    Well, in this video, I'll go over the Pros and Cons of being a per diem nurse and I'll show you how many shifts you would actually have to work to earn as much as a benefited employee, while also being able to take time off for vacation.

    Another great video, Jason! We've chatted before but this is helpful. When I graduate this December, me and my wife (who is also an RN) plan to move to the Sac area. We were wondering if it would be smart for one of us to be per diem. Couple questions for you: could you do a video explaining pension? Also, if we get jobs at one of the hospitals that have 8 hour shifts, do we choose how many shifts we work? We'd probably want to work closer to full time hours. Thanks man!

    • @NursesToRiches
      @NursesToRiches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Justin!
      Having one of you work a benefited position while the other works per diem would be the best of both worlds because the per diem employee would be earning more per hour and would also be able to follow the other's work schedule so you could both be off on the same days-giving you more time off with each other.
      I could make a video explaining pensions but I would have to do more research on the topic to make sure I'm giving you accurate information.
      Lastly, if you get a job at one of the hospitals that have 8 hour shifts, you usually have a variety of templates (or positions) to choose from with differences in the required amount of working hours. For example, at Kaiser, you'd be able to work anywhere from 20 to 40 hours per week, depending on which position you apply for.

      @@NursesToRiches Full time is on average 1,920 hours if you have 4 weeks vacation a year. Let’s say they did that, most nurses would probably go per diem. Most hospitals would probably see that as a loss. They always win, but if they did do that, that would be fantastic! I always wonder how most of these institutions come up with pay rates.

    1. As per diem nurse at Kaiser, are you expected to pick up shifts on that 38 day off example at 6:10? Because at 3:00 it says something in bold that I don't completely understand: "For prescheduled vacation and..." to "... - Availability for Extra Shifts." What's that all about?
    2. Would Kaiser let you know that you can't keep doing that if you did that per diem example pattern the whole year? Lol
    I would think the answer is they can't tell you anything because of the strong nurse union they have right?
    3. Can you pick up shifts during your 38 day off example?

    • @NursesToRiches
      @NursesToRiches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      1. They won't cancel you if you are working someone's vacation or continuing education days. Also, you can get penalized if you cancel the shift when you're working for someone in those scenarios. However, if you are sick, you can still call out sick without being penalized. Also, availability for extra shifts just means making yourself available if they need you. They never say or do anything to you if you are always unavailable outside of the minimum required shifts.
      2. They will never hold it against you if you only pick up the 4 shifts per 2 pay periods for the entire year.
      3. You can pick up as many shifts as staffing or your coworkers are willing to give you.

    Hello. I have a question.
    I wanted to work as Per Diem in Kaiser however i am from overseas so i would like to go or have a vacation in my home country say 3 months. Is kaiser flexible on allowing Per Diem Nurses to go on vacation that long?
    2. If you will be per diem example in Pedia. Are you only allowed to pick up shifts in your unit? Lets say there is no shift vacancy and i would love to do overtime, can i pick up in other unit?
    3. Are there really a lot of shifts available wherein you can pick up or depending on the season?
    Thanks!

    • @NursesToRiches
      @NursesToRiches  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The answers to your questions are:
      1. No, they won't allow you to not pick up shifts for that long.
      2. No, you cannot pick up shifts in other units unless it's one medsurg floor to another. Or unless you are a telemetry nurse that also gets floated to a medsurg unit. But, let's say, your an ED per diem nurse, you cannot pick up a shift in a medsurg floor or the ICU.
      3. The shift availability is cyclical. Most of the year you'll be able to pick up as many shifts as you want. But there are times where there won't be many shifts available to pick up at all.

    • @NursesToRiches

      Nope, the employer will not cover the cost. For most employers you'll be lucky if you get any benefits at all as a per diem employee. Per diem employees go per diem for the flexibility and pay. I know of one nurse who has a home in Georgia and uses to travel back and forth every other week but it's become too expensive and not worth it so now he owns a home here in Sacramento and took on a benefited position.

    Hi Jason, it might have gone over my head in the video, but does the overtime pay work the same in a per diem role as it does if you’re an employee? Do all the same rules apply (eg overtime accrues after 8 hour shift) and can you extend per diem shifts in the same way for overtime hours? Thanks I love your videos!

    • @NursesToRiches
      @NursesToRiches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, overtime and a half after 8 hours and double time after 12 is a California law. So, regardless of what your title is, unless you are a salaried employee or there is another exception, you qualify for overtime as a per diem employee just like a benefited employee. However, the 6th day premiums, 7th day premiums, and run pay is a benefit that is only available to regular (not per diem) nurses within the Kaiser system.

    • @ashleymeyers209
      @ashleymeyers209 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@NursesToRiches Thank you!! I think you said in one of your other videos that you don’t get overtime if it’s a 12 hour shift. So, if I want to work per diem and get overtime pay, then I need to look for an 8 hour per diem shift and then extend my shift in order to get overtime pay, do I understand that right? Would I always be able to extend the shift like that if I wanted to?

    • @NursesToRiches
      @NursesToRiches  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ashleymeyers209 you are correct. If you are hired as a 12-hour-shift per diem nurse you won't earn overtime from hour 8 to hour 12, but you will earn double time from hour 12+. However, if you are hired as an 8-hour-shift per diem employee, then you'll get the overtime rate of 1.5x from hour 8 to hour 12 and double time after the 12th hour.

    Years ago, when I started out in healthcare (when I was a tech and not even a nurse yet), we had self scheduling. So what I would do is put myself in for every Sunday/Monday/Tuesday. That way if I got cancelled one of those shifts I'd have the rest of the week to make it up. And if I did get all my shifts in, I could just call every day to see if they needed someone to work extra. Anyway, at Kaiser, can you schedule yourself for something like that? Or do Friday/Saturday/Sunday nights to get all the diffs possible? And if you strongly prefer to do 3 12s (like I do) can you do that, or does it have to be eight hr shifts alone?

    • @NursesToRiches
      @NursesToRiches  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      At Kaiser there is no self scheduling but they are constantly putting out different shifts that are just like the ones you've described. We also have this event our director hosts once every year or two where they allow us to drop our add days from our template. We also have plenty of 12-hour shifts. We've had some nurses, that were working 3 8-hour shifts per week (24 hrs), ask if they could just work 4 12s instead, and they had those requests approved. So, now they work 4 12s in a row and have 10 days off every other week.
      However, these things are very unit and management dependent because, although any manager/director can approve such a request, most do not.

      @@unicornhorse1632 yup, she's a teenager and never wants to be in front of the camera so you don't see her in any of our videos. The funny thing is that she says her classmates have found our videos on TH-cam and have even subscribed to our channel cause they think we're cool. Lol

    That’s it you slowly convincing me to move to California and work at Kaiser. I don’t want to be a crna no more.

      Hah, well, when I post the video about the highest-paying hospitals in California you might want to work in another non-Kaiser hospital in California.

      Maybe but at this point in my life I’m tired of working for other people. I just want to work at the highest paying hospital system in California working 10-20 years and retire early from my rental properties, stocks, and eBay business.

    I highly respect your grind and sharing to us other nurses. Its amazing the tips you share and the wisdom youre using.
    Id like to encourage you back by sharing this life is limited. Money is important, traveling is great and supporting for ourfamilies is very important. one day we all will die. I encourage you seek and get to know Jesus if he’s the truth and the Gospel. I dont want all the enjoyment of this life to end up being loted by mot entering eternity. He died for you lr forgiveness of sins and he rose again on the thhird day. I know this may look super “religious” but pls see it as a loving gesture to you to seek the Lord and invest in Heaven eternity by placing your faith and trust in Jesus (God).
    Thanks again for the great tips. Very generous of you.
