      i agree
to an extent, i get what they're saying but i don't think it would necessarily "talk them off the ledge" so to speak
i have daily ideations and if someone tried to give me reasons not to do it, it wouldn't make me wanna do it more, i'd prob just ignore them at most tbh
you should be able to broach the topic they're struggling with
but that's just my outlook ig

    • @SoulDevoured
      @SoulDevoured 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +32

I've called the local hotline and done community service of this nature. The idea is that you need to let someone feel safe enough with their thoughts that they will open up and get these things out. Very often that's all they need in the moment. To feel heard.
The idea is to get them thinking differently and you can't do that if you feed them what they expect "don't do it you have so much to live for!" Obviously they don't think so if they've come to this point. You need to listen to what's going on in their head before you can do anything about it... And that's not really the hotlines job. They're not therapists, they're just someone who listens and gets the caller to consider things.
That being said I don't agree with it being a rule for someone who is actively dying.

Former dispatcher, I have a couple of calls that I remember, but one I think about a lot is my uncle. The first call of my shift was my aunt calling. My uncle had passed away in his sleep. My aunt was too upset to notice it was me on the phone. I offered to go through CPR with her but she didn't want to. Had to go on with the rest of my 12 hour shift known that my uncle was dead. Worsted part? When I finally got home my dad, his older brother, had no idea that he had passed. No one in the family bothered calling to let him know. Got me thinking about how someone could pass away and their family could have no idea even hours later.

Had a friend who was an ambulance driver. This was the call that made her give up her faith:
Police and firefighters were called after very big and powerful man had a psychotic break and was attacking his wife and infant child. When she arrived the man had already been subdued and put in the car. One of the cops was just sitting on the curb in a daze with what looked like vomit all over the front of his uniform. He just kept muttering to himself "He hit me with the baby." In the incident the man had caved its head in. When police arrived he started swinging it by the ankles using it as a club on the officers. The stuff on the first cop was grey matter. I cant remember whether it was other police or the firefighters who lost it, but one had to fight back the other from pulling the man back out of the car and beating him to death.

The sad part is many of these people are searching for companionship because their condition has already driven away the people in their lives. Animals won't leave them.

That is going to be the new normal if you have a ban on abortion.
It gets worse when the dead foetus starts decomposing in the womb, causes sepsis and possibly destroys the fertility of the mother, before abortion is allowed - putting the mother into mortal danger.

Former dispatcher at a University. I won't go into details but someone died. I can't forget. What I want to share is that it was so bad it changed how I trained new Dispatchers. "You can take the same kind of call a 100 times but the stars, planets align and the 101st call will get to you. Don't let it fester. Seek out someone you trust, councilor, if you are religious your religious leader.". I couldn't let new dispatchers go through what I had. I had to give them a fighting chance.

I found my MIL dead in her house. She was draped over a large foot stool. Called 911 and told the operator that I had found my MIL dead. Operator insisted I start CPR. I explained that it was too late for that, but she insisted. I managed to get the body off the stool and into the floor. I explained that her face and knees were black and her jaw was locked with her tongue out and the operator still insisted that I start CPR. Luckily the EMTs showed up. I know the operator was just doing her job, but I found that to be extremely traumatic. I was trying so hard to stay calm , even though I was crying, and explain that she was undoubtedly gone, but she just kept insisting. I even got that “so, you are refusing to render aid?” Question. For heavens sake, rigor and livor where setting in and this woman was guilting me!? I have great respect for first responders of ALL kinds, but some people just have no common sense.

I'm not with emergency services, but I heard my girlfriend commit self game over with a handgun while I'm frantically trying to talk her out of it. I was 18 at the time. We had gotten off the phone briefly, at which time I had already called 911. The first paramedics arrived about 2 minutes after I heard the sound of the shot, followed by wet, labored breathing and a continuous splash as she bled very heavily from the new hole in her skull.
It took me better than a decade to realize that I had pretty serious PTSD from it, and I can promise that my life is not currently what it would have been, had that event not occurred.

She was unfortunate enough to have someone call in to say their husband had hung himself just a short time into that shift. 1:05:12 I wonder how many people realize these parents in all likelyhood had to go through this because the doctors/hospital wasn't allowed to perform an abortion. Because despite the babies being dead, that's what ending the pregnancy by medical means would be classified as.
It wouldn't matter that there was no life, and that the bodies could literily poison the mother if her body didn't terminate the pregnancy, there would be nothing that could be done because the parents and/or the medical staff would be charged with committing a crime. All because some holier than thou *[Language that will likely get me banned]* want to force suffering just because a sperm and egg combined .

When I went to get an abortion they said " Do you want us to tell you if it is twins?" I said, why, what does that matter? They replied that if it was twins, they could not preform an abortion. I sort of smirked and said that they'd have to tell me it was twins anyways if that were the case. I never really understood it but hearing the call about the person who had to carry twin stillborns full term makes me think that possibly aborting twins might be a bigger risk to the woman's life or something? Dunno, just brought back memories of what I was told.

As someone who was suicidal, we know how traumatising discovering or having to witness a suicide can be. They werent selfish for wanting to commit, of course not, they're in pain, but to force someone to witness it (even just over the phone) was horrible of them.

It's hard to listen to these, but the ones for self termination help me to stay alive even when I don't want to do anything anymore. Honestly, since I was 12 years old and learned what it was when my cousin used his father's service revolver to end himself at the age of 16, I knew what happened to the people you leave behind. It's kept my brother and I both alive through abuse, depression and long undiagnosed mental illnesses. My brother has agreed to stick around until our mom passes, but has no promises past that. When he slips, I ruthlessly remind him that his daughter will blame herself. When I slip, my husband is there, but the knowledge of what I would leave behind, the pain and guilt the people who love me will experience if I take the quick way out...that has kept me alive when I wanted nothing more than to stop.

He's a Norweigian neo-Nazi who planted a van bomb in Oslo that killed 8, intending to blow up the office of the then- Prime Minister & injuring over 200 people, and then attacked the youth camp of the Workers' Youth League, killing 69 young people. He said he did it because the centre left Labour Party government needed to be punished for allowing what he believed to be a Muslim takeover of Norway through immigration. Classic neo-Nazi stuff, aka "the great replacement".

I’ll never understand people who commit in front of their loved ones. Most of the time suicides are impulsive and there’s nothing anyone could do to prevent it, but doing it in front of people you care about knowing you’re going to change the course of their life forever baffles me. I have someone in my life who did something just like this and I’ll never understand why he chose to do it. Alcohol probably played a huge part but he loved his brother to pieces. I still feel for his brother as it has shattered me to just know he died. I couldn’t imagine living with the imagery of seeing your brother shoot himself in the face.

I asked this question to my friend's mom (911 dispatcher) back in highschool for a paper I was writing. She said "I had a man call and say 'sent a coroner to this address I'm gonna jump ' responded 'no sir don't do that is there anyone you want me to call for you' and he never answered, he already jumped as soon as he ended his statement to me." She said she didn't expect it because all the suicide calls she got the person just wanted to vent and first responders always arrived before it could escalate. This time, the guy just said what he needed to do so his body could be removed before someone stumbled upon it.. that story still haunts me... Can't imagine what that guy was going through...

Watching these stories and then getting a add for babies or lottery tickets has got to be one of the most emotionally jarring things I've ever went through.
EDIT. Also story 92, while I understand this isn't exactly a empathetic response the moment I heard that the dad let the kid drag the gun behind him barrel up I literally screamed. Letting a little kid handle a gun is already stupid, letting them do THAT while you're right there is frustrating to a maddening level. That poor kid died because that dad was a freaking moron.

  • @Riateph

The first one is honestly one of the worst because it's not recognized for what it is. It's passed over and that's intentional. That is a first responder pulling out the lighthearted, socially-appropriate answer that gets people talking about socially-appropriate things. Bashing on the "stupid people relations" aspect of the job is relatable and easily ends up on a customer service and stupid-people-are-stupid tangent. That's what a non-answer looks like. That's what hiding sounds like. The responder chose that answer specifically *because* they didn't want to or couldn't get into the true trauma the question is likely to dredge up.
The happy ones are also intentional, but it's a different kind. They're almost practicing DBT, reversing emotions, a therapy technique to avoid leaning into negative emotions and spiraling. When you're sad you watch a comedy movie etc. They're focusing on happy ending or humorous calls. It's a legitimate self-regulation method.

One of my online best friends passed nearly 2 months ago from an accident at his home and these just make me wonder if his family called 911 in case they could get him help and what was going on at that time. If they did call for help, what was that call like?
He unfortunately passed instantly when the accident happened. I miss him so much. He was such a good guy.

I hope I end up the funny call list. I called in after a big storm the next day, I see a massive tree down and powerlines down. I stood on my back porch and called 911 and at the whats the emergency, I said "um i dont know if I call you but I have a line down and a tree down." I know how dangerous downed lines are taught but people from the electric company. They never told us who is more important to call since anyone near a downed line and box can be in danger, I was directed to call the electric company. The best part, I have an overhanging roof edge and by luck I was standing in the only dry spot and ended the call saying, "I think I should go in. I am standing in the only dry spot." had an arc around my back door that was dry and still have a big dead spot in my grass due to pole falling.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN, I HAVEN'T REACHED THE VIDEO'S HALF WAY POINT?! oy, it reminds me of ol' and new war stories (my brother was in the military, my sister answers 911 calls and my my grandfather (Former chief of near 7M metropolis R.I.P. ) all have horror stories. Makes my S.A. look like a joke. Oh, and my mom stabbed a cop at 16. We are a diverse family.

isn’t a 911 call, but it’s similar to the 2nd story! when my mom was young 4-6, she was with my grandpa’s mom (my great grandma) and while she was on the phone with my grandma she fell and had a stroke in front of my mom. my mom then picked up the phone to tell my grandma that “grandma fell and was asleep”. seems so scary to me but it doesn’t seem to affect my mom so much.

My brother's roommate is a 911 dispatcher, and he got a call to their apartment for a domestic dispute and possible assult with a vehicle. Of course, hearing his own address as the location of the incident was startling for a moment, until the caller said who the people involved were. It was a man and woman who have a very toxic and volatile relationship going on and have had the cops called on them multiple times. They were in the street in front of my brother's apartment. She was in her vehicle, and he was standing on the passenger side, drunk, punching the window and screaming at her, with his other hand gripping the luggage rack bar on top of her vehicle. She drove away while he was still holding it, which caused him to fall, and she ended up running over his leg. She drove around the block and came back. By this time, he was standing again and limped to the car and started punching the window again. She drove away again, and he fell again. Not sure if she ran him over that time, though. They both ended up getting arrested, and he had to be taken to the hospital for a broken leg.

"Here, let me help you hang up the phone" SIR DO YOU HAVE A DEATH WISH?
1:05:38 - If this happened in the last few years, it was probably because of abortion bans. Politicians don't care if the mother is a victim, or if the fetus is already dead, or if carrying to term would kill one or the other. A baby is not allowed to be removed until the 9 month mark. The doctor probably felt like garbage about it too.
1:12:15 - Imagine being so constipated that you're scared enough to call 911 and you get hung up on. Fecal impaction is an actual thing people go to the ER for, why would you try to charge someone for "wasting emergency services"? It's humiliating enough just calling to admit you can't push one out. Woman could have caused a rectal prolapse (basically, pushed out part of her intestine).

@1:32:30 Panic attack. Almost definitely a panic attack. Either having a time and it was the last straw like the narrator said, or possibly a trigger for a panic disorder. The extended calming time and the gas attendant calling for her being unfit to drive is consistent with it. It doesn't take much. The trigger is rarely obvious. I have abuse in my history and if I were having one of my worse days with it, the free gas would have made me cry, too.
