Great video! I didn't expect you to cut the shoe open to remove the last. And turning inside out also was unexpected. It is a very elegant and simple looking shoe, but more is going on inside than meets the eye. I didn't understand the footage in which the yarn was handled. Can anyone comment on those steps?
Hi - it is a process apparently still in use today... The yarn is thinned and frayed by undoing the twist and pulling out fibres. Then a boar bristle is similarly spit and frayed - one end of the bristle already has a natural tendency for this. Then the two frayed ends are joined as shown in the video. The final part which IS in the video but might be overlooked is to bend the tip of the boar bristle back and sew it through the yarn in a completion of the joining process. Repeat with the other end of the yarn. This makes a much thinner "needle" than a metal needle which has an eye and carries two yarn thicknesses with it. the boar bristle needle and yarn aren't vigorously joined thus must not be PULLED through the stitch holes but rather be PUSHED. Learned this myself today in a video I'll try to post a link to... th-cam.com/video/NPC_HSe71K4/w-d-xo.html
Amazing work! How thick is the upper (vamp) leather that allows the tunnel stitching without tearing? I'd love to try this, but a not sure what thickness of leather to purchase.
This is about 1- 1,5 mm, it is more about the quality of the leather than the actual thickness. A thick leather can be very hard also to make the tunnel stitches in.
Those are some BEAUTIFUL late medieval shoes. Looking to somehow make some for myself... I'm sick of these high heel shoes, just need some simple leather shoes.
Great looking shoe. I watch videos to learn, but your didn't teach me anything. So explanation on your procedure would have been greatly appreciated and make your video helpful.

Very nice. Love the lacing method. How long would the bottoms hold up in use? Is there evidence of the bottoms being repaired or replaced?
