    my father worked at the high speed test track back in the early 70s i have great memories of watching the sleds go down the track we lived there from 69 - 73

    Was there in the early 90s working on ACES II ARS program. Our shots were always exciting, but the best thing I saw while I was there was a night-time Mach 5 sled shot from the mid-range control bunker. Surreal. At the time, there was a crew from Sunstrand that was surveying the track for the certification to Mach 10. Good times...

    Brings back good memories. I was in Track Safety until 2010.

      I don't suppose that you'd remember what year/issue the story published in "Airman Magazine," written by 'Bailey' and photographed by 'Ken Wright' was?

    Such wholesome and patriotic music! My heart goes warm knowing that this wonderful test track was used to help develop the military weapons that keep us safe by blowing up up children in the Middle East. God bless that sled!

    I was controller, sled readiness, safety, and maybe one other position title that escapes me. I was there 1972-75. Looking forward to the next HSTT Anniversary celebration!!

    I've done a lot of filming at Holloman AFB over the years. It always lives up to its rather unusual self-description as "The Friendliest Place on Earth". The officers and enlisted personnel who've helped us out on our various productions are invariably first-rate and wonderful to work with. Congratulations on your promotion, Col. Stufft-Knight.

    Stationed at Holloman AFB from early '93 to '02 and was field crew for ACES II testing during that time period. Any night launch can be viewed from Thule Peak (if you have access onto base) or from the NMSU campus area in Alamogordo (if you don't). Calling Track Control may or may not yield up the date/time of a launch to watch, though.

    My niece, who I'm very proud of, is stationed at this Air Force base at present time. She is Col. Leslie Stufft- Knight is a great doctor who served in Afghanistan and make Col. this past spring. Good luck Leslie from your extremely proud Aunt. Go get um girl!

    Thanks for that, and for your work. (I don't know if we ever met in person but we've filmed many times at Holloman AFB and the HSST starting in early '97.)

    At 0:11 you'll see an old Federal Signal Model 3 or 5 warning siren in Civil Defense Yellow, witch is a rare color. These sirens aren't being made anymore, but there still are a few working ones in the US.

    And my first question is do we have hypersonic missile defense a simple yes or no would be nice.

    @orangelion03 Fantastic! We've been at the track many times over the years filming for one documentary or another, but always during the day. Our friends at the HHSTT have provided us with some great footage of night shots but I'd still love to see one in person. Thanks so much for sharing your story.

    This is the TRUE future of transportation. This track showed the evidence that rail based vehicles have no known upper speed limit.Linear propulsion is replacing friction as the power source and such tracks would be placed inside low pressure tubes with pressures similar to those at 30000m or so.Planes can never go above 850km/h.

    While I have to agree that the term 'better' is a bit subjective, SNORT did some terrific work and your allegiance is understandable. I'm a little biased towards Holloman because of the extraordinary work done there by John Paul Stapp, a tradition of excellence and innovation that, from what I've seen, continues to this day. Hey, we all have our heroes.

    • @MrTacolover2
      @MrTacolover2 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +broomsterm + the same speeds of reentry , 17,500 minimum , are attained on ascent with rocket capsule pointed forward. No heat shielding of any kind save the metal of the capsule itself, plus high silica glass window which miraculously , never ever even discolor .

      @@MrTacolover2 no not really they don't speed up to reentry speeds until they're well out of the atmosphere and pointing prograde they're out of the atmosphere before Mach 5 the foam tank wouldn't survive reentry speeds and we see that because it breaks up when it's released and pushed back down into the atmosphere from space

    anyone know how much a track like this cost to build?

  • @sciencehighway
    @sciencehighway  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thanks Dave. Would love to talk to you about your own experiences at the track one day.
    My wife and I have spent a lot of time in Alamogordo and out at the base over the past two decades, usually shooting one film or another. I couldn't agree more with your feelings about the people of Otero County and that magical land of theirs. We'd love to retire there ourselves one day.

    We should not be blasting on the media where are testing facilities are or holding yards or military bases we should not explain how a lot of our high-tech weapons work rather we should just show them doing what they do not how they function.

    So this modern high tech alloys can ignite at just over Mach 6 .... But the space shuttle, Apollo, Gemini, and even Mercury spacecraft withstand Mach 22 . Thanks for posting yet another nail in the coffin of " Space" travel

    • @Patrick94GSR
      @Patrick94GSR 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The alloys ignite at ground level air density, smart guy. Space vehicles orbiting at 17,000 MPH are in a vacuum. As the vehicle drops out of orbit, air density increases, speed decreases, and the ceramic heat shield tiles on the lower surface protect the vehicle from surface ignition.
      Come on, do you even science?

      Low pressure tube trains can go even faster but with electricity instead of fuel burning rockets. There is no more "space shuttle apollo gemini mercury" except in museums. An electric train currently in service can carry 1000 people at 300km/h and we go to awork every day on such trains. This is how it is.

    • @koc988
      @koc988 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't even know how to observe this level of stupid the tiles they put on the space shuttle aren't strong enough to be put on a track there like glass just how do you make leaps on logic that huge
      If you know anything about what you claimed to know you would realize that they need a good balance between heat management and strength and cost and steel is best
      They can't like a 10 mile track in inconel x or carbon carbon because they have to run stuff on it all of the super heat resistant stuff is ultra brittle compared to metals
