This laptop actually sounds pretty nice. Its not even close to perfect (lack of ports, bad speakers, screen, battery) but it has an actual gpu and its less than 400 dollars.
I have an upgraded version of this laptop 705dt. Your points are mostly valid and i think my laptop being 17 inches might have led to better thermals. Something i would say is the body is probably better than you think -- its a bit hollow and maybe a bit too angular but there is a ton of durability in the design for a gaming laptop. The hinges are very robust and I think shocks are absorbed pretty well. Its probably not as great as an older school think pad but its still pretty good
Because the laptop has an option for a 144hz display, it is possible that you can try overclocking the 60hz panel to the 90hz you desired, as the eDP interface connecting it to the gpu will likely not be a bottleneck. It also depends on if the NVIDIA gpu is hooked up directly to the display, but you can go into the nvidia control panel, change resolution, and create a custom resolution. There you can try higher than 60hz refreshrates. I was able to overclock the 60hz panel in my old dell workstation laptop to 100hz this way!
If the nvidia control panel doesn't have a lot of options, that likely means it isn't directly hooked up to the display and you cant use this method to overclock it.
Recognised the laptop from the thumbnail and I had to watch. I've dailied a 505DT (Ryzen 7 3750 and a gtx1650) for 4 years now since I started at Uni and wasnt sure if I could fit permanent space for my desktop into the Apartments. The Asus is just a jet engine, that weighs way too much, the powersupply is also a heavy fire hazard and the laptop is uncomfortably warm under any load. I've also had the power supplys die on me 2-3 times while having it (I imagine its surely partially my fault ofc) and theyve not been cheap to replace. Ye right-click on the trackpad is abysmal its not just a skill issue. I will say though, the 505 itself is a TANK, I've abused the crap out of this thing over its 4 year lifespan, its been dropped, stepped on and thrown around in my bag, and seen horrors that keep me up at night when I think about how dusty I've let it get. And it just keeps on chugging along with some scuffs and snapped plastics here and there. Great video! but you kinda missed the mark on your laptop choice. There are laptops almost every day with gtx 1660s or the rx 5600m and ryzen 4000 or 5000 cpus at or very close to the 400$ mark. And with those specs its actually not too easy to beat building a desktop! maybe give them a look 😁

I got a desktop (Custom built 4070 super build). But needed a cheap laptop for some editing as I take Media in college now. Bought a Lenovo Legion 5 that's got a Ryzen 7 4800H, 16gb dual channel 3200mhz ram, 512gb NVME with an addition slot for a future upgrade (Ram ofc can be upgraded too) and a GTX 1650ti, a 1920x1080p 144hz IPS display, and got it used for £225. Its actually practically new, the battery basically has 100% health, and the SSD barely has any read and writes to it. Its in fantastic condition to! Definitely a steal if you go hunting enough haha.
I have a somewhat newer version of this laptop with a Ryzen 7 4800H, a GTX 1660ti 6GB and 16GB of RAM and when gaming or doing some more intensive tasks this laptop is freaking loud. I remember being younger and playing games secretly at midnight and my parents literally heard me BECAUSE OF THE FANS.
I was recently gaming on an older i5 (forget) with a 1650 max q before I upgraded. The high temps seemed to just be how those laptops handled usually, as mine would hover around 70-80 most of the time when gaming as well, even when newer. Overall if you're someone like me who played older games it wasn't a bad option and 100% workable if you're traveling and such. Kind of amazing what you can get nowadays for not much money, I remember when doing any sort of 3D gaming on a laptop immediately meant you were paying at least $1,000.

I should get myself a proper laptop that has more power to run games but I'm surprised at the remarkable gaming performance I get out of my Thinpad E-560. Being a low-cost business laptop the 560 can run Fallout 4 on low/medium with tolerable framerate and New Vegas on mid/high settings at about 40 fps average, it will not play games like VirtualDelinquent 2077 but New Vegas is the only thing I play on it. The surprising part is how Fallout could even be playable on this machine because it's equipped with an i5-6200U, Intel's HD 520 iGPU, 8GB of DDR3 at 1600mhz, and a Crucial MX500 1000GB SSD. I just wish it was a Brickpad instead, Lenovo's Thinpads are too flimsy.
@@aChairLeg It works no doubt, although recently I've been having crashes with minimal mods installed and I can't figure the reason since it rarely did that before. Needs more power.
Bought a used fx504ge back in 2022 for 450 bucks, it was my first ever gaming device and was probably my worst decision ever haha the hinge was shit and the cpu and gpu always thermal throttles. Before I didnt pay any attention to this issues but now it is really annoying, But after learning how to undervolt and changing it's bios and fixing the terrible hinge design with epoxy. it's OK now lmao.
Thoughts on getting a workstation laptop to use as a gaming laptop? I've been looking at the Dell Precision 7720 with the Quadro p4000. Quick ebay search tells me you can get one for about $450, which is $50 more than what you got but seems to have equivalent performance to a GTX 1660, 32gb of ram, and a 1tb SSD. Only problem is the GPU is a workstation card, but looking at benchmarks, it seems to be able to game well enough.
ALSO, I _think_ the P4000 is an MXM card, which sells for about $200. You can buy a 1060 MXM card also for $200. If the workstation card doesn't game, you could probably do a swapy. Hmmmmmmmmmm
If the performance is there for you, workstation laptops are really well built and *usually* cooled better due to how chunky they are. I actually made a video on the Thinkpad P51 if you want more insight there. I'd go for it if it checks all the boxes though.

These had a MSRP of $1,000, and the seller wasn't even able to even get HALF their money back on it. The resellability of a laptop makes them a really bad investment. They really are bad for the Eco system as most people will either throw them away or let them rot in storage if they can't sell their old ones. DON'T BUY A USED LAPTOP!
Had this laptop for about 3 years. I had constant issues with it. The included Realtek Wi-Fi chip in this laptop was genuinely god awful. It kept cutting out and I was eventually forced to buy a new Wifi chip on amazon to replace it. Wifi worked fine after that. I also had constant issues with the FANS. Yeah, they were loud, but the worst part was THE FAN BEARINGS KEPT BECOMING MISALIGNED. A horrible rattling sound came from the fans after about a year. I ended up replacing the fans twice on this machine. One dayI plugged it in one day and it just... turned off. No reason why. Really dissapointed with ASUS on this one. Don't buy this. Buy an RTX 3050 laptop on sale for ~$500 if you're desperate.

How can 8 gigs of RAM "suck" on a machine that can't even come close to using 8 gigs of RAM while gaming? I'm honestly getting tired of all the "8 gigs of RAM is bad" gaslighting. It's an actual scavenger hunt to find games that max out an 8 gig RAM system, but so many TH-camrs still claim that "8 gigs sucks". Yeah, if there's actually no difference at all for 90+ percent of games, then it really CAN'T "suck" but you're obviously smart to know that, hence my frustration. Remember, we are talking about sub-4k gaming (I know RAM requirements get a lot higher with 4k gaming, but this is not a laptop designed for 4k gaming so... 🤷♂️). I'm sure I'll get people arguing with me, trying to get me to deny my own eyes, but it is what it is.

These had a MSRP of $1,000, and the seller wasn't even able to even get HALF their money back on it.
The resellability of a laptop makes them a really bad investment. They really are bad for the Eco system as most people will either throw them away or let them rot in storage if they can't sell their old ones.
DON'T BUY A USED LAPTOP!
you should try a razer blade
I'd like to at some point
Now do a dell Latitude
It's coming

its funny to watch this with the same laptop just with intel cpu insted of amd and upgraded ram tho not used for gaming much only at friends house its good for 600 bucks i paid back in 2019-
1650 isnt THAT old. Gotta be the single channel ram that kneecaps it. My dad plays games on his 1050 laptop just fine. Also, fortnite stutters like hell in anything but dx12.
I like how you keep calling it an "old" laptop, it looks like a pretty new and up to date one to me. 😂
The 1650 is what makes it feel old to me
drinking hand sanitiser LMAO
Lovely Asmr Talking

"Since this is a first person shooter"

9:01 you don’t have to explain why you play as a chick, we get it 😊 as I heard somewhere: if you are going to invest X amount of time in a video game where you have to be looking at the backside of your character all the time, at least make it enjoyable 😂
8 GB
WUT
🤷♂️). I'm sure I'll get people arguing with me, trying to get me to deny my own eyes, but it is what it is.
are you okay, sir
@@Matt-oq4jq nice try 😂
so basically a meh/10
