I saw The Yards several years back, and I was struck by how good it was. I kept saying it's Wahlberg's best. And then I took note of James Gray as a director to watch. The Yards was _my_ intro to Gray.
James Gray is the opposite of Nicolas Winding Refn. One is about surfaced emotions, the other is about keeping the emotions hidden. Both fantastic directors, but Gray is a better storyteller.
@@TheLunaticPenguin is an interesting observation, though I'd say that in Pusher, Bleeder and Fear X, the early Refn films, he aimed for a more visceral way of expressing emotions. Probably my favorites of his.
The Lost City of Z is one of the best films of the decade. James Gray is one of the greats.

'Little Odessa' (1994) is another great one with a great cast, including Tim Roth, Edward Furlong, Vanessa Redgrave, etc.
