    Hi Jo Michael,well you sure exploring the drains today so narrow just as well nothing is coming other way lol we used to keep our boat in the Marina at upwear called five miles from anyway no hurry used to be a great pub ,but in them days it had a license till 2AM so lots of noise lol looks like you are moving all the vegetation for other to follow,looks like the drains are not used much by boats nowadays .,you are deep in the fens so quite and beautiful lots of wild life did you see any owls ?I think it’s called spot the water Michael ,shame about the wind jo never mind we read what you said but I would rather listen to you then read it ,I found this blog very interesting indeed as other boaters don’t use them ,well till next time take care keep safe, John 🥂🌹🇬🇧👀❤️👏👏👏🐕🐕🐕

    What an idyllic journey in spite of the narrow canal. The water lilies, clouds and reflections in the water were fabulous. The shot of the 2 swans was my favourite and I think this video is one of my favourites of yours so far. Keep up the great photography and happy travels.

    Planning to 'do the Lodes' the second half of September so it is great to have a visual of what to expect. Laughed at the misspelling of Upware on your borrowed map! In another few weeks those skies will start to be full of the migrating Bewick and Whooper swans as they head to Welney Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust for the Winter. The black swans are really a sight to behold. Because it is such a long drag to get from the Grand Union Canal to the Ely Ouse - via the Middle Level - few boaters make the journey; and hire boats only available at Ely means that those on a boat for a short time don't bother with the Lodes. If they ever open up the link between Bedford and Milton Keynes I'm sure it will be much busier. Great vlog.

      They filmed in Sutton Bridge for that film. My family and I spent hours just watching as a helicopter kept coming in to film, ever so many takes. Part of it were children (I think) with a fire basket which we laughed at as we could see the little propane bottle. The boat looked beautiful and it had apparently arrived by lorry into Fosdyke and it was sailed round to Sutton Bridge.

    That's journey is more than a little surreal. I thought I was watching the African Queen at one point, although whilst Jo makes a passable Katherine Hepburn, I don't think Michael is going to be mistaken for Humphrey Bogart.
    Also nice to see George off the leash; there's something joyous about him.
    I assume that rather attractive bird with the long wings which you capture so well at about 23:15 was a tern of some sort.
    Also, those were some great skies.

    I thought the fens were just flat, swampy, and boring. Wow! They are beautiful! Your video is also unique. I’ve been watching TH-cam narrowboat vids for a long time and I don’t remember anyone traveling the Lodes or even the Wash. The village of Reach was also really cool. I’m going to have to track down more vids of this part of England. Good job, good job!

    Sometimes it takes a different view to realize what a beautiful place I live in. I use the areas all the time for dog walking a cycling even use the tow path for chores in Cambridge to avoid extortionate parking costs. You don’t realise how special it is when you see it all the time. Thanks for the reminder. I live in Stretham between waterbeach and Ely. I am lucky and next time I go out I will have my eyes open. Thank you.

    Fabulous as ever Michael and Jo. Your vlogs are without doubt the most enjoyable. Btw, I took my daughter Rosalie for a days narrowboating on 8th September from March Fox marina and I was telling her about your vlogs and lifestyle. I could hardly believe it when I recognised Michael’s hat and beard. Of all the canals in all the world you were travelling on ours, the old Nene. I shouted hello and Jo was filming us on her cell phone. Made my day. Such a coincident. Rosie thought I was “starstruck” Love to you both and of course George.

    Such unspoilt beauty and so many boaters have no idea what could be waiting for them. Thanks to your "pioneering" blogs maybe others will be enthused to follow your searching for the "mother-lode". Sorry, I should have resisted that pun but it got away from me.
    That journey with the perfect accompanying music was so very relaxing, for the mind and the soul. Just 'perfick'!

    Great to see you cruising our local waters. We visit Wicken Fen regularly to walk the dogs and enjoy the fens and lodes. We were there only last week and walked along the Burwell lode from the lift Bridge to the moorings next to Wicken lode. There were 2 boats moored at the Wicken moorings and we commented that you might have had a problem finding a spot at that beautiful mooring. Love that music. Lots of reeds. Good for the wildlife, not so good for boating. Hard choices for the EA and government, almost boaters versus the environment.

    What an absolutely stunning vlog in every respect! Beautiful scenery complemented by a perfect selection of music. I really think that the fact that it doesn't see much boat traffic is half it's appeal. Imagine encountering someone coming the opposite direction on the Reach Lode!

      Definitely, there is something special about being the only boat on the water.

    When you want to take NB on every yard of navigable canal, then that is what you have to do.
    Love the Fens: March has been our home base for the last 30 years, when we visit UK.
    Whickham Fen is a great place to visit.

    I love the Fens and really enjoyed your take on them. You could thatch the boat with the reeds you collected. I particularly like how you go to out if the way, less visited places. Music has improved, too. ☺

    There is a common asked question …. If a tree falls in a forest and there is no one around to hear the sound …. Is there a sound ? I thought of this when watching your video, how much beauty there is in this area of your journey and if you had not been there would it have been any less beautiful ? I concluded your presence and obvious joy and contentment in being there enhanced it’s beauty many fold. A great vlog thank you. Nev NB Percy

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Always wondered about that question ... yes, there's absolutely a sound. Air pressure doesn't care, or notice, if there are ear drums present! M

    Hi folks, I've just subscribed. I've only done the fens once, but would love to do so again, but on a wider beamed hireboat. We did a couple of the offshoot rivers, but I didn't know where the junction for the lord's was, so did'nt do them. Having now watched this vid, it looks like the Burwell load is doable in a wider beamed boat, Reach lode is definitely a no no though. A really interesting and informative vid, thanks for posting it.

    • @MinimalList
      @MinimalList  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Reach looks much worse than it is… you’d be pushing reeds aside, but there was quite a bit of water still either side of us… still don’t think you’d want much wider than 10 feet, maximum. M

    Your videos are so professionally done now. The music is beautiful and your narration over the top whilst travelling is great. I think I'm upto 180 on your earlier videos and then I watch each new one when I see it uploaded. I absolutely love your earlier videos but this one could be picked up by a travel channel, it's brilliant.
