Immediately I noticed very nice detail but a tiny lack of bass. The output is about the same. I returned to 2M Bronze to compare: it sounds smooth, very balanced and detailed as well, it is a very good cartridge for sure. Then I played the remastered ‘White Album” (The Beatles) and the Black did a good job. Of course the brand new 2M Black needs some hours to run to give it’s best, let’s see what happens. ‘For the record’: I upgraded the 2M Bronze cartridge ‘only’ with the Black needle, for the body is the same (I assume). • @AudioAdvice

I tried a Sumiko Amethyst for a couple of months through a Technics SL-1210GR and a decent Onkyo receiver's onboard phono stage. I thought the sound was lovely, but the 2.5 mV output was too low, as my amp doesn't seem to have an adjustable phono level. Consequently, I had to crank the amp about 20% higher than normal to get my desired volume, which resulted in the dreaded hum during quiet bits. Since I didn't feel like buying an external preamp, I returned the $600 Amethyst and installed a $100 Ortofon with 6 mV output, and it seems to have been a good switch. Now, I'm considering trying the 2M Bronze at 5 mV to see if that gives me the best of both worlds. Seems like a good bet.

What do you consider to be better for the $$, for $100 the Red is very popular. Thanks for watching

@@AudioAdvice well for starters there's the nagaoka carts they're way better and clearer I'm not here to start trouble just my opinion.
Oh and BTW I do have your red cart it's okay for what it is.

@@Tonyplat98 nagaoka carts are objectively not clearer than these they just have a bit more of a warmer vintage vibe. really depends on personal preference and the rest of someone's setup. best advice is dont take advice from all the internet hifi "gurus" that spend more time parroting each other in their online echo chambers than listening to and enjoying records.

2M Red.... Goodness what a terrible scratchy sounding cartridge. The 2M range lack soul, warmth and involvement. Talk all you want about Ortofons history and technology but the sound quality is easily bettered by the likes of the Nagoaka.
Very basic review tells potential buyers nothing

Everyone can have an opinion, but Ortofon 2M cartridges are highly respected all over the world and supplied as the premounted cartridge by many brands of turntables including EAT, Pro-Ject, U-Turn, Fluance, Music Hall, Technics and many more. It seems odd that all those great brands would choose something that sounded bad to put on their turntables.

@@AudioAdvice Its the first thing people change as its only fitted to get people started. The turntable manufactures must get them for pennies.
