Paul, great video for beginners! But this video should come with a warning about razor acquisition disorder, brush acquisition disorder, soap acquisition disorder, lather bowl acquisition disorder, etc... also, there is no cure.
*Don’t let him fool you* 😅, he’s just being modest he is an expert at traditional WetShaving!!! Just like the rest of us that have been doing it for years! We’ve been through so many different Products over the years like brushes, Soaps, safety razors, straight razors, aftershaves, balms, preshaves, DE Blades etc….that we can easily give a beginner the right tips and tricks and point them in the right direction 👉🏻 to get started. Because God knows we all got a lot of our past experiences to share with newbies! Only thing is certain😁👆🏻 things are subjective like Razor-blades and you’ll here the term “ your mileage may vary”. Meaning this certain safety razor is aggressive for me but you might find it very comfortable for a little harsh, same concept with razor blades or a certain scent of a shave soap 👃🏻 🤨 But most of the time I would listen to what people say 👂🏻. . . because IF lot of people in the community say a Razor is agressive it most likely IS . . .
Hi Paul, For me you are an expert ! I don't know when you will find out that you are one.... I can't thank you enough for you're time and the great quality of you're video's. Keep going with the vids and maybe in 20 or 30 years you will realised you are.... An EXPERT !
yes incredible , the edwin jagger de 89 I bought on the net a year ago for only 30 dollar very cheap is excellent quality and a week ago I bought via ebay this palmolive classic shave cream from Germany , suposing scentis the same as the stick , you are saying that you are no expert , oh and in our opinion ( we de shavers ) believe that you are one of the most important experts on the internet, saludos desde Mexico ,
Paul💈💈 Nicely done. Newbies everywhere are thanking you. Good products presented for first timers or seasoned shavers alike. I can see a more in depth version of this video sometime in the future. Yet once again Mrs H stuns with a beautiful display for our viewing pleasure, thanks. SOTD" PAA Cube, Mr Fine "Santal Absolute" soap/splash, Semogue "Owners Club" two band badger brush, RazoRock "Game Changer" .84 razor w/Perma Sharp blade, alum, witch hazel and AV 5in1 balm to finish...Glorious. A big Turkey dinner with all the trimmings for me tomorrow, traveling to my son's for the holiday. Have a fantastic rest of your week, see you this weekend. Enjoy!
Bravissimo Paul!! Excellent, just outstanding in every regard. I will note this shave for my grandson's reference in a year or so when he MAY decide to take the plunge as opposed to using the cartridge razor or electric. When I first began wet shaving in 2013, one of the first razors I purchased was the Edwin Jagger DE89 (high gloss chrome like you purchased later). You are quite correct in your comments about this razor AND it is important for both Edwin Jagger and you to know that I purchased it on your recommendation. As I like to say, "the truth is always easy" and as such, it is very easy to say that this razor is terrific. Lastly, another of my favorite PaulhFilms videos (for an impeccable shave experience) is one just a few years back when you used Musgo Real Orange Amber Shaving Cream in a tube. As always, my compliments to Mrs. H! I love the reference to your dad at the end of each shave. Charles K.
Started using shave oil two weeks ago. After 2 years of using a DE razor again my neck never would toughen up. Used a DE when I started shaving in the 70's, then a Schick injector for a long time. Lost it traveling somewhere and used single blade disposables for years. Nothing but BBS shaves and no irritation on my neck since using the shave oil.
Nice video, Paul! I've been a Subscriber for awhile and DE wet shaver for about two years. I wasn't skipping this video! Those are all great suggestions and very similar to how I started. You put it all in one place, succinctly, so it reduces the confusion a new wet shaver will have to experience. I will never go back to cartridges! It's great you're doing this to benefit the wet shaving community to educate and encourage converts. I started using shave oil 10+ years ago and it made the conversion to WS easier. The blade samplers and alum block are other extremely important suggestions, as you clearly point out. Thanks again, and the goatee does suit you...maybe grow it back after shaving it off with an R41 or other aggressive OC after Movember? Hint, hint.😉
This was an excellent how-to video for new DE wet shavers. Lots of great advice...especially the light touch and let the razor do the work. My only add-on would be which safety razor to get. But that's very subjective. My suggestion would be the Rockwell 6C because it offers 6 choices of aggression/efficiency. I wish I had started with one of those instead of a mid aggression razor. But if the beginner heeds your light touch advice, then it may not be that important. Also, only doing two passes and NOT trying to achieve that BBS result will help to avoid nicks and irritation. Focussing on the shave and never rushing will also give the new wet shaver a satisfying and comfortable shave. Thanks for sharing. And I would be remiss if I didn't thank Mrs. H for that beautiful flower display. Take care. PS: it's a good thing you didn't warn them about the rabbit hole 😉
Morning Paul. Great advice. Everyone I talk with say that they are afraid of cutting themselves. I believe that the best advice is take your time. When I 1st started shaving I had a choice of straight razor or DE razor shaving with aerosol soap. Given a hand me down Gillette Slim. Told to set it one 1 and be careful. That was 60 years ago.
My starting kit was Timor butterfly razor, which I bought after I'd tried plastic dorco razor, Wilkinson Sword boar brush, Nivea sensitive cream and mennen skin bracer. Timor kicked the bucket in a year and I bought Muhle 89.
Hi Paul- Great shave; thank you! Very nice intro video to wet shaving for the beginner. Excellent selection of products for someone to purchase to try for their first DE shave. Lovely roses from Mrs H; thank you, as always! Have a great rest of the week. Be safe and be well. See you on Sunday for the weekend shave. All the best, Paul!
Paul the Wet shaving Ambassador, well done pal! I'm the same way I hated saving, did only shave when the itch was to much. Have a great day and stay safe and healthy. Over here new Covid cases going through the roof. 💈🪒
Superb video Paul. I would think that it will help many people make the decision to try this way of shaving. And allow time and patience for the enjoyment to come. At this rate, we're going to run out of rabbit holes for everyone. 🏴👍
Great video Paul. Really gets across well that DE shaving does not have to be expensive. If you want nice DE shaving products the initial outlay is pricey but long term is very very cheap and I think people forget that :)
Good video Paul. Beard mapping is essential for someone just starting out. Haven't used a cartridge razor in years and I even use a straight razor from time to time. A Merkur or Edwin Jagger are two great "beginner" razors and I agree with you that a novice should buy a sample pack of blades. I get some from Russia, UK, India, Israel, etc. as well as the US. I use a blade for two shaves and then replace since they're so inexpensive compared to cartridges. I do the three pass method and that works for me because I know I'll get that BBS. My razor collection is taking up quite a bit of real estate in my shave den as are my brushes. I prefer synthetic over badger, super badger or boar but that's a personal preference. Finish off with an alum block to find the hot spots and stop any "weepers"; then it's on to witch hazel. I also like to use a subtle after shave splash where the scent only lasts an hour or so, unlike a cologne. Lastly, I use a balm to hydrate my freshly shaved mug. Experimentation is the key to enjoying wet shaving and it can be quite addictive (in a good way). Cheers from the U.S. Paul!
Great shave 💈 Yes important to mention you will suffer GBH of the bank account due to this addiction!!! Some lovely products out there. Love that display Mrs H 💐 Hope you have a great rest of the week 💈💐💈
MrsH does it again with a lovely floral display. Great advise and good gear suggestions for startup DE shavers. Simplicity and patience are important factors when starting Traditional DE wet shaving, it took me a long time to get my techniques working well enough to get consistent smooth shaves, I suggest don't give up it takes a while to adapt the skin and detrain cart muscle memories.
My starting set up was Gillette 7'o clock plastic razor and a locally produced shaving cream, Old Spice (P&G) aftershave and alum block, and I still tend to go back to this set up. Also, Ming Shi and Arko is a terrific entry combo that saves a lot of bucks and still delivers fabulous shaves.
If the new wetshaver is tight on cash they can get a low cost TTO on the Italian Barber site along with a brush and cream this morning it will be the Parker 87R And Arko puck with a Parker razor blade no preshave face has been coming out tender
Hey Paul what a great video. My god son wants to try wet shaving so this year I'm getting him his own starter kit for wet shaving and know I can send him this video to help him out.
Good morning Paul loved your videos it was very helpful tell Mrs H thanks 😊 for the beautiful flowers 🌺 Have a nice Thanksgiving stay safe see you Sunday god bless
Synthetic fiber shaving brush isn’t like hog bristle or badger, just like wife’s or sister’s makeup brush - not only for vegans, for everybody. Palmolive shaving cream is equivalent to Nivea cream, however the Nivea shaving cream isn’t readily available in all countries. Weishi razor can be had as a rebranded product. DE blades work differently on each guy’s face. Even the barber can shave himself by straight razor. Witch hazel has hemostatic effect same as alum block.
nice beginners guide Paul ;) great video and shave as always fun stuff to, stay safe, cheers....Peter ps you forgot to speak about the 30 Degree angle and usage of both sides of the razor blade, lol also no rubbing the towel, pad yourself dry lol
Hey Paul! Hope all is well man! 🤙🏻 I pulled out my R-41 for the first time today in quite some time. I come to the realization the longer I’ve been WetShaving that the Muhle R-41 is good for about one or two passes but if you’re doing the full 3 , your most likely going to get a Nick, weeper, or cut going for that BBS, but if you just want to get the bulk down and get out the door it’s good for that 💈😁✌🏻💈 ~Mike 🌹
It might be me but I find explaing videos addictive, so this one was top notch for me. P.S. I just ordered my 2nd safety razor a parker 96R, would you give it a go Paul if you can any time soon to give it your thoughts?? (or a razor with the same head obviously)
I love Palmolive shave cream!!! It's green in colour, come in a green tube and smells green. Amazing sickness in a very good price, I bought from Amazon 3 tubes for 6 quid, 2 pounds a tube!!! I hope they never stop making it as they did with the stick. I managed to buy one for 8 quid!!! What a rip off 😡😡😡
good video mate . and under 30 min . mine went to 45 🤣🤣🤣🤣 was difficult to get a short video with trying to pack so much in . plus talking and shaving is not so easy for me 🤪🤪🤪

Great Shave Paul,
Exactly what I was hoping for, open, honest, enjoyable! Just what we want, great advice and products.
Very nice shave sir. It’s always good to go back to the basics of have a simple shave.
