Dorothy’s ruby slippers in The Wizard of Oz were covered in gelatin sequins. Some of the pairs in private collections also haven’t fared well over the years.
I got to see some gelatin dresses in person at Lacis’ museum show of 1920’s beading and embroidery exhibit and it was the first time I’d heard about them-they couldn’t be washed! Talk about prohibitively expensive with only a few wears per intricate (read: expensive to produce!) garment!!! It blew my mind and I love the science experiments that are continually happening and it’s only a few fun examples of hindsight like this that make a few examples so fun to wonder about ❤
I suspect that it could be worn more often than we would initially assume? Most older styles heavily utilize easily washable undergarments specifically so that the less washable outerwear doesn't need anything beyond spot cleaning.
@@samanthakennedy121 They could not be spot washed on the actual sequins-that’s what I learned at the museum where they actually present real information I didn’t say their undergarments couldn’t be washed . . . Did you even read my comment before replying? Regardless of whether or not undergarments could be washed the dress itself would still get dirty and eventually need to be cleaned-LIKE ALL CLOTHES So I stand by my original statement that the sequins couldn’t be washed and LIKE WE LEARNED IN THE MUSEUM they were each worn no more than a few handfuls of instances because they can’t be cleaned But my all means argue with someone in a comment section instead of doing a modicum of research . . . 🙄
imagine dancing with your friends and your dress just starts melting away - the amount of stress that you'd feel at your clothes being ruined AND people being around to see it sounds awful
I much prefer heavy metal (if not high lead/cadmium) than toxic plastics (lead and cadmium and more...)!!! Work out and beautiful dress wear. Gelatin sequins definitely sound cool I'd wear them in cooler weather on the chest or something. LOL 😆 Definitely need to try on cake! Thank you.

I heard the horses were covered in it too and they had to stop them from licking each other haha
i was thinking it was edible jell-o. now my dreams have been vanquished.
It is edible- I mean it’s gelatin, right?
@@Song-Girl-Still-Singingyeah i think it is like she says in the video it would be cool to put on a cake
Edible and tasty mean very different things!
@@Rumadethat’s true. Even if it’s edible, it might not taste the best.
Technically they are probably edible....
I'm glad you confirmed they weren't water proof because my brain was going crazy after you said dried gelatin 😅

Dancing with your friends in the rain? Under the arms could be redone easily if the woman had extras
Gelatin sequins! Neat!
I think bug shells make for pretty lightweight sequins
Yes. Or those from fishes seem to be ideal.
@@Gundelfine didn’t think of fishes, perhaps because the ones I’m used to are mostly clear, do you think fish scales can be dyed?
Your hair is so pretty omg, it looks so soft
Your hair is gorgeous😍
Thanks!
I am probably wrong, but I seem to remember that it derives from the name given to Venetian coins, called zechins.
That would be really cool!

That is so interesting! Thank you for sharing😊
You outfit is lovely! Did you make it? If so would you mind sharing which pattern?
Seconded!
I’m not 100% sure, but I imagine that she made these from her own drafted patterns considering the level of sewing she does.
Cool! I kinda wanna make a dress with metal sequins now.
Bella come una rosa rossa come Ye❤
Omg, edible sequins on a cake. Now THAT'S an idea!
So what you're saying is I could eat the dress
Interesting
That's really cool!
It's like the paper dresses of the 1960s. Why? Just why? 💕
You’ve got lovely eyes 🥰
I’d hate to be all beautiful and then caught in a rainstorm.
King Tutankhamun's grave goods included sequinned clothing 💖
It would be great on a cake!
Always thought they were contemporary but it's cool to find out otherwise.

We should start using gelatin for sequins again and maybe other plastic items to reduce the amount of plastic in the world
ur telling me i can eat this stuff????
This is WILD!
And then the dog licked off the bottom six inches of my dress....
