Amazing!!!! You re lucky having video! This Pokémon first movie made in 1998 in Japan. They sent it to America in 1999 BUT Pokémon Johto started in fall 1999 in Japan. We behind 😓
PokeMania was running wild! I turned 6 in '99 and was obsessed with Pokemon as nearly every other kid my age was. So many fond memories seeing the first 3 films in theatres, endless hours watching the television series, and, of course, the Game Boy games. Nice seeing Veronica Taylor pop up in this, too! Met her in 2016, and she couldn't have been a nicer person.
Pokémon: The First Movie is 25 years old! Opened on my sister Cara’s birthday we were both 9 years old This is still my favorite Pokémon movie ever The popular Japanese phenomenon made its way to America in 1998 and was booming with popularity I still think the movie works thanks to its cinematic animation, a darker tone setting itself apart from the show, an unforgettable score by Ralph Schuckett, some funny lines, and a good profound lesson saying how fighting is bad, nothing can come from it but pain There's also some morals about seeing how the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant, it's what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are, all creatures whether born or created should be treated equally, all share the same air, the same sky, the same earth Although it does come off as ironic with a franchise that’s successful because of its characters fighting in the first place But there is a subtle difference in say a boxing match vs a battle to the death, there's a limit and a time to pull back before going too far The real relationship between Pokémon and humans is not of servitude but of mutual understanding Some of the performers are a bit stilted and the original cut had a solid chunk of Mewtwo's backstory edited out Yet it still brought across themes of identity, friendship, and compassion over violence Sad to say critics were not impressed when it came out then again it is strictly for fans And it's one of those adaptations that doesn't get every non fan caught up on the lore There's lots of inside references for fans, the theme song getting a remix, and Team Rocket's humor adds some levity The movie has one of the best soundtracks ever holding a special place in my heart with many pop artists and bands like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, M2M, 98 Degrees, and Vitamin C Mewtwo makes for a worthy villain with a commanding presence, he's a being filled with isolation and anger challenging humanity willing to prove himself superior almost to the point of having a Malcolm X parallel I actually didn't expect the film to have an emotional response with the filmmakers daring to kill off its main lead, brought some tears to my eyes I won't lie Plus the fact that they mention a legend of tears bringing fallen ones back in Pokémon mythology comes back into play later was bold even almost Biblical Unity, compassion, tolerance, peace, and self discovery are what makes this movie stand out being a nostalgic milestone since its release for all Pokémon fans Making $85 million its success lead to several more films even a direct-to-video sequel and a CGI version on Netflix The rest of the franchise has held on for 3 decades and that says a lot about a Japanese phenomenon having that much staying power
I've talked with some of the gen z peeps at work about Pokemon and they never can fathom how big it was between 1998-2003ish. Not even Fortnite or Roblox compares.
It was right before internet culture would become huge and probably the biggest IP that had multiple forms of media that all tied together. You could watch the show, play the game, trade the cards or play the card game, trade in the game, get toys, get exclusive merch at Burger King, discuss rumors and once schools banned it became even cooler. The movie coming out was peak, many religions attacked it which again made it cooler, conventions and just being such a huge social dynamic based IP. I don’t think we’ve had or will have anything like it again. As big as Minecraft was, or even video games, Roblox or Fortnite…if you were old enough between 1998/2000 it was the biggest thing and was everywhere. Bring right before internet and social media meant you engaged in person with all of the media too, it was so popular i don’t even recall my first exposure to it I just know by the end of 98 I was hooked, we all had the game, watched the show, spread rumors, traded the cards and begged our parents to go to Burger King for the toys and waited eagerly for the movie. Even watching South Park another IP that was considered ‘bad’ lampoon it captured it, it was in the cultural zeitgeist for kids in a way I don’t think we had before or since
@@BrianAwesome All I'm saying is that when you really think about it, while DBZ was somewhat popular, I think the reason why it didn't have a ton of reach was because it was mostly only available on cable tv in the 90s. Compare that to Pokemon that actually aired and played on KidsWB which was not cable plus the success of the handheld games, Pokemon just had wider range appeal.
@@funkylion90s Oh without a doubt, I LOVED seeing those KidsWB bumpers with Pokemon in them. Seeing Ash go up against Yugi or the Animaniacs commenting on Pikachu, it was great stuff

Couldn’t agree more. There was an aura in the late 90’s being so young when pokemania hit, add in the beginning of what I’d say is the technology boom. All we had to worry about was enjoying childhood. Pokémon made unforgettable memories for me.

I was so pumped for Pokémon: The First Movie as a kid. And me and my sister thought it was the greatest thing ever. And we probably dragged our parents to the theater several more times to see it, until Toy Story 2 came out. And I think this movie is still pretty dang good. And Mewtwo stole the show.

The interviewer is asking a very vague question.. "What is Pokemon?". It's hard for the kids and even the adults to boil it down... It could be so many things For us at the time it was just cool looking creatures that we could catch and keep to ourselves.. It was like they were my own pets! that I could go on a adventure with.o boil it down
I'm sure the first girl didn't care and was and analytical or something but part of me knew she knew what was going on but you can't geek out too hard on national tv and go into the types but whoops long on sentence. She basically would have been my mom buying all packs for us and forcing us to keep specifically the holographics in sleeves. I wanted to take them to my friends for the longest time but this last June she passed away. She would be fascinated with the process of pokemon go and that a pokemon could be in your house. She took my to the first pokemon movie and that is when my consciousness first turned on. My mom and dad telling me it's a longer episode and I mind you I've watched the first bit but here. Right here these little dudes are me (not literally but that implored) and on top of that there was a gift shop right next to the theatre. I got a kick-ass charmander plushie. As a 30 yo male I was youn enough to see this movie and see ash win a league. I'm not a religious man but my mother was a religious woman and I was raised Catholic so even if I don't believe in it now if anyone is religious I'd take a prayer. It would piss my mom off because she would want you to take a shot of your nearest mid price rye but I'm still praying for her off my 26 of rye 🙏
For what ever reason adults loved to be confused about pokemon. I've never seen a cartoon be so confusing to adults in my life. This was of course further validatited further in this video as you can see. When the reporter kept askeing to explain pokemon to him , he kept having this smug condescending tone. This was typical and every parent I guess couldn't watch enough to realize whats going on . Its definitely the cool to not know what it's about cartoon all time , good way to see if someone was a sheep parrot. Of course there was the whole pokemAn thing..
I mean for people who didn’t grow up with it and don’t really give a shit to learn about it. It is confusing and even then if they do try to learn about it chances are they’re not gonna be invested to really know outside of a basic understanding.
Lmao, kids pulling out Charizards and fighting over them and just ripping on them and pulling out all the OG holos worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from their little containers and pouches while the parents stand there oblivious to what's even going on...
How the heck are these kids already got so hooked on Pokémon so much? The franchise just barely came to America ONE year before this movie was released.
As someone who was a kid during this time, it had a TON of marketing. A lot of kids back then had a Gameboy with the games, the cards were basically playground currency, and the show was usually airing reruns every morning before school started
What Avarazael said. I was around 9/10 at this time and was also heavily into Pokemon. It was because the marketing was everywhere! Posters in stores, the plushes, the fast food toys you could get in the kids meals, the video games (and seeing your classmates at school playing Pokemon Red or Blue - and later Yellow - at recess), the Pokemon cards, the anime which was almost done with the Indigo League, etc. It was everywhere and you couldn't escape it even if you tried lol.
Because Pokemon was everywhere Foods, Billboards, commercials, The anime on Kids WB. It was interesting. Kinda cool to look back on too. I was 9 or so at this time, I dont remember a whole lot now, But stuff like this brings back that feeling I do remember having
when they asked those two adults to explain pokemon, and they got, " you gotta catch them all", and " "it's rock paper scissors on a more elaborate scale" they could have left!🤣
Lol he explained it, his kids, like most kids at the time, love Pokemon. They're not with him at that moment because he's freakin Rob Lowe and people are going to borderline harass him for pictures and interviews, he knows it's expected of him to oblige them so he's doing it. His kids are probably waiting for them to get done so they can see the movie without them being apart of the focus and the bother. You can see them trying to coax promotional material out of really small children and they don't know how to deal with it and it's kinda messed up.
When Pokemon the First Movie came out my grandpa took me to see it and there were four different pokemon card promos you could get, getting 1 card per ticket. @@RolandKoller90Pokémon The First Movie came out in the US theaters in the United States about 25 years ago since it first appeared back in 1999 when the Pokémon franchise became a juggernaut during the anime boom period.
I want to go back in time and see this.
Happy 25th Anniversary
Pokémon The First Movie
1999-2024
🥳🎊🎉🎊🎉🎊🎉
I’m a Pokemon fan for life but man no time was better than this time right here. Grew up alongside Pokémon and it’ll forever be my favorite thing in the world.
I'm crying! I remember this movie being huge! I was 8.
I want to hug that CUTE Pikachu!
One my the best memories was watching this during Christmas of 99. I was 5 but remember it like yesterday.
Pokémon was 1 Gen in Dec 1999 but there was 2 Gen as johto in Japan 1999…
So cool. Pre 9/11 when things were popping off. And the Sopranos, Seinfeld, SNL was at peak. Man...Linkin park and nu metal starting up. Miss this. Miss playing my genesis and ff7 on an actual TV. Had my CD Player...pokemon silver i got on my game boy the next year!
The best times ever 💪🏼 wish we could go back.
I still remember when my mom took me and my brother to watch Pokémon The First Movie first day and getting Pikachu, Mewtwo and Dragonite promo cards. I cried in the movie. Great times. I was 11 years old.
I also remember Burger King promoting it as well.
There are now 23 movies. Pokemon is still going strong!
There are no more Pokemon movies.
I was 6 in 1999 i remember watching this movie back in then me & my older sister with Pokemon movie trailer back then song vocals seeing Pokemon Pokemon i miss living 90s
I was born 95 and my cousin older by 5 years, got me into Pokémon in the year 2000. Although I was introduced a year after the peak. It was still very popular and by that time the Pokémon crazy was starting to die down so all this Pokémon merchandise was filling the overstock shelves at that point so things were still expensive but not crazy expensive
Pokémon is my favorite anime series I grew up watching every season and all the movies and this year I finally got to meet my heroes Veronica Taylor the voice of Ash Ketchum Rachel Lillis the voice of both Misty and Jessie and Eric Stuart the voice of both Brock and James at the MCM comic con in London for the 25th anniversary of the first movie that was so amazing and a dream come true and I will forever cherish the memories of my experience thanks for sharing this amazing video of my favorite anime Pokémon I choose you now and forever 👍❤️
Rachael Lillis passed away, even Eric Stuart should be next.
I was 14 years old back then , when pokemon was every where
I always wanted to see the pokemon first movie world premiere! Thanks dude! 🤓😄😃😀😍😎 POKEMON RULE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I miss this I grew up on Pokemon and I’m now 36years old i might watch the movie twonight because I own the Pokemon movie 2000s I was a big fan of Pokemon and me and my brother played the games and my dad wold take us to the movies I seen Pokemon 1/2/3 Pokemon movies the Pokemon 2000s is my favorite and we did battle on Pokemon blue/red this makes me sad becuse my dad and brother are both dead we seen em all but my dad died from cancer and my brother had his heart exploded at age 17 so this gets me emotional I miss em both and wish I can go back in time sand make em live we seen the movies on release day at the movies
Opened on my sister Cara’s birthday we were both 9 years old
This is still my favorite Pokémon movie ever
The popular Japanese phenomenon made its way to America in 1998 and was booming with popularity
I still think the movie works thanks to its cinematic animation, a darker tone setting itself apart from the show, an unforgettable score by Ralph Schuckett, some funny lines, and a good profound lesson saying how fighting is bad, nothing can come from it but pain
There's also some morals about seeing how the circumstances of one's birth are irrelevant, it's what you do with the gift of life that determines who you are, all creatures whether born or created should be treated equally, all share the same air, the same sky, the same earth
Although it does come off as ironic with a franchise that’s successful because of its characters fighting in the first place
But there is a subtle difference in say a boxing match vs a battle to the death, there's a limit and a time to pull back before going too far
The real relationship between Pokémon and humans is not of servitude but of mutual understanding
Some of the performers are a bit stilted and the original cut had a solid chunk of Mewtwo's backstory edited out
Yet it still brought across themes of identity, friendship, and compassion over violence
Sad to say critics were not impressed when it came out then again it is strictly for fans
And it's one of those adaptations that doesn't get every non fan caught up on the lore
There's lots of inside references for fans, the theme song getting a remix, and Team Rocket's humor adds some levity
The movie has one of the best soundtracks ever holding a special place in my heart with many pop artists and bands like Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears, M2M, 98 Degrees, and Vitamin C
Mewtwo makes for a worthy villain with a commanding presence, he's a being filled with isolation and anger challenging humanity willing to prove himself superior almost to the point of having a Malcolm X parallel
I actually didn't expect the film to have an emotional response with the filmmakers daring to kill off its main lead, brought some tears to my eyes I won't lie
Plus the fact that they mention a legend of tears bringing fallen ones back in Pokémon mythology comes back into play later was bold even almost Biblical
Unity, compassion, tolerance, peace, and self discovery are what makes this movie stand out being a nostalgic milestone since its release for all Pokémon fans
Making $85 million its success lead to several more films even a direct-to-video sequel and a CGI version on Netflix
The rest of the franchise has held on for 3 decades and that says a lot about a Japanese phenomenon having that much staying power
Those two Charizard card go for 1 million for both now. If the guy still has them in good condition. He's a millionaire
I've talked with some of the gen z peeps at work about Pokemon and they never can fathom how big it was between 1998-2003ish. Not even Fortnite or Roblox compares.
Exactly, nothing will ever come close. It was released in the world at the perfect time in history.
Even watching South Park another IP that was considered ‘bad’ lampoon it captured it, it was in the cultural zeitgeist for kids in a way I don’t think we had before or since
This was really like the first time Japanese anime was a major hit in the United states of America.
Yeah. I mean Dragon Ball also blew up in America but I don't think it was on the magnitude that Pokemon did.
@@decadentgamer3108 I agree with you more than I disagree with you 🤔
@@BrianAwesome All I'm saying is that when you really think about it, while DBZ was somewhat popular, I think the reason why it didn't have a ton of reach was because it was mostly only available on cable tv in the 90s. Compare that to Pokemon that actually aired and played on KidsWB which was not cable plus the success of the handheld games, Pokemon just had wider range appeal.
@@decadentgamer3108
Don't forget the fact the Pokemon was treated like a member of the family in KidsWB.
The marketing for that show was INSANE
@@funkylion90s Oh without a doubt, I LOVED seeing those KidsWB bumpers with Pokemon in them. Seeing Ash go up against Yugi or the Animaniacs commenting on Pikachu, it was great stuff
By the way, just Subscribed to you as a thank you for uploading this nostalgic Video.
The 90s were such an amazing time.
That little kid with the 2 charizards! If they were properly stored in hard cases he’d have some good money right now lol
While I hope he does still have them, they are worth maybe 200-350 depending on condition.
The dub is radically different from the original Japanese version.
Any chance you have more pokemon related footage from the late 90s and early 2000s? I can only relive my own experience of pokemania with my memories, but memories get hazy after a while... Your footage is the closest I've felt to what i remember seeing and doing back then. Would love to see more.
Couldn’t agree more. There was an aura in the late 90’s being so young when pokemania hit, add in the beginning of what I’d say is the technology boom. All we had to worry about was enjoying childhood. Pokémon made unforgettable memories for me.
I was age 12 when Pokemon the movie 2000s came out in the summer time my birthday was on 7/14/1987 my brother and me and my dad taked us to the movies that was 30minutes away I remember getting mixed feelings but we got there early befor people showed up I think I left my gameboy in the movies but we got the Pokemon mew card my brother said I’m only here because my older brother wanted to see Pokemon but he was born in6/14/1989 and I was born in 7/14/1987 we both was big intwo Pokemon my dad taked us on the day it came out in the movies we got pop corn and candy and drinks then we went and pick the sets where we was going to watch it we got there 17minutes early we watched the big screen watching the ads and when the lights startin goin down the movie started we both seen Pokemon movie 1/2/3 in the movies the same day it got released I would seek my gameboy in the movies or left it in the car in the back it was emotional I laughed and cryed when ash got turn intwo stone I had mix feelings I was 12years old when Pokemon the movie 2000s came out but think god u can buy the movies off Amazon or iTunes on the iPod touch and iPhone but Pokemon the movie 2000s was my favorite r.i.p dad and brother I miss you both and yes I did cry when ash got turn intwo stone because the Pokemon was vsin the Pokemon clones and mewtwo and mew I wish I can bring you both back to life you both was a big part of my life and I thank you both for lovein me and helping me out over the years r.i.p both of you I will see you both in heaven
Definitely, if I got a Time Machine. This premiere would be the first place I would travel to.
@@tazinboor3913 And we did drag them to see the next two Pokémon movies. And the third one is still my favorite film in the trilogy.
@@hiattgrey9161 Ok.
@@hiattgrey9161 I’m not a Pokémon fan and I don’t watch the show like many big Pokémon TH-camrs like Lumiose Trainer Zac, and I’ve been out of a Pokémon phase since the beginning of this year’s summer. But I do like think of characters from Pokémon from time to time. And me and my friend do a thing called ‘Bad Movie Monday’ where we watch a movie that a website or some people on the internet consider not good. And we watched Pokémon : The First Movie at the end of January this year, and we both enjoyed it! I just find researching the movie and other parts of the franchise to be very cutesy and wholesome.
8:45 this with a ultra rare game boy light pokemon here !!!
Today is the *2* year anniversary of when "Pokemon: The First Movie Premiere from 1999" was uploaded! Since I was born in 1998, I didn't get to really experience "Pokemon: The First Movie" for myself until the remastered version premiered on Cartoon Network on January 4, 2014. I was 15 but that didn't stop me from tearing up when Ash died... for the second time! I'm pretty sure that the episode where he and Pikachu became ghosts aired before "Pokemon: The First Movie" even premiered. 🤓➡️😅
Cartoon Network had premiered Sinnoh, Unova and Kalos.
This Movie is still Ranked #1 to this day, no other Pokemon Movie has surpassed it
But the Question is Why?
Duh.. it's the original pokemon movie. .
@@pryingopenmythirdeye1830the box office yes but if I’m gonna be honest, the last five, Pokémon movies are better in terms of storytelling and being actual films even non-Pokémon fans, would enjoy those kids that we can’t say the same for the original five films but regardless, I still like them
My Older Brother was obsessed with Pokémon back then. Don’t know if he saw the movie though.

Yeah it's crazy how 17 years old teens back in the 90s still looked like their age, natural, no makeup, no designer brands just teens looking their age
yeah I was born in 1987 in the summer so basically after my birthday because it’s on the 14 the Pokemon movies came out 6days after my birthday but sadly I don’t own my old gameboy or Pokemon games I think I left it at the movies or in the car basically I still play the games on Nintendo switch but Pokemon back then was everywhere and I was basically addicted to it but the movies getting there early like 15minutes before the movie start I’m now going to be 36 this year and yes it will hold a special place in my heart I was big intwo Pokémon I don’t watch the tv show anymore but I still own Pokemon2000 on digital it’s on iTunes and Amazon and TH-cam and firestick men I remember it but sadly I got mixed feelings in the movies watching it I wish my brother was still alive we both battled each one we both was addicted two it I feel old and I’m startin two get while heir so yes I get emotional when I listen two the music i ohmost cryed a few hrs ago listening two the old Pokemon cd I miss being a kid
The interviewer is asking a very vague question.. "What is Pokemon?". It's hard for the kids and even the adults to boil it down... It could be so many things For us at the time it was just cool looking creatures that we could catch and keep to ourselves.. It was like they were my own pets! that I could go on a adventure with.o boil it down
If I had taken good care of the rare cards from that time, I would have had a million dollar asset by now.
Had the choice to go see Stuart Little or Pokémon in 1999 when I was 5 years old. Easy pick!
Bro wore a Digimon shirt to a Pokemon movie lol 7:19
I wonder how the Movie would’ve been if we replaced the original series crew with the xy crew?
a yellow edition signed by pika would be so awesome!
21:20 this is where it was filmed in Chinese theaters.
Remember kids… it was Gale that did it.
Also… KABUTLETOPS
She's still around and has a website, seems like she did know what she was doing
SCOOTER WARD FROM COLD IS AT 27:35!!!
That’s CRAZY.
Rob Lowe is well on his way to working until he’s 75 like he said.
what was stronger: pokemania or hulkamania?
This is trippy af
"Actormon" lol love how non-Pokemon fans think they all end in -mon.
Lol yeah, this isn’t Digimon. Even though I love digimon too, it dealt with more serious topics; I loved it for that :)
Where’d you find this?
The first lady was a walking pamphlet with no answers of her own
Lmao, kids pulling out Charizards and fighting over them and just ripping on them and pulling out all the OG holos worth hundreds of thousands of dollars from their little containers and pouches while the parents stand there oblivious to what's even going on...
Worth some money, if they still have the cards and if they're still in really good condition.
The fox kids tv show
What Avarazael said.
Because Pokemon was everywhere
Foods, Billboards, commercials, The anime on Kids WB.
It was interesting. Kinda cool to look back on too. I was 9 or so at this time, I dont remember a whole lot now, But stuff like this brings back that feeling I do remember having
@cyber, ,Especially when some didn't see it until it officially debuted on Kids' WB in 1999.

Wtf was Rob Lowe doing their?? 😂😂😂
