I regret getting rid of my childhood Barbies. Now I'm 55 and I started collecting dolls a few years ago. I go thrifting and online trying to find my vintage Barbies I use to have.

Having 3 sisters, I grew up with many Barbies in the house - but most of them were passed down to my younger cousins. The only doll I was able to save was my original Malibu Francie and some of her clothes. In 1992 my husband gave me the Classique Benefit Ball Barbie for Christmas. That started my collection. Even though I've sold off a good deal of my 90s dolls, I've kept Benefit Ball. These days, I focus on Francie collecting, with a few 60s/70s Barbies also. I have all the reproduction and silkstone Francies, plus a good number of vintage Francie dolls. Still looking for a Busy Francie - that's one of the ones I used to have that I want to replace.

I love this specific doll so much! I have a story behind her too. I remember 6 year old me in 1996 coming home after school and seeing this Barbie sitting on the living room recliner wearing Flower Fun Barbie's dress. She was preowned but I didn't care, and not only that but my grandma said she saved her from someone's trash which made me love the doll even more. I remember taking her into the babathroom, wetting her hair and combing it until it was dry. I also had the purple variant with the lavender eyes that I found naked in granny's garage shortly after receiving this doll. I loved playing with them both together and I also remember calling the lavender eye one the purple eyed ballerina as a child 💜💜💜

Something similar happened to me when I was a kid with a barbie and the energy about it. I loved playing with one of my cousins barbie, the lights and lace one, ugh I was obsessed over her and I used to take care of her and brush her hair, years later when I was about 20 years old my aunt came to me and gave me the doll that I used to play with, I almost cried when she did that, the doll was quite complete, only missing her microphone and one of the lace pieces that goes with the boots!

I didn’t even exist in the 90s! I was born in 2005! It’s so incredible you’ve been collecting dolls this long Elvira! I only started collecting in 2012 and they were monster high. I’ve got a long road ahead of me to collect the extensive number of barbies you and mum have!

Honestly, I LOVED this video! It was so much fun listening to your story and how you started doll collecting! I can only imagine how fun you and your mom had doll hunting and making all of these memories, and then looking back at them.. it almost feels bittersweet. I'm so happy you got to experience this kind of happiness and having that memory of "the first doll", it must be so nostalgic. Hope you have more great memories in the future, and that you can keep being a barbie girl for life. 🤗❤

I grew up with Barbie in the 70's and early 80's and then started "collecting" in 1994 with Flapper Barbie because the hubby and I were having a roaring 20's wedding. It escalated quickly from there and it truly was the best time to be a collector.

Very sweet that you and your mom can share collecting together. My mom gave me her old Barbie and I started with the generic ones that came with a swimsuit. I actually had a blow up pool for my dolls. I would get these like off brand doll clothing packs and dress them. My very first real major doll was a stamping western doll i got for my 5th birthday.

It's nice that you were able to share collecting experiences with your mom. I used to clothes shop with my mom. However, collecting isn't all positive. As you said, it cost a lot of money over the years. People have to find their own balance, but I find so much doll content that is just "more, more, more", and very little that talks about "enough" and what deeper issues it might be distracting from.
In my mom's case with clothes shopping, she was in an unhappy marriage and had cancer that stymied her career and eventually killed her at 55. Now as an adult, I can see that going to the mall was escapism for her. It helped to a certain extent, but I think some of the money might have been better spent on counselling than closets of clothes she barely wore and that my dad was furious over.

It was Teen Sweetheart Skipper for me! I loved watching this video because it is so interesting finding out what "the doll" was for different people collecting. Teen Sweetheart Skipper was one of my first Skipper dolls and I remember the birthday I got her and I remember opening her and thinking she was so beautiful will all the little accessories she came with. I never got rid of any Barbies or Skippers from my childhood (they stayed on the top bookshelf in my childhood bedroom) and sometime in my 30's I discovered Ebay and how I could actually buy Teen Sweetheart Skipper still in her box and get that experience all over again! I have my original that I got from my 8th birthday and I have the first one I bought on Ebay that was the start of my actual collecting of dolls. Those two dolls are very special and now I've got tons of dolls and a wide variety. It just skyrocketed from there ;) Thank you for sharing your story! It's fun to see so many collectors stories in this comment area!

The doll that got me in to collecting was probably my Hearts For Hearts Girls Dell doll. I actually got her at my local Goodwill, the place where I got most of my dolls as a kid, and at first I thought she was an American Girl doll. That really got me into the AG community on line, which helped me realize when I was about 12 that dolls didn't have to be something that I had to grow out of.

Wow, you still have the first Barbie you collected. Must've been fun doll hunting with your mom when you were young. I don't consider myself being a collector as a kid but the first blonde Barbie I can remember getting was Barbie and the Rockers with the real dancing action, the wave 2 Barbie with the straight hair and silver pants. I also remember getting Tropical Miko from K-mart. My mom got one for my sister and one for me. As a collector I'd say that Harley Quinn Barbie started it for me, because I love costumed Harley and I could not resist that collab.

That's such a wholesome collecting story between you and your mother. ;u; My story starts with my toxic father throwing my favorite Barbie Movie dolls away because if he didn't get attention, he would toss anything taking it away from him. After my parents divorce I would buy the dolls again when I made money for the first time. The feeling of finding bucket list doll's and my childhood dolls heals past trauma's in a way and overall brings me happiness. I'm very lucky the people around me accept it and have no issue with it.

Mine started over a year and half now, ago…(you know what I mean). I alway knew I wanted to collect. But I just didn’t understand it. I had gotten some Barbie’s… and they just didn’t hit. I didn’t like them. Few months pass and I stumble on MH… had never heard of it b4. No MFing clue!! Well… “your gurl” is hooked. And I was initially bummed out… bc the line was discontinued! But they back!!! So these last drops have just been heaven for me ( but f the stress that comes with it). I’ve gotten every drop since beetle juice. And just soooo thrilled that I was able to get a sdcc Frankie for this year! I don’t know where I’m going in life… I’m 35. Life is hard, usually all the damn time. But I do know that these dolls make me beyond happy! Can’t wait to find them in store!

I got my own first dolls Christmas 1993. They were the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers Kimberly and Trini dolls. I had that AHA moment too. I remember opening them and I was hooked. Some months after that they disappeared I think my dad threw them out because I brought those dolls literally EVERYWHERE. I bought Kimberly and Trini dolls off eBay just so they could be in my life again because they mean so much to me.

I loved my Barbies growing up (I’m 34) but didn’t really “collect” until I was in my late 20s. I really enjoyed watching the show Toy Hunter which sparked an interest in me to go back and buy my favorite toys growing up - which was the Mattel Aladdin & Jasmine dolls. I found them on eBay but while searching I discovered the limited edition Disney designer dolls and fell in love with them. From there I branched out in to Monster High and Ever After High…and these days my focus is Rainbow High (I run the largest RH group on Facebook!)

I'm 38 and have none of my childhood dolls. My Mom was not a doll person and encouraged me to give up my dolls to my younger cousins. It wasn't until I had daughters of my own that I returned to dolls.
Probably the most memorable barbie for me was my Medieval Lady barbie (yeah I was told *keep that in its box; it'll gain value* yeah right lol). I definitely played with her. She had rooted eyelashes! (I still adore her and will likely buy her again one day....and she's not staying in the box then either!) I probably spent more time in the barbie section of FAO Schwartz than any other department. (tbh, I wish I had checked out the bigger fashion dolls a bit more)

Gorgeous💖... love it... I had some Barbies in 70's Australia & loved them, but as an adult collector I'm not into her because we never had brunette dolls & I wished for one... it was like her blonde hair was the "ideal". I had my blonde Velvet doll, which I still have & actually loved, but trust me, I've made up for it with every hair colour under the sun...cue.... Rainbow High...! 🤣❤

My collection story is a relatively peculiar one, seriously it is!
As a child, I always greatlya ppreciated details, and therefore took care of everything I owned to avoid destroying details. Since, I too, never go to that 'doll age limit' stage, I thought that it was strange that children never appreciated. their dolls. I knew why, yet I STILL wanted to not accept it.
It was later on in my childhood, when I was introduced to Monster High, that I entered my true doll era. Something felt right about these dolls; they had the flexibility, creation and detail that my mind needed. Me and my sibling were given a set of rare first wave dolls; at that point I knew tones.I possessed high doll knowledge. I suppose that that also got me into dolls. I liked the materials and effort that went into them. I can just remember looking at Draculaura, first wave, and thinking "this doll has no limits". She had no limits whatsoever; that doll went everywhere with me. Even when her limbs came apart, I treasured her closely. She is currently on my doll shelf, tape spotting her limbs. Ever after High dolls later came by; they satisfied my love of literature. Barbie was always the Disney that never came for me. The detail on the Barbie movie dolls was, and is, adequate:)
In essence, I always appreciated and accepted doll arts. I knew immediately, that that was something that needs to be pursued. More people would know of them, more people would find themselves, and more would aspire to find more!

I started collecting as a very small girl when my mother got me the first Barbie doll and I was actually born the exact same day Barbie came out on the market; so I consider myself a real Barbie ;) :) :) I don't know what it was about her, but I didn't want any other types of dolls until i was in my mid twenties, and then I started buying other types of dolls. I remember having the first Fashion Queen Barbie, and I had a Color Magic Barbie also. I don't have any of my original dolls because they all disappeared one day and no one knows what happened to them :(

I loved Barbies as a kid, and one of the earliest dolls I remember getting was the Barbie in Swan Lake doll, or one of the princess dolls based on the Barbie films. Barbies and Disney Princess dolls were a huge special interest for me as a kid. Then, when I was 11, I forced myself to hate Barbies and dolls in general temporarily because my peers in elementary school told me that Barbies were childish, and with my Aspergers, I wanted desperately to fit in.
What got me back into in dolls was getting a Mattel Elsa doll from Frozen in 2013 when I was depressed, and it helped me with my lonliness as well as becoming a significant comfort object for me during that time in my life. Then I got the Boo York, Boo York Nefera doll from Monster High because I loved her Egyptian theming, and I was curious about the popularity of that line. I feel like Monster High was the line that got me into doll collecting, and I loved the Be Yourself, Be Unique message the line promoted, as it helped me build confidence in myself, and accept my Aspergers and Neurological Differences for once. Currently, I am collecting Monster High when I can find them, Shadow High and Rainbow High, and doll collecting just makes me really happy for some reason. My current favorite dolls in my collection are probably the Storm Twins from SH, a custom 18" doll I made of Pirate Percy from the Candle Cove Creepypasta (another comfort character of mine), and Cleo and Nefera from MH. I also only buy dolls that I really like and that make me happy when I look at them, as I am not a completionist and don't feel the need to get every doll in a line or series of dolls. Overall, doll collecting has really helped me mentally, and I have been happier since I first started collecting. It also helped me look at dolls from a more artistic viewpoint, which I really appreciate.

So cute that tooth fairy 🧚‍♀️ Barbie started it my daughter gets toys & dolls when she loses a tooth. My mom was 8-9 in 1959 I don’t think she was big into Barbie or dolls though my grandparents had 4 kids plus they took in foster children I’d have to ask my mom if she remembers or had Barbie’s. Most of my Barbie’s in the 80s or 90s were passed down from older sister (born in 77 I was born in 82) and then sometimes I got some for birthday & Christmas I know my 7th birthday my grandma bought me all 5 New Kids on the Block dolls wish I still had them 😂👍👍👍 omg no cardboard wings 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ yikes Mattel 😂🤦🏻‍♀️ I wish I could remember which year I got for holiday Barbie as a kid. Barbie fashionista in 2016 in December hooked Marissa & I onto dolls. I think before Barbie we did have Shoppie dolls by moose like def the happy places lil ones. But def Barbie giving us a curvy body made me fall in love with dolls because after having my kiddo I was never able to get back to the weight I once was at my height and that’s okay.

Hi I started collecting dolls when I was little. It started with the wizard of oz 1999 dolls, the barbie movie dolls,I played with them and I had Bratz that I played with all the time but it didn't take off until Christmas 2003 were I got My first American Girl doll Kailey girl of the year 2003/2004. That's were me collocting American Girl dolls changed everything. The following Christmas I got Samantha and Nellie the rest was history with me collocting American Girl dolls. In 2021 I got Rainbow High dolls series 1 and 2 I collocted then I haven't bought a fashion doll for myself in a very long time until rainbow high then I haven't played with fashion dolls sense my little sister played with monster high dolls. I'd go and help mom and dad with getting the right MH dolls for my little sister for Christmas and her birthday making sure that the dolls didn't have wonk eye. I also watched monster high doll review videos too from my world all the time.
