  • It took just ten years to build a wall fifteen feet high and wide enough to drive an articulated lorry along for 73 miles across some of the most inhospitable terrain in England.
The engineers and soldiers who achieved this remarkable feat 1,900 years ago did so with the most basic tools, no machinery except a basic surveying instrument for straight lines and right angles, saws, pickaxes, sickles, chains and ropes for moving heavy stones; spades for digging and mules for carrying materials .
But, unlike any other army of the time, the Roman legions included engineers, architects, surveyors, and masons.
Nearly 2,00 years after that remarkable feat, Hadrian’s Wall, is the most important monument of Roman Britain and the best-known frontier of the entire Roman Empire.
