I've been delaying gratification for a LONG time waiting to watch this video on THIS specific day, April 17, 2024, the 160th anniversary of the commissioning of the CSS Albemarle into the C.S. Navy on April 17, 1864. I have to commend you on this excellent video. I know it has been a while since I've communicated, and I know you have been inundated with requests to create videos on this ship or that ship, but I'd just like to lend my support to those that have requested a video on the CSS Tennessee and her role in the Battle of Mobile Bay. Thanks for all the work you are doing!
Fascinating. A brave ship. How ingenious that though she only had two guns, each had three gun ports. So instead of a revolving turret, the Albemarle had a revolving gun platform, that could point the weapon forward, left or right. When both the fore and aft guns pointed left, eg, it would be a broadside.
I am a resident of Plymouth. The story is that in the battle of Albemarle sound the stack on the ram was so full of holes that it would not draw. The rebs put a side of bacon in the boiler and the heat generated by the grease gave the ship enough power to get back up river to Plymouth.
Cushing's brother, Alonzo, was an even MORE famous hero of the Civil War. He died commanding his artillery against Pickett's Charge at Gettysburg and received the Medal of Honor from President Obama over 130 years after his death. A 2nd brother also died a hero leading his men away from an Apache ambush in America's Southwest.
i really like the way you made this video, it has the perfect music for it and the Albemarle is such a good ship to review, this needs more views, ive rewatched it like 50 times now.
@@Ironchad1 A movie about the Albemarle would be a dream come true, but there is one ironclad film about the CSS Virginia and USS monitor, it's on TH-cam and i believe it's just called "ironclads", i highly recommend
Most Civil War history revolves around land battles, but the TRUE & DECISIVE war took place on the water ! The US Navy's ability to successfully blockade the South eventually choked off vital supplies from Europe. Had the South been able to cripple the US Navy early in the war, a totally different outcome could have evolved.
For all of the genius and ingenuity of the south, for all of the courage and skill of the Confederate Sailors, the Southern Ironclads were no match for Yankee Monitors.
Thanks for the suggestion! The CSS Texas is a vessel i have contemplated making in the past, but my next confederate ship will be the CSS Alabama (not due for a long time unfortunately). What kind of model are you making?
@@belugasub7852 Oooooo, dang auto correct, I am making 3 actually, a computer model, a scale model, and a full scale replica! We want it to be the main attraction at the Civil War Ironclad Museum! 😁👍👍🇺🇸
@@belugasub7852 NO, actually a full size WORKING replica, that guests can crew out into the Gulf of Mexico, and "fire the guns"! ... Just need a couple more MILLION dollars and we begin the build! 😁😱🤪🤣👍👍🇺🇸 Wait, did I forget to say we are gonna build an RC model too! So that would be four! 🤣👍👍🇺🇸
It's called "Swamp Fox" and is about Confederate General M.J. Thompson. There are at least a couple of videos here on You tube featuring the entire song. You DO have to specifically look up the song about Gen. Thompson though, as there is another song by the same title about Revolutionary War general Francis Marion who also had the nickname "Swamp Fox".
Riverine combat is a fascinating concept that's often overlooked
Absolutely Tyler, there are some truly incredible battles that took place on rivers.

Excellent job. Anyone wanting to read in depth check out "The Confederate Ironclads" by Maurice Melton, p. 183-- has a chapter on the Albemarle.

Fun story! Thanks for sharing
Whatever it takes!! Sounds about right!!
Very cool telling of a helluva story. Do Tennessee please please
Your animations are great! Very interesting subject matter also. You should make more videos. Let's get this guy more subscribers!

William Cushing was a Navy Seal before there were Navy Seals. His exploits during the Civil War are unbelievable. He was quite the sailor!
Lemme guess, that hero brother did NOT get a MoH from Obama lol
Awesome video and well done. Thank you for making these

Yeah biggest mistake the South made was in their failure (for whatever reasons) to unblockade themselves.
Brilliant work! Well done, as always!
Thank you glad you liked it.
