Thank you for sharing this! I'll never forget seeing The Wiz as a child at The Goodman Theatre in Chicago, and the profound effect it had on me. I remember it being announced just before opening curtain that Stephanie Mills would not appearing on stage that night, and how disappointed some in the audience were, however her replacement was actually BETTER, which really drove home all the messages of inspiration that night.

(Sung by Nipsey Russel & Carousel Girls)
    What would I do
    If I could suddenly feel
    And to know once again
That what I feel is real?
    I could cry
    I could smile
I could lay back for a while
    Oh, tell me what
What would I do if I could feel?
    What would I do
If I could reach inside of me
And to know how it feels
To say I like what I see?
    Then I'd be more
    than glad to share
All that I have inside of here
    And the songs
    My heart might bring
    You'd be more
    Than glad to sing
And if tears should fall from my eyes
Just think of all the wounds
    They could mend
And just think of all the time
    I could spend
    Just being vuln'rable again
    Oh, tell me what
    What would I do?
    Oh, tell me what
    What would I do?
    Oh, tell me what
    What would I do
    If I could feel?

Yeah, fan of both this and the film version, BUT - this has the better vocals (He y'know SANG the song - which is a shame because nipsey russell has the range for it) But the film version has the decidedly better instrumental.

I will! I'm thankful that my university is teaching me to not appropriate other cultures by saying things like "music doesn't have a race". Because I understand that different music was created by, and therefore "belongs" to certain races. Like "The Wiz", which we are doing in the fall.
So I will stay in school, thanks for the inspiration.

Here's my two cents about this compared to the Nipsey Russel sung version.
I'd say that given the fact that this song is about somebody who has been rusted solid for many years and literally is an empty shell, Nipsey's whispered vocals and almost dialog performance fits the message of this song better than an all out soulful performance.

    • @GibsonDelGiudice
      @GibsonDelGiudice 9 ปีที่แล้ว +18

Except in the play it has a different context. This is sung in the Wiz's throne room in the play. In the film context, I agree, Nipsey's fits better. But in the play, this more soulful rendering works better.

    • @Th3On3Y0uW4nt
      @Th3On3Y0uW4nt 8 ปีที่แล้ว +11

+Gibson DelGiudice I know I'm a year late, but I completely agree with this. Nipsy's version was simply him telling Dorothy and the Scarecrow about his reasoning for a heart. In Tiger's version, the Wizard tells the Tin Man that he's lucky and missing out on certain things, but the Tin Man is telling the Wizard himself of the things he is missing out on in spite of that.

+RastaSaiyaman As others have said, I feel this version (along with Neyo's) fits the context of this song way better considering the context that it was originally used in. Plus it's really tear jerking when sung from the heart like this.

And that's why his version was good, his version was sung by a tin man who was rusted solid, Russel's croaky voice fitted that to a T.
