- Went to Fullarton River in Queensland, Australia a few years ago to collect some Garnets. Coming back the 2nd time, I now know better to keep the ones I did not bother with in the previous trip. The result is 3 liters more Garnets to process. Some will be faceted by myself and some sent overseas, but most of them will be tumbled to use in different applications. Processing the Garnet is time consuming, but the result is well worth the effort in the end.

Hi Patience, I'm in the process of tumbling some of these and it'll take 8 weeks before they finish. I'll have some available for sale and will make a video to notify my subscribers. I'm glad I'm able to introduce you to the wonders of gems. :-) Wal prefers chasing gold than gems but on our last trip for gold, he suggested we swing by Fullarton River to chase these garnets. He just loves the colours.

Thanks for the info. I mined garnets at a mine close to me. They are beautiful crystallized garnets of all sizes. Not sure how to process but they are beautiful.

It's funny, if I didn't know better, I would've thought you had 2 buckets of what looks like lightly sweetened raisins at 2:18. Lol. I live in the world famous gemstone Mecca of Delaware(just kidding). You are lucky to be able to find these places where you can find gems without being crowded with people all around you.

This afternoon I found a 60-70lb cluster of them in a mica schist. There is at least 100 visible on the outside of the host. I don't know how to access them besides a few I was able to pop out with my fingers, nor do I know how or if they are facetable

You're very lucky to be by a place where you can find all these lovely gems! I live in Pennsylvania and I'll be lucky to find a chipped quartz stone buried in some pebbles.

What chemicals or agents do you use to clean the dirt and iron off the stones? I have a couple pounds of garnets and I'm not sure how to properly clean them
Thanks for watching Jeanette. I remove the iron stains off the garnet by using a tumbler with silicon carbide grits to tumble and polish them. This allows me to sort out the clear stones ready for cutting/faceting. Cheers, Liz

I love watching these videos.. but I disagree about the tumbled, fractured garnets. You say they're ugly, and while I respect your opinion about it, I think they're beautiful. I do understand that they wouldn't make for good pieces (breaking apart and all that jazz), so I wouldn't use them in jewelry.. but I would keep them anyway. Their lines and imperfections are lovely.

I found an unusual piece of black shale and it looks like its just loaded with tiny garnets . I have no other clue what the material that holds the garnets might be .

The garnet sand is used for anti slip tape on steps maybe you could put it to good use somewhere around some slippery steps

I go out and around Roswell and Artesia New Mexico an pick up Pecos Valley Diamonds. They are very pretty but they cannot be tumbled because they turn to sand. One website selling them claim that the space aliens left them here which is nonsense. LOL They do make pretty jewelry by being wire wrapped especially with copper or gold wire. I really like your videos. When do you find time to even breathe?

My daughter is taking up a Geo course and more often they ( students) will go together somewhere like rivers to find some interesting stones to study. Wish we live near that area you fanned those stones so my daughter will have a good time finding stones to study.
Depending where you are, you'd be surprise to know that there are gemstones all over the world. It's just a matter of doing a bit of research to find out exactly what's there and where.

Hi Liz. I just fixed my smart phone spelling in the comment below. I leave watched this before but I like it so I'm watching it again.
Anyway, I had an idea of what you could do with the smaller garnets that are too small (chips) to wire wrap but are still beautiful. Why dont you wire up a small cage-like pendant for the chips to held in. I have seen this done. AND with your wiring skills, you couldn't go wrong.! I think trapped garnet chips in a cage would make a beautiful necklace, pendant, earrings or even charms for a bracelet. Just an idea for you to kick around. Betty ♥️👽♥️

Hello there. I am just wondering how the things work in Australia. Most anywhere you have to have a commercial claim staked out to extract minerals of any sort. But this video looks like you are just in a nature somewhere, not worrying about any of the rules...Or am I mis-interpretting the atmosphere? Thank you.

😳😭😭😭😭 you know the brown is iron and its a key to making star garnets .... A star garnet is not always see through.... I live in north idaho. 6 ray star garnets are here and India yet can be found all over. Your gems look great. Just breaking my heart as I watched you break them. Good to see you use them all tho.

If you have a fossicking licence you are limited on how much you are able to Fossick .But I notice that you take a LOT More than you are aloud ; on all of your videos
Please only make comments when you know exactly what you are talking about. We have been prospecting all over Australia for over 50 years and know all the regulations extremely well. We take less than what we are allowed to and give much of what we find to fellow prospectors who are down on their luck. Cheers, Liz
I would LOVE to facet some of those beauties. When I see somebody able to fill a few tubs of garnets of which at least 25% appear to be facet-worthy, I tend to wonder why they cost So Damn Much ? Certainly there doesn't appear to be any shortage of them there. I'd give just about anything I have to spend a day or two hunting for garnets and fossicking for sapphires and even topaz. But alas, I'm a poor man and crippled. So even if the opportunity was there, I'd be unable to do it or at least not for long.
On my last count.... Out of one kilo of garnet, I only found twenty one pieces of facetable grade or eye clean. I find that when cut, I will still lose a few that'll have inclusions. Thanks for watching and take care. Cheers, Liz
