which showed throughout the series. Grant also wasn't much of a low post player so Horry didn't have to worry about foul trouble, it was a good matchup overall for him. Horry obviously had longer range compared to Grant while Shaq had practically no outside range, he was only an offensive threat out of the low post off putbacks and lobs the Rockets had better floor spacing in their offense. Plus he moved a bit slower in the post which I mentioned to you in another vid a while back. I know Penny had a matchup advantage at PG however Rudy had the answer for that by not having Smith or Cassell guard him in the 4th quarter. Penny's GmSc was 20.5 which was nearly identical to Drexler's (20.1) so neither necessarily had a better series than the other.
1995 Magic/Pacers and 1998 Bulls/Pacers were nearly identical except for having game 5 and 7 reversed, 1995 had a close game 5 with a blowout in game 7 while 1998 had a blowout in game 5 with a close game 7.
Magic we’re toying with Pacers. They almost blew a 15 point lead. At no point, at the start of the series, did I think the Pacers would beat the Magic. Pacers needed Reggie’s 6 points in 18 seconds to beat the Knicks. Knicks should have been here
Orlando was my 1st favorite team when I started following the NBA in the mid 90's. Penny Hardaway was my favorite even tho Shaq was the MVP of the team. They were on a special run (the only other team in the 90's outside of the Pistons to eliminate MJ in a playoff series. And yes WE ALL know he was just returning from baseball 🙄)...up until the finals when Nick Anderson went to the FT line late in game 1, with a chance to ice the game 😩
It’s crazy watching gbthese games as a 42 yo man now just thinking that no one knew that social media and streaming platforms were going to be a thing lol.
I was living in Orlando in 95 when this game went down I seen Reggie Miller 31 and Derek mckey 9 walking to practice for this game fire them was the days 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥 🔥
Watching these games back again man Reggie was underutilized on that team. I remember thinking as a kid he should shoot more but now I’m seeing they didn’t even run a lot for him. Today he would be scoring 27-30 a game
He is too unselfish and also weirdly at times doesn't demand the ball too much during those games when he struggles from the field. As a lifelong Pacers fan, it is sad to say that there were many other times Miller choked.
marv albert's retired and his voice is no longer the same as well. if ABC didn't death grip the rights for 20 years and TNT hold it for 35 years itself marv could have been back.
My middle school days. As an Orlando fan and Penny my favorite player 🔥🔥🔥
Luv these Classic NBA Games from the 90’s 🏀

well, here we go. mark 15 months from now.
I will never, for as long as I live, get tired of that NBA on NBC intro music.Back then, you you had to watch.
Well you have to listen to it again in the future in 2025!
The first 5 games of this series were decided by a combined 17 points
bring back the NBA on NBC
I agree but you know it’s not going to be the same as the 90s
Bring back the NBA......
@@paulhonore1885Exactly 💯 it's just not going to feel the same as back in the 90's.

Rik smith up and under was crazy.

I’m convinced Larry Brown was the reason this series was so close. Orlando had a big talent advantage and Indiana had a big coaching advantage.
