Evermore (the song) has been on my depression playlist since it came out. It's a good reminder that the pain is temporary and sometimes you just need to ride out the depresso episode. At least that's how I always felt about it.
Dno if you’ve listened to "Back to December" on Speak Now, cause I loved the follow up on title track Evermore ft bon Iver when she says “Hey December, guess I'm feeling unmoored" Definition of unmoored: no longer attached. Taylor no longer goes back to December. I love when she continues or finishes stories it really is a whole music universe connected to one another.
No. Unmoored in terms of a person means feeling insecure, confused and lacking contact with reality. Not knowing how to feel or what to do. Which is how she felt during this period she is describing in "Evermore" song, as her life was falling apart and she was catching her "death" after the phonecall video. Unmoored in terms of a vessel however, is used when a vessel is no longer attached to a mooring.
I think you find some of her best songs are bonus or vault tracks… New Romantics, All Too Well (10 min), Is It Over Now, etc. She definitely doesn’t slack on those extra songs.
From what I understood Long Story Short is her telling a narrative of her past relationships before Joe and then realizing things could be different. The "I must look better in the rearview" line I think is about the guys that always want to come back but didn't appreciate her when they had her.
Love your reactions ❤ I got a bit burnt out by the back half of evermore (except Ivy... love that song) when it was released, though I've come to appreciate most of it later. I completely didn't realize the bonus tracks were there for quite a while. I was so pissed when i finally heard them since it's criminal that right where you left me isn't on the album. It's one of my favorite songs on her entire discography.
"Evermore" song, is about the period after of the illegal phone call (motion capture) and her being cancelled aka catching the "death" of her career at that time. But it can fit many narratives of course that anyone has been through. Beautiful song.
9/10 is very fair. Thanks for making me LOL with these reactions!! I don't know why but to me, I have always pictured the 2 bonus tracks on this album as coming to a fork in the road: depending of which path you follow you either go where you get stuck and unable to move on (Right where you left me); or you go down the path where you realize that you have to move on and leave what is breaking you behind (Its time to go). It's like a stop in your road after a major event, where you ultimately need to make a choice on how you want to keep going.
Totally agree with your assessment at the end. Folklore is a perfect album but this is a great collection of songs. Some of her best. I feel exactly this way about her album, Lover, which has some of the best songs she’s written against a bunch of really weak ones. (It could’ve been a phenomenal 12 song album, but apparently I’m in the minority with that thought)
Ivy is one of my favorite songs ever. And I love the use of odd time signature in Closure. She does that in a few songs to convey unease or emotional imbalance (see Tolerate It, Smallest Man Who Ever Lived, etc).
Damn. I really wish there was like a pay per song option on Patreon... Because I NEED to know how you reacted to Marjorie, Tolerate It and Cowboy Like Me... But Marjorie especially 😭 Or I am just going to suck it up and sign up for November so I can know 😂
I'd be so interested to know how you'd feel about Evermore if you had time to listen to the album a few times. For me there are probably 2 reasons it's tied for my #1 album (with The Anthology). It's the lyric writing/world building... And it's the absolutely mesmerising pacing/vocal phrasing/rhythmic drive of most of the songs. It's easily one of my favourite personal albums to sing along with as someone who's been singing forever myself. Those RHYTHMS are soooo satisfying 🤯🤯🤯🤯 the breath work and where she lands every single damn syllable (works much better on some songs than others, I'll agree) just wormed themselves into my head after just 3 or 4 straight listens through and I absolutely just fell in love with the album. Right Where You Left Me is Top 5 for me of all her music. That relentless rhythm is immaculate. The first time I was able to have memorised the lyrics and could keep up with her was one of my favourite memorising a song experiences. The variety of ways since I've worked out how to harmonise on that song is just sheer joy every single time... And it's backed by a story that also just breaks my heart every time because they may not have been breakups... But I've DEFINITELY had shit paralyse me at times in my life for FAR longer than I should have let them. For me Evermore is so much about the feelings of the mechanics of the basic instrumental, melodies and lyrics. All of the very cool production and additional instrumentals on top of all of that is a bonus 😊
I wasn't a huge fan of closure when it initially came out and then 2022 happened to me and I put on evermore. The way this song became a picture perfect representation of my soul in that moment was magical. If this song has 1 fan, it's me. If this song has no fans , I am not only dead but erased from the fabric of the universe.
I hard agree with Ivy. 6 listens in and it became my favorite! I think the clash between music and singing in closure is intentionally jarring to go with the theme of lack of closure being jarring. For me this one is a grower. I like you take on this one. If you listen to any of her songs in your free time I’d love a video on which ones have grown on you and which ones you initially liked that faded. The immediate cats connection💀💀💀 Also, I hoped you hated Cowboy Like Me 😂 Also you’re amazing
I CACKLED at so many points of your reaction 😂 I'll freely admit, half of the time it was shutthefuckupnow alongside the cackling 😂 at one point I legitimately wanted to throw dry cous cous at you to get you to stop when you were on a roll (yes, it was the rant on the beginning of Right Where You Left Me)... But I enjoyed the reaction, thank you 😊
@@markabusireactions you don't know how badly dried cous cous in the eyes stings (it's part of a South African comedian's skit before you think I'm crazy 🤣).
I fully agree that there are parts of Closure that don't quite work. That definitely for me also goes past purposeful juxtaposition, because as you say, there are places where you KNOW they are actually getting the juxtaposition right. I've played around vocally with another friend of mine singing along with this. We found that there were ways of coming at the verses by cutting out some of her lyrics and using more of a staggered stacatto on some of the melodic lines that sat alongside the production that worked far better. Of course, we were stoned the one time we both thought we'd done it the best and didn't record or annotate 😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂😭😂 I don't try to make excuses for this one. It doesn't work the whole way through... But where it works is incredibly exciting and I think sets up some of the really cool things she does on tracks on Midnights, for example. I even see some of that played out in how quirky Down Bad was.
Nooooo!! This reaction made me properly look at evermore again and who do i see in there? Who did she swirl into all her poems, locked in a vault in lower case letters? 😤
@@markabusireactions I am 40 so definitely not young, but just noticed you have a ring so I’ll stop being a cradle snatching bandit 🙏☺️i will appropriately enjoy your dulcet tones as a new sub xox

Finally another person who appreciates closure for how experimental it was
It’s not meant to be danced to, it’s an art piece. I love that she’s brave enough to do it even if it’s not one I put on the playlist.
