- I flew to Texas with one mission in mind, to search for and catch a giant alligator gar with LakeForkGuy. We have been planning this trip for years and finally, we got to execute it. Alligator gar are the freshwater sharks in Texas rivers and lakes. These fish can reach up to 300lbs and can grow over 8ft in length. Alligator gar are a true river monster in North America.

easily one of my favorite youtube fishermen. you're so focused on what you want to catch it seems not even a rogue wave would curb your enthusiasm. i love it
Lots of medium size gar in the Trinity R. But for a giant, you need to south to the Nueces or Rio Grande. watersheds because the water is warmer and the gars don't stay dormant so long. Two gar have been taken over 300 lb from Lake Corpus Christi. One was taken by state biologists in a sampling net over 50 years ago. The other was taken with a bow a few years ago.
The one taken by bow was 8 ft 2.5 in long and 67 in in girth. using the generic calculation of length times the square of the girth divided by 800, that tapes out to 552.7 lb. They bottomed out a a 300 lb scale with a third of the fish on the ground.
Back in the sixties we kept getting No. 54 trot line cord broken there.

@@michaeljones5685 where are some good public areas on the river? I went down to trinity last year but didn’t have a boat. I caught a little 3 footer off the lake but most of the area I found was private property. I now have a boat though!! I’m really stoked and I’m coming back down at the end of the month. I live in Utah and it’s a 23 hour drive 😂😂Any info would help. There was a boat launch by a bridge on the way to Walmart,that I seen a lot of people taking off.

Hunted out to the brink of extinction and despised by anglers in the past as a competitor and nuisance fish, these ancients are the most effective natives preying upon the invasive Asian carp that dominate many of our nation's rivers. Correct me if I'm wrong. How many good things have we destroyed out of ignorance?

it was cool to see you chasing a fish you didn't know about. we don't get to see you learn a fish like that ever. it was pretty cool to see your take on those gar coming from a big fish background. they are a bucket list fish for me also. it is amazing how finicky those guys are given their size. you would think they would just gulp the bait right down. can't wait to see you get on a monster!

I've caught gar in SE Texas most of my life. The best bait I ever used was unraveled nylon rope. I used a heavy rig and put hooks in the nylon. unraveled about 6 inches, and let it lay on the water like a piece of dead fish. The nylon gets tangled in their needle teeth.

I caught a 6 foot 10 inch alligator gar that was roughly 200 pounds just two months ago. I caught it in the bay of Port O’Connor, Texas. The biggest fish of my life. It took over an hour to land by myself on a spinning rod with 30 pound braid. (Caught and released) It is on my Facebook page, for public viewing.
Also looks like the Brazos, my fiance lives right beside it in Weston lakes.
Hunting, fishing, shooting, campfires. Doesnt sound boring to me. The good life

Live Sun Perch works best on catching Alligator Gar. They love em. Just rig your line 2 1/2 feet below the bobber with the Perch swimming and catch more Alligator Gar. They'll hit the Perch quicker than chopped bait and take off soon as they hit the Perch not like they do running with chopped bait waiting to see if something is going to happen with a dead piece of meat. Hook the Perch right under the top fins on the back under the bone so they can still swim.

I don't know what you guys are using for leaders but for alligator gar especially large ones you need pretty heavy duty steel leaders. That's why they keep breaking you off.

caught my first gator gar when i was 9 on lake whitney in texas was 80 lbs my second i caught in the trinity river in ft worth and he was 6 foot long at 146 lbs. i was 19. im now 32 and havent been fishing in years

I've never called an alligator gar, but the lake that I live near is full of long nose, short nose and spotted gar...I've caught quite a few long nose and spotted that are as big as the first few alligators that they caught here today.

Smallest bait is best for gar preferably small cut bait or fish guts or just throw a top water lure
You should turn your clicker off when catching gar. They can feel that in the line... And use steel leaders. Take it from a Louisiana gar fisherman ;)
When you are ready for some big gar bit me up. I live near cedar creek lake and we catch big ones everytime we go out. 120 pounds are small for what we pull out.
Oh and your gear may not handle a big one.

I used to catch tons of them in florida, they bit on anything on top water. Good to take a few out now nd then as they eat every other fish, even the little fingerling game fish.
