    I'm not from Singapore but I've been living here for a while now and I totally understand why they miss kimchi while they are eating. Simply enough, it's because they are in a foreign country and the dishes were so foreign to them. When I go back to my home country, Australia, I always craved Singapore's Chilli Crab and Hainanese Chicken Rice. I also miss my favourites - mee soto and laksa

      It seems that there is a stubborn myth that Korean food isn't available outside of Korea. I also think that due to many foreign foods being expensive to import and Koreans not having been free to travel much until just the last few decades that Koreans don't sample non-Korean foods much or if they do they are heavily adapted to the Korean palate and they know that, so foreign foods are a bit intimidating still. They aren't alone in that. Many Americans enjoy a pretty unvaried diet with few ethnic foods or exotic spices or preparation methods and are then uncomfortable eating anything other than McDonald's or having a burger and fries at the hotel restaurant when they travel abroad.

  • @sgxpress95
    @sgxpress95 7 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    a simple guide to getting cheap and good food in singapore:
    1) go to a hawker centre
    2) find the longest queue and join (usually its delicious!)
    3) enjoy!

    Yesterday my breakfast was $1.7 Econo Bee Hoon at Tanjong Pagar, lunch at Maxwell (well-known food centre within tourists) $3.50 ipoh hor fun. How the hell they managed to spend $50 for 3 bowl of prawn noodles? Crystal Jade also not so expensive. Food here is way way cheaper than a lot of metropolitan cities including Seoul. How Singapore got the ranking for highest living cost is because the aggregate took cost of buying cars into consideration!!
    btw for comparison prawn noodle below my office at Anson Road is $4 / bowl.

    • @2816524

    Like what one of the guys said, the chilli mixed with dark sauce is supposed to be a dip for the meat. The veggie is already drenched in a lighter soy sauce, and you can also eat it together with the fried onions for extra flavour. Well, when I say "supposed", I just mean how the locals eat it, and the way it is commonly done. but of course, to each his/her own. If dipping bakchoy in chilli soy sauce tastes like kimchi, then I think it is a good & innovative tip indeed! (Disclaimer: I've never tried it before though lol)

    Don't people know that the best places to eat local food in Singapore is the hawker centres? And it's really cheap too!!

      snp 2196 try hokkien mee, laksa, carrot cake, ice kachang and chilli crab!!
      Hokkien mee=> prawn noodles
      Laksa=> hmm.. Im not really sure how to explain that dish... But it's noodles in spicy soup with fish cake and spices😅
      Fried Carrot cake=> radish cake that is fried (go check out it's info using Google as I font really know how to explain it)
      Ice kachang=> a colour full dessert with red bean, jelly cubes, coloured syrup, condense milk, atta seed and sometimes corn
      HOPE IT HELPS!! 😆😄

      @snp 2196
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Singaporean_cuisine
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Singaporean_dishes
      If you are on a tight budget and don't mind experiencing the weather, I recommend visiting hawker centres or coffeeshops (despite the name, I'm not talking about a cafe, it's basically one shop with various stores selling a variety of different cruisines & commonly found in neighbourhoods, whereas a hawker centre is a larger area with also various stores). Off-hand, I would recommend Tiong Bahru Market, since it's not that far from town, Hong Lim Hawker or People's Park Hawker Centre (both are at Chinatown) or Ci Yuan Hawker Centre (they have machines to collect $ so you don't have to worry about counting errors & there's a karaoke place on level 2 which is just additional info. haha), Chomp Chomp is a popular hawker centre as well.
      Or if you want air conditioning, you can go to the food courts which are found in most malls (Major names are: Kopitiam, Koufu or Food Republic).
      Personally, I am a fan of (in addition to Chiyo Chan's reply):
      - Fish Ball/Minced Pork with mushroom Mee Pok (you could choose dry/soup, i like it dry)
      - Vegetarian bee hoon (especially with Tofu Skin Rolls aka Vegetarian Goose)
      - chwee kueh (the one in tiong bahru is quite nice too)
      - Chee Cheong Fun (which is found when you eat dim sum so you probably will skip this but it's cheap and nice for breakfast)
      - Cheese and mushroom or egg or plain Roti Prata (the asian pizza they introduced previously) or Murtabak
      - Prawn noodle soup like that kind introduced in this episode
      - Double Fish slice soup bee hoon (white rice noodles that look similar to spaghetti with both fried and sliced fish) with milk for most places (if they have fried egg that is golden brown, I would add an extra portion, e.g. the one at the food court at Raffles City Shopping Centre)
      - Yong Tau Foo (you pick your ingredients to go with your choice of staple food, kind of a healthier choice if you don't pick fried food)
      - Satay bee hoon (despite the name, it doesn't come with a stick of Satay)
      - Seafood White Beehoon (it's not just white bee hoon, google it, it's nice, just not as pocket friendly since seafood isn't cheap)
      - Banmian (Face Ban Mian 非板面 is quite common, google them =D)
      - Horfun (with Beef or normal)
      - Rojak
      - Indian Rojak
      - Char Kway Teow,
      - Satay (bbq meat on a stick with peanut sauce, almost like yakitori or meat skewers but the taste is different and really nice, i prefer pork as the fats will be sweet but if you don't eat pork, there's chicken ones too) some sellers only rent the stores to sell them at night, but the store at Ci Yuan has it in the day)
      - Claypot rice
      - CRAB (steamed, chilli, black pepper, salted egg yolk)
      - cereal prawn
      - sweet and sour pork or stir-fried beef with rice (usually the store at coffee shops that sells crabs will sell Tze Char, so just look at their menu en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tze_Char)
      - Oyster omelette (i prefer the ones I had in Taiwan but Singapore has a different taste so try if you want to)
      I'm not an avid fan but I would recommend:
      - Mee rebus
      - Mee Siam
      - Briyani
      If you have the budget for restaurants, I recommend Papparich, Chicken Pot, Dian Xiao Er (their signature dish is the Ten Wonder Herbs Roast Duck)
      and the list goes on.. I haven't even mentioned desserts.. Just go to the dessert store at the food court, off hand, i recommend trying "Tau Suan", "Bobo Chacha", "Pulut Hitam" and "Chendol".
      I'm kinda proud that we have alot to eat XD.... I hope that helps or can be a place for you to start. =))

      i guess you should watch another battle trips that also feature Singapore by the other 2 guys. they went for more localised speciality. you should go to coffee shops in singapore or hawker centres. there are a few hawker centres that are quite famous in SG. Newton Food Centre and Lau Pa Sat.
