Unfortunately Dennis Capiga is no longer with Hammond USA. RIP Harvey Olsen, you are sorely missed.

Every Hammond enthusiast should know about the original tonewheel organ - the Telharmonium, invented by Thaddeus Cahill in 1896. The difference is that the tonewheels were actually individual AC generators, because there was no amplifier. The second version weigher 200 tons, No recordings exist. The last one was scrapped in 1962.

The addition of harmonics (draw bars) to create different timbres is not mysterious. It is fundamental to the physics of sound.

Leo Fender was also a non-musician.

That panel of experts must have either been deaf or were being paid a lot of money. Hammonds, great instruments though they are, sound nothing like pipe organs.

The question is who could have offered more money: L. Hammond, who was able to keep his company afloat with the first organ models in the mid-1930ies, or several established instrument manufacturers who initiated this roundabout. I would imagine that the sounds that were guessed wrong tended to be flute-like, because a Hammond is good at mimicking such sounds. With a brighter sound, the differences would be too obvious.
