This has to be one of the most beautiful and exciting places I have visited. Though, if you want long stretches of sandy beaches, this is not the place for you. Go to Coco's (Keeling) Islands. Next stop. Christmas Island is like a wedding cake rising out of the deep ocean. Each layer of th cage is a completely different ecological, geographical niche. There are beautiful beaches. Just spread around the island to hike to. There are no dangerous creatures, animal or human, on Christmas Island. The huge variety of life is exciting. My favorite? The very large Robber crabs that are everywhere. Beautiful, almost stately at times. Quietly subtle at others. All different colors. They do have a naughty tendency. Anything they cannot immediately taste, they take off with. Hence, Robber crabs. They are not fast or mean. Just dedicated to moving things to investigate. You can bush walk for days without retracing a step. Local police have emergency beacons to carry with you, just in case you get turned around bush walking. There are interesting and poignant historical and religious sites all around the island. The multiethnic population emebellishes your entire time there. Christmas Island is home to a wide variety of wildlife. Centering primarily around birds and crabs, but the Christmas Island Flying Foxes are spectacular as well. I was on Christmas Island for several months, Feb 2020 through May 2020. I saw something new every single day I was there. Just as the pandemic changed our world. I will be back, as soon as travel restrictions are stabilized or lifted. The island waters are well know for spectacular snorkling and diving, but I ran out of time. Red crab migration and spawning happens after the first good rains in Oct-Nov-Dec-Jan, varies by year, is closely followed by whale shark migration to Christmas Island waters. Something has to munch up on all those baby crabs! If you have an eye to mostly unspoiled beauty in a place where the birds watch you, then you will love Christmas Island.
