    On a rainy day in Jakarta, Ken and I headed over to a restaurant called Nasi Gandul IBu Endang, somewhere in the western part of Jakarta. The restaurant is a neighborhood restaurant known for serving a famous Indonesian dish, originally from Yogyakarta, called Gudeg, or Nasi Gudeg (because it’s served with rice). Gudeg is a jackfruit stew where the jackfruit is cooked for so long that it turns silky soft. It’s a bit of a sweet dish, but what I enjoyed so much about it was that it was so unique when paired with all the other different ingredients. The cowskin curry in particular was quite delicious.
    Another dish they specialize in at Nasi Gandul IBu Endang is Nasi Rawon which is a black beef stew made with keluak nuts. I was a huge fan of the rawon, it has a rich and an amazing flavor and you eat it together with baby bean sprouts, lime juice, and sambal chili sauce. We also enjoyed a few other Indonesian dishes during out. meal at Nasi Gandul IBu Endang.
    For our next stop, we headed over to Rumah Durian Harum, a well known spot for durian. They had just about every kind of durian you treat you can imagine, from durian juice to durian ice cream to fresh durian. We had the durian ice and a couple of fresh durian, all of which were pretty good and a nice way to end the evening.
    Nasi Gandul IBu Endang
    Address: Jalan Pesanggrahan No. 14, Puri Indah, Jakarta
    Open hours: 8:30 am - 10 pm daily
    Total price: 148,000 IDR ($11.10) for 4 people, and we ate a few different dishes.
    Rumah Durian Harum
    Total price - 165,000 IDR ($12.38)

    just to clear things up, nothing personal. we share our foods not because we are cheap, or whatever. we do it because we are trying so many things in like a very short time . we as true food lovers do not like to waste our foods. Because there are people starving in many places, we cant just order everything and waste them. :) thank you Mark for anothet nice video!

      Besides that Ken, everyone who watches Mark's vlogs knows he likes to eat family style so you can taste more things. Let the negative comments flow by you, there will always be someone stuck in their own ways with a need to correct others. Peace.

      Jesmine, there is also something to be said about that. Being too clean and too much worry about hygiene is a problem in many places in the west. It causes our immune systems to become lazy. Just as the over use of antibacterial cleansers make bacterium stronger and then antibiotics are useless. I think Mark has lived this way long enough to handle it but I wouldn't recommend it for a sometimes tourist.

    this local blogger is wrong, garang in garang asem doesn't mean scary, it's not bahasa, it's javanese so the garang means : cooked/heated

  • @imamharamain4645
    @imamharamain4645 8 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    "Garang" in garang asem i think its from javanese language. it mean heated (or cooked maybe) over fire, so garang asem literally mean sour dish that heated over fire. but in bahasa indonesia garang means scary intimidating look like ken said, i like the javanesse translation better.

    • @arivanuaranu
      @arivanuaranu 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, thank you for clearing that up! I was about to say something about this, but I thought 'garang' is Javanese for 'grill' ('garangan' itu 'pemanggang' toh?) so I was confused as garang asem is obviously not grilled.

    • @airacakep
      @airacakep 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Me right behind you. The word "garang" is for Javanese "to cook" and not for Bahasa Indonesia "scary". Hope Mark read our comments.

Even his fans that are featured on his shows in the places he visits acts like him! that's how loyal they are. they copy his bodily and face expressions and hmmms! what I like best about mark aside for describing the food to the point that you can actually TASTE IT, is his humbleness. I'm taking some life lessons on how to be humble from Mark.

    @Mark Wiens , if you want to eat the real gudeg Jogja, you must come to Yogyakarta, because gudeg is tradisional food of Jogya.
    Beside gudeg, we have a Oseng oseng mercon (Super Spicy beef) dan other extreme culinary.
    You must try sate klathak, that is a lamb grill like a sukiyaki

    actually, gudeg is made from young jackfruit which is initially sour. the chefs have add sweeteners to the stewed young jackfruit. there is also a young jackfruit dish in malaysia called gulai nangka. gulai is almost like a curry but the only difference is there is more amount of rich coconut milk being added to it. i had watched luke nguyen's mekong cooking show, demonstrating his steps to make a northern thai young jackfruit salad as his offering for monks in chiang mai few years ago. of course, we have to cut and boil the unripe jackfruit in order to remove its sourness as well as its sticky sap.
    as i said in the early video, you may want to go to yogyakarta in central java not only to try out the gudeg but also other famous local dishes there as well as to visit the famous borobudur budhhist temple, hindu prambanan temple and the active merapi volcano.

    Almost all Javanese foods are very sweet. I'm javanese if I eat Javanese foods I must add so much chilli sambals. When I moved to Sulawesi Islands, almost all the foods are very spicy and sour. very contrast but I love all of them. That is the diversity of Indonesian foods.

    little correction to Mark n Ken about Garang Asem, garang intent in the Java language is heated, so that was meant dishes heated and sour taste , not the ferocious frightening , usually cooked by steamed and wrapped in banana leaves.

    central java food is old school cooking, where flavour centers around savoury and sweet. normally sweet is for desserts and savoury is for main dishes. bacem is another example of this.

    To be honest, this stall is not represents the real 'Nasi Gudeg' itself (AT ALL).. this stall represents good Nasi Gandul, but definitely not Nasi Gudeg especially the Krecek is too very sweet! If you're looking for a much better version of Nasi Gudeg, you guys should go to Nasi Gudeg Bu Hani (Cengkareng / Mampang) with a superb krecek with hot and spicy taste with one of finest chilli sambal.

    Mark your friend Ken, maybe is a food blogger but I think he only expert in eating, since his explanation is wrong exeptionally wrong, for instance gudeg is not a stew, its a combination of several foods that can be eaten separately or together, he did mention chicken, egg, jackfruit, cow skin (krecek) which can be very spicy, gudeg is made using coconut milk His explanation of rawon is very rudimentary. Its a dish from East Java, using the kluwek fruit. Garang is literal translation to Bahasa Indonesia. And his choice of restaurants is concentrated in WestJakarta, there are lot of places in other parts of Jakarta. His mistakes are not only in this video but in other videos.I like it better when you present alone, like the soto betawi, konro etc,

    not all javanese cuisine is sweeter,,, in jakarta people (or betawinese) terms, javanese means the peoples from central & east java province, but people of west java province they called it sundanese, but actually sundanese and betawinese share the same land in java island,,, central java specially yogyakarta popular with sweeter taste, but in east javanese popular with spicy & salty taste and less sweeter,,, this is actually must be explained by ken as long as he is the food blooger also, he must knew the difference of food in java, he should be did not generalize the taste of javanese cuisine,,, but actually east java people really dont like very much with central java cuisine, it's so sweet for east javanese palate,,, of course the rawon made by central java restaurant is sweeter than the original one, as long rawon is actually the dish from surabaya originality, which is the capital town of east java province

      yeah rawon in east java not as sweet as in central java or jakarta, rawon is originally from east java

      actually i had taste the rawon from central jawa (purwokerto),,, they called it as rawon but its has not typical of rawon, it's not black at all, because their rawon is quite clear soup without the addition of kluwek (pangium edule) and the taste is sweeter,,, i didnt recognize that dish is rawon, i thought it's just local beef soup dish, but they insisted that dish is rawon,,,

      Tristan ryanto. I guess Javanese cuisine relies quite a fair bit on sugar to add taste to the dishes, unlike padang cuisine which is very much spice based. I certainly love rawon that uses the black nuts (buah kluak) generously and less soupy in the end product. It's a different taste altogether. Anyhow I think to each his on.
