    Now I have the impulse to travel to Italy, but not to see Venecia or tasting 🍕 but to meet you in person and show you my deep gratitude for your teachings. The more valuable of those, your humbleness.
    Thanks Master.

    Thanks for this and all your videos. Certainly, peg dope, peg drops, and shortening the string are the 3 things one must do to make traditional pegs usable. But you still have to keep pushing the pegs in occasionally as you turn, which is especially awkward on the E string, and so most people still have an e string fine tuner, which shortens the string length behind the bridge from your specified 54.66mm. E string fine tuners are a "modern" innovation which is universally OK now. Actually, the chinrest could also be called a "modern" innovation, universally OK with the pickiest violinists. Geared pegs, though, you briefly snubbed in another video as unacceptable. ? But with the Wittner geared pegs, you don't need to fuss with shortening string length to get the right peghead angle and you don't need peg dope or peg drops. The Wittner pegs are easy to turn regardless of peghead angle, and you don't really need any fine tuner on the tailpiece. You said geared pegs diminished the tone, but you gave no reasoning or demonstration. I've been using them for a couple of years on 2 violins. If anything, the tone is slightly fuller/richer, since it's posslible to easily keep all strings more precisely in tune (so, better overtones) and the lighter tailpiece and full 54.66mm string length killed a few very annoying, shrill, overtones from the e string before changing to geared. Could you make a video demonstrating how you think Wittner pegs adversely affect tone? Thanks.

    Hola, hola, always learning something new 👍🏼. I used graphite, a pencil on my junk of a violin (Suzuki) 😖and it worked. 👍🏼

      I am truly amazed at your knowledge !! If I wasn't so old I would pay an apprenticeship to study under You. I have made one violin from scratch and reworked two others, still cannot play anything other than basic scales. Glad I was keeping my Great Granddaughter today and came across your site while I was listening to Sweet Violin music with her (7 months old).. I believe by her reaction she will play the Violin! @@paulsims1764 I advice putting your comment in the main comment section, or maybe emailing maestro. Replies to someone else's comments are often lost in the pile of comments.

    Hi Edgar, thanks a lot for your videos. I am a cello student and bought a cello that came with wood pegs (no ebony) and I have had tuning problems for a while. I guess that if I change the actual pegs for ebony pegs, I will solve the tuning problem. What is your opinion? Thanks a lot

    What grit sandpaper would you recommend for smoothening out varnishes on a cello?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you are not a violinmaker I would definitely NOT recommend anybody to sandpaper his varnish.
      If you are a violinmaker than go ahead. I use sandpaper to finish the varnish from 800 in the very beginning to 1500; sometimes even 2400 (MicroMesh)

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That depend from situation and situation.
      The best answer and the safest is actually don't sandpaper since sandpaper takes away.
      So it really depends what kind of instrument we are talking about and what you are going to do .
      Would you sandpaper your cars door because there is a scratch?
      Your old Bugatti?
      Your Toyota Yaris?
      Or would you go in any case to a professional car painting shop?
      I would prefer you go to a professional shop!
      all the best
