I love this podcast because it introduces me to new books and authors that are not quite common in booktube or bookstagram. Keep it up! And very happy new year for both of you 🎉

Solenoid was my favorite read of '23. Tell Andy I'm 300 pages into Gravity's Rainbow. You guys are the best! Read Denis Johnson's Tree of Smoke.

2:24:11 Thanks for answering my question! I saw the spreadsheet linked in your bio with each country you've read so far. I think it's a fantastic long-term project to broaden your horizons. Hope you both have a great 2024! 😊

We've got something better than a spreadsheet coming soon 🙂

You´ve mentioned you want to put out the best content in the book space. If you haven´t checked him out yet (although you probably have)... There´s a TH-camr called Benjamin McEvoy and he is undoubtedly the best content creator in the books space. It´s not even close. He rarely uploads on TH-cam but his bookclub on Patreon is easily the richest oasis for serious readers. He also has a podcast (Hardcore Literature). He mostly talks about classic literature. Shakespeare, Milton, Joyce, Proust etc. There is a huge amount of poetry, drama and philosophy that could be interesting for you to explore. Just wanted to mention him and his content if you´re looking for new ways to improve and dive much deeper into literature :)

First of all, I don't mention that until nearly the end of this episode, so thank you for watching our whole show!
Secondly, yes, Benjamin is fantastic! Definitely a source of inspiration, and I think he is proof that the actual content itself, the discussion, is the most important thing, as his videos are very straightforward in terms of production.
I will say he and I have a different approach, which is probably quite obvious, as I try to include some visual storytelling in everything (podcast excluded) like my video on this channel about 100 years of solitude.
I'll have to look into Ben's Patreon, you're the second person to mention it to me this week.

@@Lifeonbooks Yeah, I love your style and your work so keep going!! What´s so cool about Ben is that he basically invests all of his time in deep-reading and researching the books themselves and everything around them like author, time period, context, critical reception etc. And he synthesizes all of it into 3-6 lectures per book, an hour each. Not to mention the community in his book club is the best. All of them are just purely positive, very intelligent and serious about studying (challenging) books. Definitely check it out!!

Ben's book club has changed my life! Your approach is cool too but I want to read mainly classics...that have stood the test of time.

I'm so pleased to see our TROLL on this list! Thanks for including small press work in your reading - I'd never thought to position it next to The Tunnel, a perfect book.

It was an honor to be sent a copy and have the chance to be an early reader!

Aura by Carlos Fuentes and Box Man by Kobo Abe are two books that come to mind which were written in second person.

Just finished Catch -22. It could be a perfect book. Hilarious, laugh out loud, not a single dull chapter. Along with Slaughterhouse 5, it is the peak of Anti -war commentary.

And unsurprisingly, Heller and Vonnegut were great friends.

Ever read Hernan Diaz? Trust won the Pulitzer in 2022 but In the Distance is my favorite, and shorter at an economical 250 pages.
It’s a twist on a western. Young Swedish boy gets on the wrong boat and accidentally ends up in California during the gold rush, while his older brother ends up in New York. He begins working his way East to find his brother. He knows no English but starts to learn as the novel progresses. Meets a lot of interesting characters and finds himself in a lot of interesting situations…don’t want to spoil it!
