- The eastern Gawler Craton and the Mount Isa Province are two of Australia’s most economically endowed mineral provinces, characterised by the formation of large iron-oxide copper gold (IOCG) deposits and a series of smaller Cu, Au and base metal deposits and prospects in the early Mesoproterozoic. While it is tempting to correlate these provinces, there are important differences in the timing and style of mineralisation. The poorly exposed northern Gawler Craton sits at the interface between these regions, and provides a connection between the eastern Gawler Craton and Mount Isa. Recent work from the northern Gawler Craton has identified sporadic episodes of metamorphism, magmatism, alteration and minor mineralisation between c. 1530-1450 Ma. Importantly, this new data shows that the tectonic evolution of the Gawler Craton continues past c. 1600-1550 Ma, previously thought to be the final major event. These new ages can be used to tie the northern Gawler Craton to the Mount Isa Province.
"Accidental Geologist"
Yes! this term is perfectly applicable for some of us.
Some of us wanted to be a geologist from the age of ~~10 or so. Complex business indeed.
