- Today I have the Galaxy A13 5G, model A136U from 2021. This one has a shattered OLED but the glass itself is intact, this is the frustrating alternative of "everybody's home but all the lights are off". Stick around while I get this one fixed up, links to tools and parts below:

This video showed exactly what I needed to do: swap the screen on my A13. You make it look easy. :) I just did mine earlier today. It took me longer than 4:29, but I managed it. To any non-professionals out there, I might give some lessons learned. First, don't poke at the battery with something sharp, such as the tweezers shown, when trying to remove the battery. Second, make sure you get all the way under the earpiece speaker before applying pressure against the glue. Third, don't forget the volume switches. As a final comment, I will note that they seem to glue everything, including the back itself. When I had to open it up again (because I forgot the volume switches), it was still a tight fit and took some work to get it open.
If you aren't sure if you want to attempt this yourself, start with this: see if you can get the back off. If you can do that, you can probably do the rest.
Perfect advice! Batteries hate being popped, and sometimes give a nice fireball to let you know how dissatisfied they are. The earpiece speaker loves splitting in half, of all the things they glued together well, this is not one of them. And boy is that volume flex fun to try to remove, I'd say it's about as hard as the battery honestly. Glad my video helped you out!
@@TapticDigital I assume that popping the battery makes it more dangerous and probably less reliable. Would putting something on the hole "fix" it, or do I need to replace the entire battery?
I put the battery back in the phone as-is, and it still held a charge, so I wasn't sure what I should do with it.
I did some googling. It sounds like even a tiny hole is not good (and, as you say, the fizzle is not a happy sound). I'll plan on replacing the battery. If it doesn't explode in the next week (waiting for parts), I'll consider myself lucky.
@@brianconant6559 I'd replace it if it's punctured. Especially if it smells sweet, almost "fruity". Small dings here and there rarely cause issues, but when in doubt, swap it out

Thanks so much for making this video. I thought that I bought just the glass replacement from Amazon, but I found that I had bought the kit with the whole new assembly. I was actually watching a different video, had removed the broken screen (what fun), and realized something was wrong. So I found this video, and working slowly--somehow, amazingly, my phone works again and has a new screen. I think that the hardest parts were removing the broken glass (which I didn't even need to do), and the most difficult part was getting the darned cover off! I found that the picks in the kit were too soft, so I used Tortex purple guitar picks...they were instrumental in getting the cover off. And of course, I forgot the little metal clip (even though you did mention it in the video) and had to take the cover off a SECOND TIME. I think that I used up a month's worth of curse words this afternoon. Again, thanks for doing this video--you make it look very easy! :)
I'm glad it helped! Guitar picks are actually an official tool that iFixit makes for opening devices, so you definitely went the right direction! And glass removals... There's a reason I use framed displays, that's for sure. 😉

Thank you for the video! I didn't notice you having to swap out the volume control pads. @Taptic Digital, do you have any suggestions? It seems that Injured Gadgets' Refurbished replacement kit DOES NOT have the volume control pads.
It's weird, some include it and some don't. Absolutely saturate the ribbon and buttons with isopropyl alcohol, a little bit of heat will help too. Try to work an edge up and slip tweezers under it, working your way along to break it free while avoiding pulling on the ribbon itself. It should pop right off and once the alcohol is dry, it'll be sticky again and go on the new frame!

Yup! Just a drop of two of alcohol should loosen them right then, once it dries off some of their stickiness returns

Thanks - great video. Your phone came apart much easier than for a 1st timer, but the steps and commentary were spot on. I struggled getting the back off and the battery out but overall, the job went smoothly and the results are great.
Once you've opened a bunch of them you start being a bit less gentle you get used to how hard you can go without damaging them! I will say the battery always poses a challenge, even with heat and alcohol it rarely wants to come out easily. But I'm glad you got yours fixed up and that my video helped! Thanks!
Video was great! Replaced my screen with relative ease. But now my volume buttons aren't working. Any suggestions? I'm assuming I missed hooking something back up.
Those volume buttons can be really tricky, and the ribbon they are on rips super easily. Make sure the cable is fully connected and that the buttons make a good “click” when pressed, if they feel more “squishy” you may need to replace that button ribbon which thankfully is less than $10 from most places.
Changed out the screen. The loud speaker has a crackle to it if there's bass or up to high

B7000 silicone based glue, it holds the motor but is also flexible enough to keep it from rattling or shaking around too much

@Taptic Digital Thank you for the video. May I ask the final resolution of the screen?. Let's compare it to a TH-cam video. The replacement you used would end up having a 720p resolution or 360p?
It is the same as factory, so 1080x2408 or about 1080p in terms of resolution

Good overall, but I can't get the cover back on. What's the trick? It fits snugly at the photo lens end, but not at the charger port end. The phone works fine, too.
I think you could have spent a little time on placement of the volume leads. They have to sit snugly between two pins.
Update: Everything is fine now. I needed to tighten down the screws. It clicked into place.

Make sure nothing is blocking it for sure. The back panel is slightly smaller than the phone so it clicks in, you may have better luck starting at the bottom then clipping into the top. Alternatively, use the pry tool you used to get it open to pull the bottom lip out and close it that way.

Installation was much easier than it looked. Turns out the hardest part was getting the phone open.

Thanks! Sometimes when removing the earpiece or loudspeaker the front membrane or "cone" of the speaker can come out a bit, this has a tendency to damage the hair-thin copper wires that connect to it from inside the speaker, and you end up with either no audio or a blown sounding speaker.

@@In_Need_of_a_Savior yup, just replacing it is going to be much less headache unfortunately. Sometimes you can align them just right and make them work again, but the vibrations will slowly loosen it again.

I prefer double sided tape wherever it can be used, personally. In the video I did glue the vibrate motor with B7000, a silicone based adhesive.
What kind of double-sided tape was that? Some special thing, or will any do?
As long as it can last a while and hold up to heat and moisture it’ll do just fine. I use Tesa tape, a few vendors sell it. It’s got a white and red logo.
How thin was the double-sided tape, and where did you buy it?
I believe the tape is a bit less than a millimeter. I prefer to use Tesa tape if you can find it online, but you can find very similar tapes on Amazon
I got the new kit but adhesive tape for battery and glue for speaker isn't in the kit .... So where could I find what kind of glue and that same tape for battery
The speaker may not need it to be honest. For the battery you can use any thin generic double sided tape, I usually put a minimum of two strips to secure it
The replacement screen/frame I received does not have the up/down volume part included. A bit nervous about how to remove that from my old frame.
Isopropyl alcohol! Absolutely saturate it then gently peel off. A hair dryer will also help quite a bit. Try to peel up one little bit and shimmy your tweezers under the ribbon, working it up instead of pulling on it directly

Question.... i have a galaxy A12 and lets just say that it reminds me of a windows 98 PC on how much it freezes and how slow it is. Is there any components we can change to make it faster and less likely to freeze up? Just like upgrading parts of a PC to make it better.
I wish, from the cost you get the proper tools to reprogram chips and components and the time to learn and test, you may as well buy several new phones. The best thing you can do is keep your storage as free as possible, and do a factory reset every once and a while

I have T-7000 adhesive. Is that also suitable for the battery? I don't have the ability to readily get double sided tape quickly.
Should work just fine, use a small amount in case it needs to be removed at a later time

Thank you for this video. The most difficult part was taking the back off. I have no idea how you can do it so easily. Gear diff? I think I have a different version, because some components were at slightly different places, but in the end I managed to do it. I only cut myself once. :D
As long as the injuries stay low and the device gets repaired, I call it a win! As for the back panel, I think most people will go in very carefully and gently, while I've done it so many times I just know how aggressive to be.

I have the same phone and I had water damage on my screen and had it replaced and it works very well now doesn't look like anything happened
Most places seem to use OEM Samsung parts, thankfully they are readily available and work without issues, unlike Apple.

Very similar, but they likely use a different part. The non-5G is model A135, while this one is A136.

It isn't necessary, but you can definitely reuse the original
Is there an easier way to get the battery out without a heat pad? Can I use a heat pad made for humans or just a normal hair dryer?
Hair dryer to the screen for a bit will do wonders to heat the battery adhesive, never heat the battery directly. If you can get some isopropyl alcohol it works wonders too!
Not now matter how many times I watch this (and others) I cant figure out how to get the back panel off, there simply seems to be no way to slip the pry tool between the seam to get the back panel off. I'm fully lost at this point, is there glue or something holding it down? it looks just clips but no mater how much I try I cant manage to get any leverage into it.
It's definitely very tight at first, it's easiest to slip in right next to the SIM tray. Thankfully the panel is plastic so you can use some serious force, and since the frame is right there you shouldn't be able to go "too far" in.

Recently followed this step by step and wow this is so much more involved than most iPhone screen replacements.
The one challenge I had - which when I was taking the part out the top metal cover disconnected. (Talking about the piece at the top that doesn’t seem to connect to anything but it allows you to listen up to your ear and not on speaker.)
So - when I took that piece out the metal plate on top disconnected and I think the teeth in the connector maybe didn’t sync up? Idk what do you guys think?
The “ear piece” component is what I’m referring to. Luckily my friend has the same exact phone so maybe I’ll steal that piece out in case I damaged it taking it out.
Hmm, so the earspeaker relies on pressure connection, there are two small gold teeth on the main board that make contact with the gold pads on the right of the earspeaker. Do you mean that these pieces broke? Or the silver metal plate that is under the earspeaker itself? That part shouldn't be necessary, but it without it those gold pins may not touch the speaker and would keep it from working.
Unless you mean the earspeaker itself came apart, at which point it would be best to replace that part.
@Taptic Digital I have same problem, I tried to push the board down to make sure about its making good contact, but still not hearing anything, I'm thinking to replace that part but it's seems fine no damage on it...
My kit didn't come with any glue or double-sided tape. Which kinds of glue would be good or bad glue? Super glue? Hot glue?
Definitely no superglue or hot glue. Use a silicone based like B7000 or a cold press glue. Tesa double sided tape is my preferred adhesive

Well, almost in luck - everything works except the speaker ... I did not glue it in, I'm guessing the contact points are either not aligned or not pressing together enough to connect.
Super common to see those gold contact springs on the board get smushed and stop springing. You can use tweezers to tug on them and spring them back out a bit.
On Friday, I followed this guide, and I fixed the screen. Later, I found the 3.5mm jack no longer accepts a cable. Also, five days later, the USB port stopped charging. Any suggestions on what went wrong? Would a loose ribbon cause the charging problem? And what did I do wrong with the 3.5mm jack?
Honestly I'm betting the two are related. Because the headphone jack is thru-hole soldered it's nearly indestructible, so it sounds more like a loose ribbon or bent connector. If you disconnect that ribbon from the charging board, check it for missing or bent pins. They should all be super straight and evenly spaced. Make sure it clicks all the way in, you should feel a nice *thunk* as it latches in. A loose ribbon would cause charging, headphone, and microphone issues.
@@TapticDigital I fixed the USB charging by attaching the ribbon, which was not damaged. It may have fallen off because the vibration motor (which is right next to the ribbon connection) was vibrating heavily because it was not glued down, so I glued it down. For the 3.5mm jack, I did a semi-haphazard surgery with a screwdriver, and now jack fits in the socket. All better again. Thank you.

Hi, i dropped my phone a couple days ago and the screen is pretty messed up.theres a black section where the cracks are and the top half of the screen also appears on the bottom half and there's random lines. Touch screen and the phone itself is fine. I've been using it as a Hotspot for my spare phone and it's been great. Would getting the replacement part fix that problem or would I need a different part? Thank you so much!

What can I use to heat up the phone for battery removal, besides a heating pad?
A heatgun on the front of the phone should soften it. Or just copious amounts of alcohol.

That could be a sign of loose connection or damaged LCD unfortunately

Yep it sure will, you'll just use a pass code or pattern instead if you want security!
I changed the screen to my A13 and it works perfectly... Until i out the case back on then it juddt refuses to charge and turn on, i take off the bacn again and it starts charging and turns on perfectly idk what to do
Something is getting pinched when the back goes on, it's just trial and error to see what. Try putting the back on slowly, one part at time and watch for when it stops
Anyone have advice if I don't have alcohol or a heat mat?
Place the phone on something that gets warm but not hot, otherwise try to find general use rubbing alcohol, most drug stores carry it for cleaning wounds or in first aid kits.

What gloves do you use? They look like a quality tool to have.
Gloves are my favorite tool, I never take them off. They are my one true skin. That said, I've use Gloveworks HD for a few years and they are the best I've found. Still occasionally rip between the index and thumb, but overall have held up very well against tears and heat. Plus customers never tell me their phone had gone in the toilet until it's in my hands, so gloves are essential.

It will take quite a lot of effort to remove without heat, you can always use a heat gun or hair dryer on the front of the screen to heat it up

Usually the model number will be different, this phone is picky about which display you use because Samsung makes about four different versions.

I usually use as thin as possible, and stick to 2mm or 3mm in most cases

You may have some damage to the Sim tray, the main ribbon, or the charging port. Best to open it back up and inspect for any rips, tears, kinks, or bent pins
@@TapticDigital everything except the sim really. i tried different sim tray but still not worked. the sim does work in different phones.
what if the screen isn't turning on?
Could be a defective screen, or the ribbon isn’t fully seated/could be damaged

My phone is a colored phone. Blue? Green? I dont know. Do they have a frame with that color?
On this model it doesn't matter, the display and frame of the phone are all the same color, it's just the back panel that comes in different colors.

Does it matter if the frame comes with it? What happens if it doesn't. I kinda don't trust that site you linked.
Injured Gadgets is pretty reputable, a lot of franchise repair shops like CPR or UBreakIFix use them for parts. But you can definitely find it elsewhere! I recommend it with a frame, if you get one without a frame you'll need to heat the broken display and cut it out from the frame. Then you'll need a thin, silicone based glue to adhere the new screen to the frame (and some chip clips to hold it together while it dries).

@@MinutemenMilitia76 I think the benefit of repair would be having all of your data, but it depends on how important that is to you. But Samsung A series are pretty cheap to replace.

You forgot to mention that the battery would begin burning and explode!!!
Only if you stab it, violently. I've actually taken batteries outside and punctured them with knives only to be disappointed at the lack of explosion.
