    Whoa whoa, wait 1:34. GH is not CONVERTED to IGF-1 in the liver. IGF-1 is produced by the liver in response to GH, but it's not one protein being converted into the other. This is like saying a phone call is converted into a pizza when I order pizza by delivery. The signal (GH/Phone call) instructs the manufacturer (cell/pizzeria) to produce and release the new product (IGF-1/pizza). And by the way, GH does also have some direct effects on growth apart from the production of IGF-1.
    Also 5:10 steroids do NOT, I repeat, DO NOT have a receptor in the cell's membrane. As they are lipids, they go through the membrane on their own, and then bind to receptors INSIDE the nucleus directly. The androgen receptor officially designated NR3A is attached to DNA in the nucleus and sits there waiting for an androgen (such as testosterone) to bind to it.
    Hope it helps :). Sorry if it sounded rough, but I have a pharmacology exam tomorrow about exactly this subjects (among others) and if I were to say those two things my teacher would rip my head off :P.

The only thing that matters is that they as a whole show try to be as close to scientific fact as possible. A lot of musicians use propanolol as well, especially classical musicians like pianists or solo violinist where they're expected to play from memory. The pressure of having to play a couple thousand notes in the correct order in front of a massive audience without sheet music can be fairly nerve wracking. The physical effects of nervousness and anxiety (the shaky hands, the inability to make your fingers move fast enough or press hard enough) can destroy a performance no matter how mentally prepared you are. A lot of them turn to drugs like propanolol that don't really effect your mental clarity especially students doing exam performances or entrance exams where more than just your reputation or ego is at stake.

    • @VideoNozoki

      I've tried it. It is mild (like aspirin for a headache or one drink). You still feel quite nervous, just a LITTLE less than before taking it. It is also taken to lessen back spasms (it doesn't stop them, but makes them slightly less strong).
      (I've never tried valium, but I imagine that if FAR stronger)

    I have a really bizarre, and probably completely immoral thought... but I secretly wish they'd do a version of Olympics where there's no drug regulations whatsoever, with the exception they have to list all the stuff they use, so the drugs is seen as no more than the advanced equipment they use, just to see how much "better" humans can be when using drugs to enhance the performance.

You spend time and effort simulating the strains of an entirely different lifestyle just because that's what your body needs you to do to stay functional.

    There's also doping in robotics competitions. It was actually a huge problem at the 2014 California state championship for VEX. Roughly 2/3rds of the teams were suspected of tampering with the motors in ways that increased output and put them at an illegal advantage. But only one team was actually caught because all the other dopers had spare, non-doped motors for inspection.

      ***** I don't understand why people go in to being an athlete and think it's going to last their whole life, though.
      I understand that you should want to do it, perhaps. Or that, you could consider a short time within that field. But I think maybe you can think of going a different route, when you start to think that your body can't keep up.
      I'm not sure of what kinds of money athletes like that make, but I'm sure it's more than me, and I'm sure they're able to find those different routes a lot easier.

  • @Numbers_Game
    @Numbers_Game 10 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    Those drugs are only illegal because of the side effects. Most of the athletes didn't want to pay the price and so they banned them. If they redirected their energy from explaining why it's bad to trying to figure out how to remove the undesired effects while keeping the increased performance, that would be beneficial.
    Not a lot of people have a problem with people using vitamin & mineral supplements, do you think they wouldn't use steroids if there were no drawbacks because it's "unethical" or cheating"?

    • @88rowey
      @88rowey 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      not entirely true.most of the health problems related to steroids are still largely debatable due to the difficulty of conducting accurate studies... there is also banned (but not illegal) supplements such as peptides and SARMS which show anabolic effects but have hardley to nil side effects from taking them....hell,even some creatines are forbidden to athletes...the reason why these supplements are forbidden is because it gives a notable advantage over someone who does not have excess or is not taking the same product.

    • @Numbers_Game
      @Numbers_Game 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      88rowey Someone who does not have access? Hmm, you would think that all professional athletes would have enough capital power to purchase those products.
      At the end of the day it all comes down to advantage, whether it be genetic, financial or the use of illegal substances. While genetic might be the least notable advantage, it is an advantage none the less.

    • @88rowey
      @88rowey 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      NOBUNAGA1991 some professional athletes in under develop countries cannot afford exspensive supplements and treatments.....thats not to say i dont agree with you.there is multiple levels of what you can define as an 'advantage' and i actually believe genetics is a huge one....furthermore i personally dont beleive steroids should be illegal for people who are not competing and just wish to better themselves as long as its monitored by a medical professional.if people are allowed to destroy their livers and lungs by drinking and smoking then a person should be able to take performance enhancing 'drugs'

    The reason for the 4% increase in sprint performance in cycling is due to the added mass from the HGH. The sprinters in cycling are generally the guys who are taller, heavier and have larger upper leg muscles. This is because of the extra force exerted by gravity on the down pedal and because of this they don't have to push as hard on the downpedal.

    Not mentioned here was amongst other things Caffeine, and synthetic Adrenaline / Epinephrine.
    Caffeine is a mild performance enhancer for both mental and physical activities in dosages on the order of one to a few energy drinks. (100mg+)
    I know some weight lifters who used moderate dosages of Epinephrine to boost their maximum lift during the hardest part (fewest reps) of their training cycle to increase hypertrophy. In higher dosages you increase the risk of tearing the muscles because you are essentially putting your body into overdrive using "fight or flight" mechanisms usually reserved for life-threatening situations, where tearing a muscle is preferable to dieing.

    I do understand the restrictions surrounding PEDs, so the following paragraph is more hypothetical and slightly devil's advocate, but even still I think it's something we should genuinely consider, even if briefly before it's dismissed.
    What's really so wrong with doing things that improve your performance? Wearing shoes makes people better at running, and the better the shoe, the better the performance enhancement. When athletes started competing in running competitions with specialised, spiked shoes they didn't ban the use of shoes and make them run barefoot (although they did in the original Olympics, I will point out). If taking propranolol makes you tremble less, and your trembling is costing you shots when you shoot, why not take it? How is it any different to a situation where spikes on your shoes makes you slip less and slipping is costing you seconds in a race? Similarly, what's wrong with taking a drug that speeds up recovery from an injury? If your career is on hold for as long as you're injured, surely you'd want to get back into the game ASAP, what's wrong with that? I'm actually surprised they don't make that kind of thing mandatory for professional sportsman who receive an injury (at least one that actually works to speed up recovery... this deer thing, I dunno)- people take drugs to speed up recovery from infections, are we saying professional sportsmen and women should be banned from using those as well?
    Anyway, that's just my little rant on the topic... something to think about I hope.

    I'm sorry but everyone I've known from all circles who was into being an athlete and working on their body always took some some kind of "performance enhancing" pill/food/drink/etc.. • @BobClemintime
      @BobClemintime 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      True but many of those don't really have much of a measurable effect, can be gotten "naturally", and/or have very little side effects. For instance, a healthy diet will usually boost performance better than supplements.

      That is just a example of how prevalent they are in athletics when they attempted to get him to try. I'm not saying that all top level athletes take them, but I will say that there are a large number of them that do so they can compete at those levels. Your father was obviously one the the gifted individuals and had the wonderful genetics to be able to compete and not need to use them, but for a lot of the other athletes out there they don't have that advantage and therefore utilize them to enhance the abilities to be able to compete.

    As a 13-year-old competitive BB gun shooter, I can say that getting nervous about your score makes your muscles tense up and start quivering, therefore bumping around your gun and making you get 2 points when you were aiming for a bulls-eye. Cheating using hypertension drugs seems kind of smart, but hey, cheaters never win.

    I don't see why blood doping is such a negative thing. I mean yeah, cheating and strip him of his medals and all, but you put it in context with other very damaging steroids. I simply don't see how it's harmful. If I wanted to run some huge distance just to see if I could do it, and was ok with blood doping to accomplish the goal, what would be the harm?

    Steroids get a bad rap simply because we don't have very conclusive information about taking them. there have been literally NO studies done showing long term negative side effects when used in the recommended way. We have only found negative long term side effects when steroids are abused up to this point, and negative public perception also comes from the fact that they are illegal to use in most competition rather than them causing negative effects in and of themselves.

    The information on steroids is poor and oversimplified at best or disingenuous bordering on propaganda at worst.
    Anabolic androgenic steroids AAS have multiple sub types with varying chemistry, effects and risks. moderate doses of human tested injectable steroids have never been found to be the cause of death in anybody.
    Only Orally active steroids have ever found to be liver toxic1
    Any man who is using sufficient testosterone with their cycle won't suffer erectile dysfunction so you are completely in error to claim or imply steroid use stops you having sex (if anything it's the opposite)2 .
    AND 3: The long term fertility risk is so minor that Testosterone is being investigated worldwide as a male reversible contraceptive with a large scale study in china finding that the majority of test subjects were able to regain testosterone and sperm production after coming off of testosterone injections. Adding to this testicular atrophy isn't all that common with plenty of people not experiencing it.
    To add anecdote to this, I was prescribed a replacement dose of testosterone for a medical condition and since then I've been running a slightly supra-physiological dose of testosterone with another synthetic compound for the best part of 8 months under medical supervision. My cholesterol, heart health and liver values have all stayed well within the healthy range and I've experienced a dramatically improved quality of life overall. Your barely contained prejudices take away from the discussion and leaves a lot of information out.

    • @ToroRagazza
      @ToroRagazza 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      smoothnews "Likely" is a matter of probability, not certainty, so it is pretty much the same difference as saying "maybe". So perhaps you should take up a course in very basic English. -- Steroid use is known to have a direct link to various cancers found commonly in men and women who dope. I am a 3-year med student. I took biochemistry in university, long before med school. I question if you have ever taken a course in biochemistry yourself because you do not seem to be aware that he study of biochemistry is merely the basis to all biological studies. It does not argue against my theory at all, whatsoever. It is funny how you say that I should take a course in biochemistry rather than oncology, the study of cancer itself. If you want to be an arrogant piss of knowledge, then how about you show that you know what you are talking about? Maybe start by making an attempt at challenging my argument that you apparently disagree with, rather than trying to be condescending to make your self look educated? Read this peer reviewed study: 'Adenocarcinoma of prostate in 40-year-old body-builder'

    • @smoothnews
      @smoothnews 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** I'm sorry I can't, or rather, don't want to write a whole long response like yours. I appreciate it though, truthfully. I am applying to med school this cycle. M3 huh? I hope you are not suggesting biochemistry has nothing to do with what you are discussing. I am shocked and appalled however that you prefrace the definition of the vast and crucial field of biochemistry with the word "merely." I did not assume you would take an oncology course, as most of the population outside of medical students and graduate level scientists have the opportunity to such. I apologize for that assumption but you are right, an oncology course would be more appropriate to our discussion. I hope that since I took the time to write this, that you read it in its entirety---something that you did not do last time. If you had done so, you would see that I do not deny the greater risk of prostate cancer. That is a very very basic fact. I won't bore you with the details as I assume you know how it occurs, processes involving such terms such as: oncogenes, enlargement of the prostate, etc. Therefore, regarding the study you posted, we both agree on it. However, I wish that you put peer-reviewed CASE study, so that those not exactly familiar with the nuances of scientific research do not get confused with a larger study. As you know the case study you posted has an n of 1, which you know means that its generalizability is poor. It would be essentially similar if I performed and posted a study named "Adenocarcinoma of prostate in 40-year old cologne salesman." Does that mean that the man's exposure to the cologne fumes caused or increased his likelihood of prostate cancer? No. I hope you know where I am going with his. I am going to put this in caps so if anyone sees this just skimming they get this message. THERE IS NO LINK BETWEEN ANABOLIC STEROIDS AND TESTICULAR CANCER. Not a single reputable, unbiased, and reproducible study has found such. As I said before, regarding other forms of cancer, you might have some arguments. This is just a message to you, and hopefully you can pass it on to your fellow classmates. As doctors, I implore you not to fall victim to dogma. There is a lot of dogma being perpetuated in the medical school system (**AMA monopoly cough cough) that I believe is absolutely damaging to the health and more importantly, THE WELL-BEING of the patient (it seems that the latter is often forgotten). Time after time, in my experience shadowing one of the most progressive urologists in the nation, I have seen time after time patients who have had symptoms of andropause, their previous doctors have just ignored, or just gave them Cialis and sent them off (as many doctors believe that this is a better ("safer") option to TRT. It is disgusting. I am sorry that I rambled throughout but I am tired.

    • @ToroRagazza
      @ToroRagazza 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      smoothnews I did not say that biochemistry has nothing to do with the subject. I said that it does not argue against my theory that doping is likely how Lance Armstrong developed cancer. So your next step is to learn how to read and stop inferring things that weren't said.

    Not quite fair to suggest that no studies find a supplement to be beneficial. It needs to be evaluated in the same scenario that the dopers are using. Whilst conducting research into steroids I found that many old studies said that anabolic steroids had no effect. This was because they had to use such low doses to pass ethics boards and didn't reflect actual doping amounts.
