Rick Riordan is probably one of the best authors out there when it comes to LGBTQIAP+ representation, especially in the Trials of Apollo series (bi main character, gay couple, lesbian couple, asexual characters) and the Magnus Chase series (possibly Pan main character, trans/genderfluid main character). Definitely read his books if you want representation in fantasy
YESSSSS THE MAGNUS CHASE SERIES ARE MY FOREVER FAVORITE AND THEY TAUGHT ME SO MUCH ABOUT RESPECT AND ITS BEST! Pjo and HoO and ToA are awesome too! I loved Nico di angelo, if you haven’t read any of his books yet, you are missing out. Rick Riordan is a gift from the gods.
"Bisexual people are valid no matter what the gender of the person they are with." YAAASSSS THANK YOU SO MUCH EMMA I started tearing up when you said that because it's so important! Especially being bi and married to a man I kinda get shoved into a box. I love you so much for that statement. I really need to read Queens of Geek which I am super excited about. And I can't wait to read Of Fire and Stars too! Thank you for making this video. 💗💜💙
I am also bi, married to a man, and a lot of people think I stand for Pride things just for attention, when I just happened to have fallen in love with a fan. I felt so validated when Emma said that! I wish more people would acknowledge bi people, even in the LGBTQ+ community.
I really love how you didn't just review/recommend books but you did extra "research" and asked People who were LQBTQIAP+ to actually put their thoughts on it. 😊💕
And The Wild Bean Appears Don't listen to them, they're being an ass. It's just an abbreviation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, plus other orientations. 😊
And The Wild Bean Appears Ohhhh you did some investigating on tumblr did you? Cus that's a total legitimate source for your research. Some people on there make up stupid shit on purpose to make the community look bad or are just actually plain dumb and think they can make an orientation out of anything, and naive people like you eat that shit up and use it to be ignorant turds. Some people feel comfortable being labeled, and who are we to tell them anything for it? No one is forcing you to label yourself so let them do what feels comfortable for them. And I'd also like to put out there that no one died and made you head of the lgbt community for you to decide who does and doesn't belong in it.
I don't have too too much knowledge on the accuracy but I do have recs that fall under LGBT rep: Carry On by Rainbow Rowell that features both a bisexual and gay character Our own private universe by Robin Tally which features a black bisexual character The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (and also one of my favorite books of the year) Aristotle and Dante Discover the secrets of the universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
Another LGBTQ+ book (it's actually a trilogy) is Bad half. In the first book the main character is in love with a girl but in the 2nd and 3rd book he discovers his sexuality and falls in love with his best friend. I loved that book / trilogy!
@@anduril2132 that’s not true babe, if you identify as asexual that’s completely valid, these people are just ignorant & we need to either educate them or ✨ignore✨ them because if they ain’t trying to learn then they aren’t worth our time.
Oh there's a book called "I'll give you the sun" and it's an amazing book. Honestly it'll have you crying, story is about twins and we get two different perspectives from different times. We follow the sister when she and her brother are already in high school and then the brother when they're like middle school. The brother, Noah, is gay and it kinda is a big part of his story but it doesn't solely focus on his sexuality but also mental illness.
Gabrielle Mejia ahh!! I was trying to find this comment. I read the book a couple months ago and I loved it!! it was funny how I hated noah in judes perspective and I hated jude in noahs perspective. I absolutely adored the book and the ending was so good!! but dear god I really enjoyed it (:
CHANDLER ROTHERY ahaha ikr!!! And yeah that's true!! I hattttedddd Jude from Noah's pov and omg yesss the ending! Agh all the feels that book gave me!! And same it's one of my favorite books it's just so good! 😁
Ive read that book! I was a emotional wreck during the process. I loved Noah and Jude's characters, cuz they have thoughts that people can relate too. And yes I love and hated them😂😂 but Noah's character I loved since he was an artist which I am and AH I JUST LOVED IT ALSO JUDE, HER THOUGHTS ARE JUST RELATABLE!!
Emma is so awesome when she does things like this, no one In Book Tube ever does special videos of mental health or sex or LGBTQ+ content and so I love her for bring original and awesome!
I've just spent about an hour watching homophobic videos (from my country) and replying to homophobic comments (I don't know why I'm doing this to myself ) But this video popped up in my recommendations and I'm now really enjoying myself watching my dearest Emma talk about LGBT books. She is such a precious snowflake ❄❄
When u mentioned Adam Silvera I actually screamed into my pillow because THIS MAN DOES NOT GET ENOUGH MENTION and I am soooo happy u did I automatically subscribed liked and saved in my emotional outburst.
Thank you so much for including a few books with ace/aro representation! It's not very easy to find those books. Also, "The Song of Achilles" by Madeleine Miller (I think?) is a retelling of the Achilles legend, featuring a gay couple as protagonists. I really enjoyed it and can definitely recommend it!
I absolutely loved this. My sister is a Lesbian and my friend is Pan! this video made me so happy because your so supportive of every different sexuality even ones that weren't in the original Lgbt+
If anyone has happened to stumble across this video now, I really REALLY recommend Call Me by Your Name. It’s a beautiful romance story. I loved it, and the movie has started to come out in cinemas! I still love this vid Emma💕🏳️🌈
Y Tho thank you!!! I recently read Call me By Your Name and I can not get over how insanely beautiful and heart breaking it is. As soon as I was finished I started rereading it and noticing just how brilliant Acimans writing is. Honestly my favorite book out of every single book ive read. The setting is a dream, the characters are so intricate and well thought out and the story as a whole is incredible nostalgic and, for the Lack of a better word, cathartic. I can not recommend this book enough!
Hi ... check this one too As you go along the way life’s happenings teach you a lot of lessons ... Poppy Wyatt learnt that you should never enter a marriage feeling insignificant or small in any manner ... here’s the Book Review !! Like. Subscribe. Share th-cam.com/video/i3qDEZHMa3s/w-d-xo.html
the foxhole court is the only book i've read with an explicitly demi main character plus it's self published and has some of the most interesting morally grey characters i've ever read about (there's a lot of trigger warnings though so if anyone's interested they might want to look those up)
also how triggering do you think "not otherwise specefied" would be for someone in recovery from an eating disorder? your makeup is flawless by the way 😀
i've really been interested in TFC, i may need to check it out! i cant speak for all those in recovery for EDs, but i felt NOS was the least triggering of all the books about EDs that I've read. The main focus of the story isn't her disordered eating habits, but it's about handling life while in recovery. Personally, it was more relateable to where I am now in my recovery as opposed to romanticizing the parts of my disorder in the past & triggering me. That's just my personal experience though!
A Gentleman's guide to Vice and Virtue is a great book with a bisexual male protagonist(Monty), who is taken on a final adventure across 18th century Europe with his biracial best friend (who he has a cruch on) and his sister, before he has to help take over his father's estate. It tackles homophobia, sexism, abuse, and racism all in one so BEAUTIFULLY!
I have to admit, I began the book but to me it read like bad,y written fanfiction... I didn't get very far because I just personally didn't like the writing style, but if its wort pusihng through I may retrty...
another one of my recommendations is Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell. it has a m/m couple (one gay, one isn’t confirmed but most likely bi or pan) and a f/m friendship (which we all need) also, i’ve only read two of the books on this list (SVTHSA and IIWYG) so thanks!
Your top is stunning!!! I still can't believe I haven't read Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda. Have History is All You Left me on my shelf - super excited to get to it although his other one sounds even better!!!
Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo as well. I shipped Wylan and Jesper in Six of Crows too, but I wasn’t sure if it was actually going to be a thing or not. BUT THEN THEY GOT TOGETHER IN THE NEXT BOOK AND I WAS CRYING THANK YOU LEIGH💖💖💖💖💖💖😍😍😍😍😍❤️❤️
I really appreciate the amount of respect you have for the things that you don't personally relate to. It's so awesome that you talk about what you have related to personally and what you haven't, but still read and understand what other people have been through. It makes me really happy that understanding people like you are talking about these things :)
Is that the British cover of _History is all You Left Me_ in the background? DID I HEAR A REQUEST FOR RECOMMENDATIONS AT THE END THERE? I think I did! Most, if not all, of these are about MM relationships, so I'm sorry about that, but as a gay man myself, that's mostly what I look for. _Of Fire and Stars_ is on my tbr though. First, _Half Bad_ by Sally Green. I mean good god. The main character is questioning and there's a male character who is in love with him. The sexuality stuff is definitely not the main focus, or even a particularly important one, but the reason I'm recommending this series first is because of how damn good it is. The first book was the most harrowing thing I've ever read, and the sheer frankness of the portrayal of Nathan's abuse is so powerful. The second book was not as powerful until the last third, but the third book was just as good as the first. _Timekeeper_ by Tara Sim is fucking amazing. It's about a world where magic clock towers control time, but there's a revolutionary group bombing them and stopping time. The main character Danny is a clock mechanic, people born with the ability to see and repair the strands of time, whose dad is trapped in a stopped town so he has to prove himself to the lead mechanic in order to be selected for the rescue mission to build a new clock tower to free the stopped town. Danny is assigned to the Colton Tower in Enfield where he falls in love with a clock spirit, which is illegal. It's SO GOOD YOU WON'T BELIEVE IT. _Wonders of the Invisible World_ by Christopher Barzak is too complicated to explain when it comes to the main plot and it's best to go into knowing nothing and having no expectations, so let's just say it's about a boy living in a small town whose world is irrevocably changed when his best childhood friend returns from his life in the big city. I knew I was in for something great when I read the first sentence. _Proxy_ by Alex London is a sci-fi/dystopia about a boy called Syd who is a proxy, which basically means that he is punished for someone else's crimes. When the boy he proxies for accidentally kills someone, Syd is sentenced to fourteen years of hard labour and has to escape before that can happen. _The Cat in the Cradle_ by Jay Bell is a fantasy about a boy called Dylan, who is the son of the Blue Oligarch, one of the magical rulers of the world they live in. Then someone starts assassinating the Oligarchs and stealing the Lokas, which are crystals imbued with elemental powers. The Blue Oligarch gives his Loka to Dylan and tells him to go and hide with Tyjinn, the Red Oligarch. Needless to say, Dylan and Tyjinn do not stay out of trouble for long. _The Foxhole Court_ by Nora Sakavic is about a boy called Neil who is the son of a mobster. He's in hiding, but he gets scouted by a high-profile sports team and since his love of the sport is all he has left, he joins the team, resolving to leave before he can be seen in the public eye. Things don't quite go to plan. _Willful Machines_ by Tim Floreen is about a boy called Lee Fisher, who is the closeted son of the president of the United States, which, due to the rise of artificial intelligence causing a good deal of death and destruction, has begun to socially regress, which basically means things are not good for gays. Also, with the looming threat of a terrorist attack, Lee is placed under constant watch and never has a moment's peace, which is not fun when he's trying to get with the cute new boy at school. Don't read this until there's news about the sequel, because not one major plot thread is resolved by the end. I'm not sure if you've read these next few, but they are incredibly popular, so sorry if you have: _The Raven Cycle_ by Maggie Stiefvater cannot be adequately described, so I'll just say it's about a group of rich boys trying to find the burial site of a dead Welsh king with the help of a poor girl called Blue. One of the boys is gay and another is definitely bisexual (this is not explicitly stated, but he never indicates that he has any problem with falling for a guy). Please ignore the official synopsis for the first book, _The Raven Boys_, because it doesn't do the series justice _at all_. _The Darkest Part of the Forest_ by Holly Black is about a brother and sister, Hazel and Ben, who live in a forest village famous for its faeries. The main attraction in the village is a horned boy sleeping in a glass casket, and Hazel and Ben have both been in love with him for their entire lives. Then all hell breaks loose when the casket is found smashed open and the horned boy disappears. _Six of Crows_ by Leigh Bardugo is about six morally bankrupt individuals performing a heist on the most secure facility in the world. One of the main characters is bi and one is gay and they live in a binormative society so this is not seen as weird. /End potential already read books. Right so these next two are only implied, but are pretty much obvious. _Bartimaeus_ by Jonathan Stroud is about a djinni called Bartimaeus who is enslaved to a brat called Nathaniel. Bartimaeus is known to have had a very close relationship with a boy and this was later confirmed by the author to be a romantic relationship. The first book is _The Amulet of Samarkand_. _The House of Mountfathom_ by Nigel McDowell is about a secret order of wizards who try to prevent the Irish Civil War, mostly focusing on Luke Mountfathom, the son of the most respected wizards in all the land. The main characters are two boys who have a very close relationship which to me was obviously meant to be interpreted as romantic, considering that they sleep in the same bed and one of them says that the other is where his home is. This last one is just irritating. _Falling Kingdoms_ by Morgan Rhodes is about the death of a wine merchant's son causing a world war, sneaky political intrigue, and ancient elemental gods. There is a gay couple in it, but it has the "only guy I could like" trope, and is constantly cockblocked by various deaths, resurrections, misunderstandings and possessions to the point of making me absolutely furious. What's worse is that it's actually a damn good ship and the fact that stuff keeps getting in the way pisses me off. I'm not sure if you've read the _Magisterium_ series (by Cassie and Holly Black) but if you have, I'm pretty sure that Aaron has a crush on Call (_The Bronze Key_ made it really obvious imo), so that might go somewhere, regardless of _certain things_ that have happened.
I read Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda recently and loved it! I also have read ALL of Adam Silvera's books, he's one of my favorite authors! I'm so happy you included them. Another good book is The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
I SEE THAT SHADOWHUNTERS NECKLACE!!!!!! Also, have you read Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe? It's a really good book about two gay characters (the people in the title) and is told in Aristotle, or Ari's, point of view!! It's REALLY CUTE!!! And it's really heartwarming and deals a little with Ari's slight denial of his own feeling for Dante and his own homosexuality at a whole, and Dante openly expressing he loves Ari, but tries to move on, WHIKE STILL BEING FRIENDS WITH ARI! It's somehow relatable, even though I'm ace not homo.
GrayscaleMedia holy shit it is in no way shape or form acceptable for a GROWN MAN to date what equates to a JUNIOR in high school. Legality does not equate to being moral
So since we cant rely on the law to give us guidelines for morality, and since morality is in itself subjective, what other parameters are there to give us an idea of what can generally be considered acceptable, morally? It must be your personal opinion.
I dont know if you have even read the book but guessing by your great arguments, Id say you havent. The story states clearly that Elio has had sexual experiences before and knows what he's getting himself into. He is self aware and knows what he wants and why. At no point in the story does Oliver persue him, pressure him, talk him into anything or display any other predatory behavior. If you dont like the movie/book, thats ok but dont make up arguments that have no base just to make people feel bad for enjoying a beautiful and perfectly innocent story.
thank you for this video! i love how you included books that maybe not a lot of people have heard of. it seems like every time i watch one of these videos, all the books are ones that EVERYONE has read before (and for some reason they include harry potter??). i love your taste in books omg
queens of geek and every heart a doorway are so high on my to buy list. literally the moment i have the money i'll be buying them! yess i'm so incredibly happy that asexuality is getting more rep!! i know i belong somewhere on the ace spectrum but it's not as black and white with me. it's a weird mix between asexual and demisexual and honestly i'm so excited to read books with ace characters to see how i do and don't relate. i don't really feel the need to be represented myself, but i am interested to see how i can relate and how things might be different with others. AH i'm just so happy :D
it's basically that you can't feel sexually attracted to someone unless you become deeply emotionally and or romantically connected with a person (than it becomes Possible to feel sexual attraction) the level of connection it takes for sexual desire to form is dependent on how close the relationship is rather than initial attraction. i say i'm a weird mix because i even when i am romantically i still often cannot feel any sexual attraction. i am not sure if i'm fully asexual or if it just takes me even more to become sexually attracted to someone than what i've heard form the average demi sexual (since demi sexuality isn't talked about that much i don't know many other stories of demi people, that makes it a bit harder for me to say whether it's a label that fits with me. i've only read one book with a demi sexual character and i didn't feel like that was how it completely worked for me, though i guess it's a bit different with everyone)
What a wonderful video! Can't even explain how much I loved it, and how much my heart grows seeing my sexuality and all these other letters being represented in literature. The book that represents me the most in that aspect is "Ask The Passengers" by A.S. King, not just because the main characters's life and personality are so similar to mine, but because this book has quotes about finding yourself and coming out that are just.... amazing. Like, it's what I always thought but was never capable of putting into words. It helped me a lot, and it still does honestly. Recommend it sooo much!
Carry on is a LGBTQ+++ novel. Although it does not mainly focus on the romance which is a good thing I think because it doesn't always have to be about that stuff, but the LGBTQ++++ stuff is still very present.
I started watching several days ago but I respect you. You're one of the best booktubers I've ever watched. I love when you're talking about topics that are not talked about more. I just love you and I feel like you are my friend even when I live in Poland. ❤️❤️
History is All You Left Me has been one of my favorite books of all time since it first came out in January. Even though I personally am not gay, I feel like anyone who has gone through breakup, heartbreak, grief, depression, or loss of any kind can relate to this book. Adam is perfectly able to capture the mindset of a struggling teenager. I recommend it to everyone.
so glad you made this! i finally got to reading simon vs. the homosapiens agenda and it was sooo good and i am looking forward to reading the other books recommended!
I absolutely loved this list, thank you Emma! New subscriber here :) I am so happy that you also included a book you didn't necessarily like, and that you didn't act like you liked it either. Feels much more genuine that way! I catch myself giving people recommendations for books I hated, because I know they might like it, so it is a valuable trait to know that not everyone is going to feel the same about any same thing. A couple of LGBTQ+ books you can add to next years list are 1. Will Grayson, Will Grayson by John Green (Not my favourite, but worth while) 2. The upside of unrequited by Becky Albertalli, though the mc isn't herself gay, she has two mothers and a twin sister who are gay. 3. Half Bad by Sally Green, although I won't spoil who is coming out in this one 4. The rest of us just live here by Patrick Ness, a beautiful book with mental health rep, a gay best friend and a whole lot of indie people. That's the ones I felt could be included in a video like this, but yeah. Besides number 2, none of these has gotten 5 stars from me.
Annie on my Mind by Nancy Garden is one of my favorites! However, I believe it was first published in 1992 so it's probably pretty out of date for the times. The book spoke to me when I was first trying to understand myself and I believe it does a great job representing what the experience can be like
the shades of magic trilogy features two mlm characters who are in a relationship with each other and they honestly have the best love story out of anyone else in the series. i highly highly recommend.
*rant coming up* Emma, tysm for not only being such a book lover, but for supporting the LGBTQ+ community. Now while i’m not personally apart of this community, i well enough know many people who are apart of it. I don’t see why anyone should be anti the LGBTQ+ community. People are expressing how they feel. Who they wanna be. People being apart of this community is not wrong. It’s how they believe, how they live, and nobody should be treated differently because of this little detail in someone’s life. It’s not okay and I just feel like the LGBTQ community are not appreciated enough. While they are more appreciated a bit now, they’re still bullied and outed. I want someone or something to change that!!
I've started reading a gender fluid book called Symptoms of Being Human. I'm not in love with the book, but I think it does really well with the representation (so far at least)
I'm so glad you loved If I Was Your Girl because I love that book so much!! I'd recommend None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio, not sure if you've read it but I think you might have! Regardless it's a great book about intersex!
One LGBT+ book I definitely recommend is We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson. It is about a gay boy in high school who gets abducted by aliens ever so often, and the aliens give him the option to save the world from imminent demise if he just pushes a big red button. He is undecided whether to push the button or not because he is bullied at school (so he doesn't really care if the world ends) until a new boy at school with a mysterious background makes him reconsider. It's a great story about friends, family, high school, bullying, and gay relationships. It's similar to Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe, except it's more sci-fi.
ahh i'm so happy you made this video. i've been looking for some good lgbt+ books to read lately because of how much i've enjoyed the ones i've read. i can't wait to read all of these!
If anyone wants to know more LGBT+ books, I would recommend I'll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz, and We Are The Ants by Shaun David Hutchinson. The first two I have read and absolutely LOVED, the third one I have not yet read but I've heard its a really good book and represents pansexuality in the main character which is really awesome to me because I'm pansexual and can never find any representation in shows/books. :)
Oh my God thank you for pointing me to Queens of Geek it is amongst the most realistic portrayals of autism I have ever seen I've only a quarter way through the book but I just keep going yes oh my God that is so true. I love that its own voices because neurotypical people tend to try us like always formal robotic Sheldon Cooper clones who don't understand affection or emotions. We're not sociopaths people, we feel things, we tend tofeel empathy very intensely we just have trouble with the type of empathy where you put yourself in someone else's shoes, if someone else is feeling sad or a person or an animal is suffering we feel it. The fact that she swore and youth casual language made me so happy. the portrayals of her anxiety and rigidity were so relatable there are many instances in which she reacts exactly how I would have at 18.
Definitely gonna check out the books with ace characters. I never seem to be able to find any! As for LGBTQA+ books I really loved and felt did a great job portraying these sexualities: -Dante and Aristotle Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sàenz (gay main characters); -The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson (two trans male characters, one female to male and one male to female); -Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin (main genderfluid character along with a few lesbian, gay and trans characters); - None of the Above by I. W. Gregorio, which features an intersex main character; - and Radio Silence by Alice Oseman, which features a biracial bisexual character and an asexual homoromantic main character (along with another gay character and possible lesbian or bi character - - its not specified I believe)
I read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens ageda last year (not in English because our school's library is mostly in German) and I think this story is really heartwarming. I don't know why I picked it up, I just saw a light blue book between all those black books and I thought why not. Yes I did kinda take it because of the cover😂 Anyway, I don't regret having read this book!
Emma I just wanted to thank you/commend you for going that extra mile by including the reviews/thoughts of people of the LGBTQIAP+ community. Love you xxx
Love this video. In regards to "If I was your girl," I would advise anyone who is currently reading and/or wants to read it to read the author's note at the end. It answered many concerns I had while reading it. The audiobook is fantastic as well/ I'm excited to read "Tash hearts Tolstoy" I don't know a lot about asexuality and although I've done research, seeing a romantic relationship play out or reading from the pov of an asexual main character would help me understand it more. Great video as always, Emma :)
I have been dying to read an Adam Silvera novel for ages!!! I think it's great so many books are so diverse!❤️ Surprised u didn't mention malec and heline!😂 I no u always talk about The Mortal Instruments!! It's my fave 2! Btw we have the same name🌷😜
My #ownvoices recommendation is The Ghost of Buxton Manor by Jonathan L. Ferrara, it's a gay romance with some paranormal elements and loosely based on Rupert Buxton and Michael Davies (inspiration behind Peter Pan). You should check it out!
I'm so glad there are LGBTQ books out there, but it's quite hard to find the + (asexual, demisexual, pansexual, etc.) I always watch these videos and take a moment to realize how everyone's gay or Bisexual. Since I am pan, it's hard for me to find a book with a character I really connect with. I have found an amazing book that deals with other sexualities and it has become one of my favorite books of all time, but I can never find a list with it on there. I guess it's just not very well known, but I wish it was. It's called Radio silence for anyone that wants to check it out. Anyways, I was really glad to see more diverse characters in your list. :)
awh hahah tha's very kind of you, but i wouldn't necessarily consider myself the queen of diverse reads since it's still a new genre of books for me and there are definitely people who i look up to in the community for their diverse reads
Surely there are more people out there who read as diversely as you but I can only speak for myself and from I watch, you are always so passionate about reading different content. I just love that about you and am always thrilled to get more recs on different topics! I trust your taste and objective opinions on books. You also helped me (and pretty sure many others as well) become more aware on mental health which --no need to say is extremely important. Thank you for being so genuine and lovely❤️ xxx
Hi Emma! If you haven't read Jane, Unlimited by Kristin Cashore I would definitely recommend it! It's never explicitly stated that I can remember but Jane definitely feels attraction to both men and women and as a bisexual human I felt it was done very well.
I cant wait for the 2nd book to Of fire and stars! It comes out next year tho 😭 but thanks for the recommendations ! Totally gotta check lot of these out !😁
The Cybernetic Tea Shop by Meredith Katz is a really lovely novella about ace lesbians (one is an android, one is a mechanic). Into the Drowning Deep by Mira Grant and Barbary Station by R E Stearns both have autistic lesbian main characters and ITTDD has a bisexual character (ownvoices, Mira/seanan McGuire is bisexual) and two Deaf characters too.
I now have even more books on my TBR list now. That happens a lot when I watch your videos though. I also add a lot from SophieSeries too. I'll have to find and follow you on Goodreads!
Leo Bautista he's literally 17, the age of consent is 16. Oliver is 24. elio makes his own decisions to be with Oliver, never does Oliver force or prey on elio. But your opinion is your opinion so...
@@leobautista4039 it's over the age of consent... And it's only7 years different. You've Been saying this on every comment mentioning call me by your name. If you have nothing nice to say then please dint comment.
I’m too excited to wait until the end of the video to know if you mentioned it, but the book Girls Made of Glass and Snow by Melissa Bashardous is a great retold fairytale and it’s the author’s first book!! A princess and a nurse fall in love but it’s not what the whole book is about
The list of letters before the + sign grows longer. Who decides which letters get added, & are there other letters under consideration that may be added at a later date? Just wondering.
TimeAndChance although i am not part of the community i did some research and basically more letters are added to the acronym as a sense of representation. yet when LGBTQ was first dubbed the q stands for queer which was supposed to represent all other sexualities in a general term but other sexualities didn't feel well represented (mostly asexuals) there had also been another acronym BSM (Gender/Sexual Minority) but the person who coined the moniker had also included pedophiles in it (???) but im not completely sure **i apologize if any of this was incorrect it is just what i read on a few websites**
Originally we were called the gay and lesbian community. As other people became more vocal they started being added to the acronym because not every queer person is homosexual. I don't really identify with LGBT any more and prefer to be part of the queer community (different but overlapping, more inclusive than LGBT) but when I did I leaned that the letters and the + mostly just depend on location. In Canada they add a 2 because of the native two spirit thing, but in the UK we don't tend to use that. The most prominent parts of the community get a letter and the rest have to make do with the +. Personally I prefer QUILTBAG to LGBT, it's more inclusive and it's fun.
I used to love reading when I was younger and then didn't really have the time during my senior year of high school and first year of uni but I'm totally getting back into it now that I'm on holidays for a few weeks and to see that there are actual books with asexual characters makes me so happy!! As an asexual I can't wait to read the books you recommended with asexual rep! Thanks so much :))
If you are looking for a book with fantasy. A book very much like Harry Potter but with lgbt characters. You should read Carry on by rainbow Rowell it is really good.
thank you!! i think authenticity is really important when it comes to books depicting certain marginalizations, and i'm happy we have so many reviewers in the community that can speak on it!
Woot! Emma actually included the "P" when mentioning LGBTQIAP+. THANK YOU! 💛 We don't get mentioned much when people talk about the community/the letters (I don't know the proper word for the letters lol.)
@@sokkvabekkr5973 asexuality doesn't affect romantic attraction and intersex means you have an intersex condition such as AIS, XY chromosomes but a female body. How does that affect love at all?
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell was the first LGBTQ+ book I ever read and I’m still obsessed with the book. It’s just a really amazing story and I love it soooo much! And Aristotle and Dante is also quite amazing, those two are my favorites out of any books I’ve read before! I highly suggest those!
Thank you so much for this Emma. I'm the only asexual person I know and I've never found a book with asexual characters until now. This made me feel less alone. Keep up the great videos!
There's a books called "This Book Is Gay" by James Dawson that talks about what each sexuality is and how to like be proud of your sexuality I guess and the narrator is a gay male. He also answers many questions that some people might have about their sexuality. I haven't finished it yet but it's a good book
I was so expecting some Shaun David Hutchinson omgg. I've not watched many of your vids yet but if you haven't, you should definitely read We Are The Ants
Olivia Siggers omg finally!!! I was looking for another Rick Riordan fan
Don't forget Cassie Clare!
YES
I was gonna comment this!!!! I love Rick!!!!
you are lovely
emmmabooks as are you! Love you girl!!!!
The Fairest Fangirl same here girl
I am also bi, married to a man, and a lot of people think I stand for Pride things just for attention, when I just happened to have fallen in love with a fan. I felt so validated when Emma said that! I wish more people would acknowledge bi people, even in the LGBTQ+ community.
I have to read Of fire and stars too. I've recently found the book on amazon and thought it would be perfect for me so now I really want to have it
Your bookshelf is like a paradise... also loves your videos
thank you!!
Love In The Middle Kingdom - A story of gay love set in modern day China. Available on Amazon if you wish to view. Thank you.
Whenever I want to read anything LGBT I have to make sure it doesn't state it on the back becuase of my younger siblings and my parents 😤
Fangirl Of Course Ughhh same
Yeah me too it sucks
same ://
Same
Carry on doesn't state that its lgbt on the back
I really love how you didn't just review/recommend books but you did extra "research" and asked
People who were LQBTQIAP+ to actually put their thoughts on it. 😊💕
thanks so much for noticing ;)
Lauren Ann
LGBTQIAP? what is that?
Jay Sieger
Ah, ok. Thanks ☺
I don't have too too much knowledge on the accuracy but I do have recs that fall under LGBT rep:
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell that features both a bisexual and gay character
Our own private universe by Robin Tally which features a black bisexual character
The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller (and also one of my favorite books of the year)
Aristotle and Dante Discover the secrets of the universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz
i loved the first two! i haven't read TSOA, and personally i didn't like ari and dante but i know a lot of people really do!
Create&Dream The song of achilles is the best!
Create&Dream NOOOO STOP
Carry On and Aristotle and Dante were really good, I haven't read the other two though
i don’t think Simon’s sexuality was ever confirmed, it’s more open to interpretation.
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is a good LGBT book
What's about?
Im Reading it now it’s meant to be a Christmas gift so I’m not meant to but it’s too good
I loved that book so much
Literally my favorite book ever
My favorite book🥺❤️
Lol i was reading Carry On when i got the notification
oooh i loved that book!
emmmabooks I did too!!! four pages left and it will be over😭 i'm not ready can't wait to add these books to my list
I LOVE THAT BOOK
Omg I had finished reading carry on this morning!
carry on is BEAUTIFUL
I can't wait to read Of Fire and Stars, lesbian princesses ftw!!
ITS SOOOOO GOOOOF
Another LGBTQ+ book (it's actually a trilogy) is Bad half. In the first book the main character is in love with a girl but in the 2nd and 3rd book he discovers his sexuality and falls in love with his best friend. I loved that book / trilogy!
ooh i did not know this because i only read book one! thanks for letting mek now :))

So many people say that it isn’t a real sexuality because aces just haven’t met the right person yet 😔
@@anduril2132 that’s not true babe, if you identify as asexual that’s completely valid, these people are just ignorant & we need to either educate them or ✨ignore✨ them because if they ain’t trying to learn then they aren’t worth our time.
LOVELESS BY ALICE OSEMAN IS FUCKING AMAZING!
finished it last week and it was honestlysuch a rollercoaster!
I love that book!!!
Emma is so awesome when she does things like this, no one In Book Tube ever does special videos of mental health or sex or LGBTQ+ content and so I love her for bring original and awesome!
thank you so much!!!
Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. One of the best books this year. Loved it.
i loved it!
Yesss
absofuckinglutely omg
Yassss i can wait to real wayward son!!!😍😢
I knoooOOOw
Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe is INCREDIBLE
i'm glad you enjoyed that one!
I've just spent about an hour watching homophobic videos (from my country) and replying to homophobic comments (I don't know why I'm doing this to myself ) But this video popped up in my recommendations and I'm now really enjoying myself watching my dearest Emma talk about LGBT books. She is such a precious snowflake ❄❄
i hope your mental health is well after dealing with all of that grossness XP
And now Love, Simon is an adorable fluffy movie. The March really did do it for us
GIVE ME THE FLUFF
THE BEST KIND OF BOOKS
Yessssssssssss
Me: *sees Carry On sitting on the shelf*
Me: *wonders why it wasn't in this rec*
Mollie Pond it’s not a comprehensive list of every book with LGBTQ+ characters I’ve ever read, just some of my personal faves!!
oh, okay!
not even kidding i fast forward the entire video to see when carry on would disappear from the shelf but it just never happened lol
chittaphonish same same same
When u mentioned Adam Silvera I actually screamed into my pillow because THIS MAN DOES NOT GET ENOUGH MENTION and I am soooo happy u did I automatically subscribed liked and saved in my emotional outburst.
Thank you so much for including a few books with ace/aro representation! It's not very easy to find those books. Also, "The Song of Achilles" by Madeleine Miller (I think?) is a retelling of the Achilles legend, featuring a gay couple as protagonists. I really enjoyed it and can definitely recommend it!
i've heard great things!
IL Eck. READ THIS Y'ALL.
it's so lovely to see that people that i look up to have such an open mind!
you're so sweet
Caleb Herondale You have such a nice username! (I'm Bane after Magnus Bane
I absolutely loved this. My sister is a Lesbian and my friend is Pan! this video made me so happy because your so supportive of every different sexuality even ones that weren't in the original Lgbt+
i honestly don't understand how people support only certain populations within the community. you are very kind!
Sydney Wilson 2 of my sisters are lesbians and I'm ace and aro so I usually just go with LGBTQ+

How about no.....
isn't one of them a teen and the other an adult?
OMG YESSSSS!!! 😍😍
I legit cried when the first book was a wlw love story in a fantasy setting with no homophobia. SO refreshing, can't wait to read it
the foxhole court is the only book i've read with an explicitly demi main character plus it's self published and has some of the most interesting morally grey characters i've ever read about (there's a lot of trigger warnings though so if anyone's interested they might want to look those up)
also how triggering do you think "not otherwise specefied" would be for someone in recovery from an eating disorder? your makeup is flawless by the way 😀
i've really been interested in TFC, i may need to check it out!
i cant speak for all those in recovery for EDs, but i felt NOS was the least triggering of all the books about EDs that I've read. The main focus of the story isn't her disordered eating habits, but it's about handling life while in recovery. Personally, it was more relateable to where I am now in my recovery as opposed to romanticizing the parts of my disorder in the past & triggering me. That's just my personal experience though!
That's my fav book omg akfjslbf
Loving the asexual rep
i'm happy we're getting more rep!!!
For the people who are sluts for books instead of people💜
^i relate^
But asexuals aren't lgbt+...
i kindly beseech you to go away:)
Also has an asexual main character!
I have to admit, I began the book but to me it read like bad,y written fanfiction... I didn't get very far because I just personally didn't like the writing style, but if its wort pusihng through I may retrty...
another one of my recommendations is Carry On, by Rainbow Rowell. it has a m/m couple (one gay, one isn’t confirmed but most likely bi or pan) and a f/m friendship (which we all need)
also, i’ve only read two of the books on this list (SVTHSA and IIWYG) so thanks!
Your top is stunning!!! I still can't believe I haven't read Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda.
Have History is All You Left me on my shelf - super excited to get to it although his other one sounds even better!!!
thank you love! they are such great books :))
Seeing how Simon Vs. The Homo sapiens Agenda has turned into Love, Simon, I'm so proud.
UMMM EMMA??? How dare you look so good?? I can't even focus on the video because I'm too busy staring at your perfect face. Honestly so RUDE 😫😍❤️
ahhahha you are too sweet! i'm blushingg
IKRRRRRRRR
WOW IM LATE
I'm not sure if you've read these next few, but they are incredibly popular, so sorry if you have:
_The Raven Cycle_ by Maggie Stiefvater cannot be adequately described, so I'll just say it's about a group of rich boys trying to find the burial site of a dead Welsh king with the help of a poor girl called Blue.
MY GOODNESS I AM BLESSED WITH THE RECSS
haah yes that is the uk cover that's visible bc i keep so many LGBTQ+ books there so it's currently showing XD
Oh mu god, I read timekeepers but had completley forgotten about it. Its so good and I totallh forgot it was lgbtq. On my reread list now for sure.
I read Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda recently and loved it! I also have read ALL of Adam Silvera's books, he's one of my favorite authors! I'm so happy you included them. Another good book is The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue
I have just added many books to my TBR. Thanks Emma.
you're welcome!
Call Me By Your Name is an amazing read! Definitely worth reading for anyone seeing this!!
GrayscaleMedia uh CMBYN heavily features pedophilia so
GrayscaleMedia holy shit it is in no way shape or form acceptable for a GROWN MAN to date what equates to a JUNIOR in high school.
YESSSS
thank you for this video! i love how you included books that maybe not a lot of people have heard of. it seems like every time i watch one of these videos, all the books are ones that EVERYONE has read before (and for some reason they include harry potter??). i love your taste in books omg
LOL HARRY POTTER IS NOT AN LGBT BOOK
thank you so much!!!! that means a lot ot me :)
queens of geek and every heart a doorway are so high on my to buy list. literally the moment i have the money i'll be buying them!
yess i'm so incredibly happy that asexuality is getting more rep!! i know i belong somewhere on the ace spectrum but it's not as black and white with me. it's a weird mix between asexual and demisexual and honestly i'm so excited to read books with ace characters to see how i do and don't relate. i don't really feel the need to be represented myself, but i am interested to see how i can relate and how things might be different with others. AH i'm just so happy :D
i hope you read some great books that represent you soon
FluffyUnicorn what is demisexual? 🙈
it's basically that you can't feel sexually attracted to someone unless you become deeply emotionally and or romantically connected with a person (than it becomes Possible to feel sexual attraction) the level of connection it takes for sexual desire to form is dependent on how close the relationship is rather than initial attraction.
i say i'm a weird mix because i even when i am romantically i still often cannot feel any sexual attraction. i am not sure if i'm fully asexual or if it just takes me even more to become sexually attracted to someone than what i've heard form the average demi sexual (since demi sexuality isn't talked about that much i don't know many other stories of demi people, that makes it a bit harder for me to say whether it's a label that fits with me. i've only read one book with a demi sexual character and i didn't feel like that was how it completely worked for me, though i guess it's a bit different with everyone)
I'm trying to read more diversely so I'm so happy to see you uploaded this! I recently read History is all you left me and I loved it soooo much
i'm so happy to hear that! :)
history is a fabulous book, i'm so glad you loved it!
Who else loves Emma's new profile picture?
thank you
What a wonderful video!
Recommend it sooo much!
ooh i have not heard of that one but thankk you for the recs!
Carry on is a LGBTQ+++ novel. Although it does not mainly focus on the romance which is a good thing I think because it doesn't always have to be about that stuff, but the LGBTQ++++ stuff is still very present.
ah i loved carry on!
chill out with the pluses please lmao
I started watching several days ago but I respect you. You're one of the best booktubers I've ever watched. I love when you're talking about topics that are not talked about more. I just love you and I feel like you are my friend even when I live in Poland. ❤️❤️
you are so kind, thank you so much!!!
I recommend it to everyone.
yes i think there are so many different people who can relate!!
That book is gold!
so glad you made this! i finally got to reading simon vs. the homosapiens agenda and it was sooo good and i am looking forward to reading the other books recommended!
I heard If I Was Your Girl also has a transgirl model on the cover, so that's great! :D
I commented before I watched the whole thing, sorry! Also, the author was also trans? Cooler! :D :D
I'm planning to read Queens of Geek next month and I'm super excited about it :D
i bet you'll love it :)
"Leah on the off beat" is amazing another simonverse book
I picked up 'seven ways we lie' and i'm sooo excited to read it. tysm emma, pls make a part 2 💞
I've started reading a gender fluid book called Symptoms of Being Human. I'm not in love with the book, but I think it does really well with the representation (so far at least)
i've really been wanting to read that one!
I'm so glad you loved If I Was Your Girl because I love that book so much!! I'd recommend None of the Above by I.W. Gregorio, not sure if you've read it but I think you might have! Regardless it's a great book about intersex!
i actually JUST saw that book on a pride month book rec, i'm really really interested in it!!!!
Bruja yessss and ‘at the edge of the universe’ by Shaun David Hutchinson
Okay side not. The mortal instruments books and that angelic rune necklace has me geeked. Yessss I love it
A lot of these are already on my TBR and I think I discovered all of them to you😂 So thank you so much!☺
awh i'm so glad to hear it!!
ahh i'm so happy you made this video. i've been looking for some good lgbt+ books to read lately because of how much i've enjoyed the ones i've read. i can't wait to read all of these!
thank you!!
ILL GIVE YOU THE SUN IS 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼
I love so many of the recs you said. I haven't read all of them but the ones I have are really diverse.
that's so great!!
As for LGBTQA+ books I really loved and felt did a great job portraying these sexualities:
-Dante and Aristotle Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Sàenz (gay main characters);
-The Art of Being Normal by Lisa Williamson (two trans male characters, one female to male and one male to female);
-Symptoms of Being Human by Jeff Garvin (main genderfluid character along with a few lesbian, gay and trans characters);
- None of the Above by I. W. Gregorio, which features an intersex main character;
- and Radio Silence by Alice Oseman, which features a biracial bisexual character and an asexual homoromantic main character (along with another gay character and possible lesbian or bi character - - its not specified I believe)
love the shadow hunter books in the back hehe
same
I read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens ageda last year (not in English because our school's library is mostly in German) and I think this story is really heartwarming.
Love you xxx
i felt it was the best way to get the authenticity of these books across! thank you and love you too
Love this video.
A film of simon vs is coming out (ha) next year :D
Thank you so much for this rec!! I’ve been having so much trouble finding good lgbt books. I’m so ready to read all of these
I have been dying to read an Adam Silvera novel for ages!!! I think it's great so many books are so diverse!❤️ Surprised u didn't mention malec and heline!😂 I no u always talk about The Mortal Instruments!! It's my fave 2! Btw we have the same name🌷😜
ah TMI isn't considered an LGBT+ series because the main characters are all straight, but i do love them very much!!
I really wanna get "More Happy Than Not". I've a feeling it's gonna emotionally destroy me tho.
Looooove Adam Silvera. I just got into his books recently and I love them all so much. Glad you included them💗
THE ANGELIC POWER RUNES GOT ME SHOOK
Carry On, I’ll Give You the Sun, Aristotle and Dante, and The Song of Achilles are some of my favorites!!
My #ownvoices recommendation is The Ghost of Buxton Manor by Jonathan L. Ferrara, it's a gay romance with some paranormal elements and loosely based on Rupert Buxton and Michael Davies (inspiration behind Peter Pan). You should check it out!
thank you for the rec!
I give you, Queen of Diverse Reads, people.
awh hahah tha's very kind of you, but i wouldn't necessarily consider myself the queen of diverse reads since it's still a new genre of books for me and there are definitely people who i look up to in the community for their diverse reads
It's never explicitly stated that I can remember but Jane definitely feels attraction to both men and women and as a bisexual human I felt it was done very well.
sneaks glance at Carry On on my nightstand and Simon Vs The Homosapien Agenda on my bookshelf
I cant wait for the 2nd book to Of fire and stars! It comes out next year tho 😭 but thanks for the recommendations ! Totally gotta check lot of these out !😁
AHHH I LOVE THIS VIDEO SO MUCH! I LOVE YOU SO MUCH! *gayness intensifies*❤💛💚💙💜
ahahah thank you!!!
I think I really wanna read 'seven ways we lie' in the future🤔
it is definitely a new favorite of mine!!
emmmabooks sounds so different and so interesting!
20 and wandering Just finished it and would definitely recommend it! It's on my list of best stand alones I've read this year
Cassie Great! I really need to read stand alone books in generell because these series run away with my money! 😅
I had to make a promise to myself to only read stand alone books until at least august for that exact reason!
I now have even more books on my TBR list now. That happens a lot when I watch your videos though. I also add a lot from SophieSeries too. I'll have to find and follow you on Goodreads!
where my "call me by your name" at
i haven't read it!
emmmabooks you definitely need to!!!
Grace Newman CMBYN glamorizes pedophilia
As someone who's not a member of the community, I personally don't know! I'm sure there are resources online that would answer that question :)
TimeAndChance although i am not part of the community i did some research and basically more letters are added to the acronym as a sense of representation. yet when LGBTQ was first dubbed the q stands for queer which was supposed to represent all other sexualities in a general term but other sexualities didn't feel well represented (mostly asexuals)
there had also been another acronym BSM (Gender/Sexual Minority) but the person who coined the moniker had also included pedophiles in it (???) but im not completely sure
**i apologize if any of this was incorrect it is just what i read on a few websites**
Thanks for all the great recs. I think it's awesome you reached out to own voices reviewers and included that info :)
thank you!! i think authenticity is really important when it comes to books depicting certain marginalizations, and i'm happy we have so many reviewers in the community that can speak on it!
Woot! Emma actually included the "P" when mentioning LGBTQIAP+. THANK YOU! 💛 We don't get mentioned much when people talk about the community/the letters (I don't know the proper word for the letters lol.)
YOU DESERVE TO BE MENTIONED
emmmabooks you're so sweet. thank you so much. 😁💓 and can I now fangirl because you replied? Because heck yes haha. Dream achieved!

Favourite book tuber 😍
you are the best!
Thank you so much for this Emma. I'm the only asexual person I know and I've never found a book with asexual characters until now. This made me feel less alone. Keep up the great videos!
check out this list for more recs ;) www.gayya.org/masterlist-asexual/
I literally quited everything I was doing to watch this :3
hope it was worth it XD
There's a books called "This Book Is Gay" by James Dawson that talks about what each sexuality is and how to like be proud of your sexuality I guess and the narrator is a gay male. He also answers many questions that some people might have about their sexuality. I haven't finished it yet but it's a good book
i never knew the "...iap+" existed. Good to know
yes! they're important parts of the community :)
I was so expecting some Shaun David Hutchinson omgg. I've not watched many of your vids yet but if you haven't, you should definitely read We Are The Ants
