Dino Charge and Kyoryuger both hold a special place in my heart. There have been miss steps for both franchises (Go-Busters, Ninja Steel, Samurai, Kuyranger) but the cool thing is that each of these seasons are a story unto themselves so if you don't like the mech or the suits or the story for the year then you can come back and try the next one, and it gives everyone something they might enjoy (there are many people that love the shows I mentioned). So no I don't think either are better or either are trash, both can be great. I'll still be here loving my Dekaranger and Lightspeed Rescue, Gokaiger and In Space.
Congratulations to Daniel Maniago aka "Clockwork" who is a veteran Marvel vs Capcom 2 and 3 player and who worked on this game. He left the team a few days ago but at least he got the "Fighting game of the year 2019" from Max and that is an honor for sure :) Clockwork is the reason why this game is good. He knew what he was doing. He also worked on the official guide for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 a few years ago.

Power Rangers Battle for the Grid was also my favorite fighting game this year, it takes me back to my childhood playing Power Rangers Fighting Edition with my brother for hours upon hours. In fact this has been the first fighting game my brother and I have played together in over a decade and I will always cherish this game for that reason alone.
That's awesome bro. My brother & I have a similar story from SF II to SFIV coming out. Fighting games in general are my fav genre because of growing up playing them with my brother & now my sons.
Watch the "Not invented here" video from Max. Until Japanese devs learn to put aside their national stigma, it's unlikely we'll ever see them implement rollback netcode. (tho they did start using the Unreal engine, so that's a start)
Extremely Underrated, alot of gamers only care about graphics, but graphics aren't everything, the gameplay is. And the gameplay is amazing in Power Rangers, it all depends on what makes it fun for you.
At its fighting game core Power Rangers Battle for the grid is not that bad. It's when you consider that you're having to pay for at least two characters that are for all intensive purposes part of the basic roster. That end up making the entire experience feel rather cheep.

I think you really have to give it to MK11. I honestly was not a fighting game player prior to this year, never really sat down and played one regularly; but Mortal Kombat 11 was the one that made me think "Hmm, you know what? I'm going to buy a fighting game this year". And it was well worth it. It appeals to the largest audience with stellar production and has an easy enough entry level that newbies can get into it. I remember I was at work one day and on one of my monitors I had some MK11 tournament playing, then one of my co-workers asked me if I played later since she saw it on my screen. Definitely would not have pinned her for a gamer, but games that appeal to a big audience can do that.
I think the best compliment I can give to why I love Power Rangers is the fact that I hate labbing in fighting games. Just spending time in training mode instead of fighting a person is so boring to me. But Power Rangers made me want to hit the lab. I would be at work thinking about practicing my dragon armor combos and thinking of how to use my assists better. That is why I totally agree with Max on this.
Hey Max, I just wanna say I recently bought Power Rangers and I'm so glad to say I see why it's your fighting game of the year. That shit felt awesome, and I felt that realization of, "I'm barely even scratching the surface...." Like this game is amazing. I love how it felt to learn new characters and discovering new potentials with my combos. I personally would put this in my top 10 fighting games ever honestly. If it wasn't for you, I wouldn't have found this treasure.
For me MK 11 is the fighting game of the year. The game has a good roster, gameplay is good, story mode is good, you can customize each character, the online is good and you can do more stuff in the game.
whenever Max says "It didn't grab me" regarding MK11 I just think of Steve yelling "HE GRABBED ME" as Shao Khan grabs him for the first time after dozens of other failed attempts at challenge tower #300...

MK 11 Has great graphics , I like the gameplay of it . I like meter system it has . It’s a game anyone can pick up which is plus . It shouldn’t take forever to learn a fighting game. It gives you more stuff to do then any other fighting game out there.
If you watch Power Rangers as an adult, its actually a pretty solid, if not clunky, oddball science fiction show. There's even some dark moments throughout the series.
Power Rangers is easely my favorite fighting game of this year. I just think that despite all the odds, and the small budget, they managed to make a really fun game with a good online. I would not even consider MK11 because of the character designs alone. They toned down all the sexyness, and I'm not a fan of this.
I'm glad there are none brain washed youtubers still like Maximilian, too many people care about showcasing AAA games and a lot of gems get overlooked.
My favorite fighting games of the decade were (in no particular order) *Dragonaball fighterz* - I love the franchise, love the gameplay, love the shitposts *Blazblue central fiction* - really like the characters and their movesets and the ridiculous anime story *Tekken 7* - Tekken has and always will be one of the most badass fighting games to competitively (really hope they give all of the characters proper arcade endings in the next one though) *under night in-birth* - This game probably has some of the most satisfying combos to pull of and to watch as well. Super satisfying. All of the tournaments leading up to and including evo were so fun to watch. My hopes for the next decade of fighting games are: - marvel vs capcom 4 with good visuals - for guilty gear strive to be just really fun to play - for street fighter 6 to be more fun to play than 5. (I tried but it didn't really grasp my attention) - new installments for every one of my favorite fighting games of this decade - new awesome fighting games - rollback netcode lol

It's sad how people keep forgetting about Dead or Alive. Beyond the shameless fanservice, there's a great fighting game. Funny thing is SF5 gave a lot of costumes to the female characters, especially Chun Li. And some of these costumes seems they came directly from Dead or Alive series

I totally see where Max is coming from. And he may have made the right call. But.... I'm kind of at the point where you can have the best fighting in a game ever. Best mechanics, best balance, etc. But if there's nothing to do in your game then what does it matter? Busted online and little to no offline content to work on. What's the point of getting good? MK11 isn't my favorite fighter to play. But it gives me so much to do where I have an easy 300+ hours in the game. Sometimes I want to fight online, other times I want to fight bested CPUs in towers. But I'm always unlocking new stuff in the game. More fighters going forward need to start thinking about this. imo
I get the appeal of spending hours unlocking stuff, but when the entire game is designed as gacha game it takes the fun out of it for most people. I'd rather have static item placements so I can get the things I want from the game for characters I use instead of leaving it to chance. Then maybe down the line if I feel like unlocking everything else for other characters I can. The whole gacha system in MK11 has been implemented so poorly that it's not even fun to unlock anything. Don't even get me started on the towers. Those suck even more, even after they so-called patched it. They're still not fun. I'm glad you're enjoying it, but it's poorly implemented and it shows.

You're banking on a developer to think that their model isn't the best it already is. If moving from Injustice 2 to this says anything, they think it's good and won't change it.

Unless the government gets involved and gets rid of lootboxes, things won't change because greed is all these companies know. Instead of making a competent, fun game. They spend time figuring out how to implement features that no one wants for a profit. While MK11 doesn't have that now, again they got caught with their pants down, it has all the makings of what could have been.

While I would say Smash Ultimate because of how late into 2018 it was released, I would have to go with Power Rangers and SamSho. Incredible games that I would love to invest more time into to get better at.
I see many people disappointed with mk11, and that’s weird for me. In my opinion mk11 is the best mk gameplay wise. It’s more grounded, neutral based game, also the most balanced. Mkx and Mk9 both had their fare share of broken characters, in MK9 cyrax,kabal and sonya. And for mkx the whole cast 😅.When it comes to content and story, mk9 is the best by far. My only gripes with mk11 is the gore it feels disconnected from the gameplay, Whenever a fatal blow, or a fatality start the game transition turns to a cinematic mode where it shows you how gory is it, and that with time becomes tedious, yah they’re fun at the first time but that’s it. They’re dependent on the shock value. I loved crushing blows, moves that rewards you with damage and violence, based on your skills. I wish they would start integrating violence into gameplay, the more skilled you’re the more violent moves you can do. Unfortunately Mk games are notorious for scrubs, because it caters to casual audiences, and to me Mk11 is a step toward the right direction, since it’s the hardest mk out of the last 3 games.

What's always held me back on BFTG is the property (i.e. Power Rangers) not the graphics or anything like that. I didn't get into Power Rangers as a kid and it feels dumb to me from the outside. It admittedly shouldn't matter if it's a good game but that has been my hang up.
(Spoilers of Max's video) I totally agree with max with his top fighting games and not only For Power Rangers to be his top game it's also very fun to watch. My favorite videos was with the dlc characters he did because they looked cool and played cool. Max was doing crazy bat shit combos and did so much damage I enjoyed it. My friend is a huge Power Rangers fan so he lets me on the lore of it all so I don't have to look it up XD
It's good that power rangers has really come along way...its still improving great support for 20bucks!!...I hope it gets a bigger recognition and comes back stronger in 2020
SamSho is my personal favorite. The netcode isn't great, and that is my biggest complain. But I just love the pace and flow of the game. Plus the characters in SamSho have always been amazing, it's just great to see them again. Plus some of the newcomers are super cool as well. Hitting someone with Darli Dagger's saw feels SO amazing. I love this game.
Can't front this game is hella fun, even before the voice overs and hit sparks etc.... back when the game came out for $20 I said fuck it and let nostalgia take over and I'm so glad I did.....but even still I played MK11 more so.......

As a lifelong PR fan and a fighting game fanatic it makes me so happy that Bftg exists and is as good as it is.
MK11 = biggest let down of 2019 for me. I played MKX till my hands hurt, it's insanely fun. MK11...not so much.

I forgot that SC6 came out last year (I picked it up this year). It's all that's on my mind. I've not gotten a chance to try the rest yet.

Has great graphics ,
I like the gameplay of it .
I like meter system it has .
It’s a game anyone can pick up which is plus . It shouldn’t take forever to learn a fighting game.
It gives you more stuff to do then any other fighting game out there.
A year ago max... Would you have ever thought power rangers would be your top fighting game of 2019?
If you watch Power Rangers as an adult, its actually a pretty solid, if not clunky, oddball science fiction show.
There's even some dark moments throughout the series.
Power Rangers Battle for the Grid *will* stand the test of time, it will even get better and more better than ever in 2020
Power Rangers is easely my favorite fighting game of this year. I just think that despite all the odds, and the small budget, they managed to make a really fun game with a good online. I would not even consider MK11 because of the character designs alone. They toned down all the sexyness, and I'm not a fan of this.

I'd love to see his top fighting games of the decade
My favorite fighting games of the decade were (in no particular order)
*Dragonaball fighterz* - I love the franchise, love the gameplay, love the shitposts
*Blazblue central fiction* - really like the characters and their movesets and the ridiculous anime story
*Tekken 7* - Tekken has and always will be one of the most badass fighting games to competitively (really hope they give all of the characters proper arcade endings in the next one though)
*under night in-birth* - This game probably has some of the most satisfying combos to pull of and to watch as well. Super satisfying. All of the tournaments leading up to and including evo were so fun to watch.
My hopes for the next decade of fighting games are:
- marvel vs capcom 4 with good visuals
- for guilty gear strive to be just really fun to play
- for street fighter 6 to be more fun to play than 5. (I tried but it didn't really grasp my attention)
- new installments for every one of my favorite fighting games of this decade
- new awesome fighting games
- rollback netcode lol
Funny thing is, a lot of Max is saying about the Power Rangers game seems to apply to MvCI, which he loved.
The fact that Jump Force got more cheers than DOA at Game Awards keeps me up at night

Zovioh _FGC Well, Jump Force is a crossover so that might help it somewhat.
Also the FGC is absolutely biased against DOA. Haters can argue against this claim all they want, it's still clear if you look at various examples.

I mostly played it for some sweet Marie Rose fanservice, but I wish I had a local scene to play it.

It's sad how people keep forgetting about Dead or Alive. Beyond the shameless fanservice, there's a great fighting game. Funny thing is SF5 gave a lot of costumes to the female characters, especially Chun Li. And some of these costumes seems they came directly from Dead or Alive series

I'm kind of at the point where you can have the best fighting in a game ever. Best mechanics, best balance, etc. But if there's nothing to do in your game then what does it matter?
Busted online and little to no offline content to work on. What's the point of getting good?
MK11 isn't my favorite fighter to play. But it gives me so much to do where I have an easy 300+ hours in the game. Sometimes I want to fight online, other times I want to fight bested CPUs in towers. But I'm always unlocking new stuff in the game. More fighters going forward need to start thinking about this. imo
I get the appeal of spending hours unlocking stuff, but when the entire game is designed as gacha game it takes the fun out of it for most people. I'd rather have static item placements so I can get the things I want from the game for characters I use instead of leaving it to chance. Then maybe down the line if I feel like unlocking everything else for other characters I can. The whole gacha system in MK11 has been implemented so poorly that it's not even fun to unlock anything. Don't even get me started on the towers. Those suck even more, even after they so-called patched it. They're still not fun. I'm glad you're enjoying it, but it's poorly implemented and it shows.
@@sjue316 Sure. Don't get me wrong, there is room for improvement. But the fact that it has things to work towards at all is a million times better than the nothing that other games have.
@@ChaosLegionaire You're right. It can be improved, but that's thinking that the devs already don't think the game is good as is. Take the rewards for example. I guaranteed the devs wouldn't have fixed that without backlash. Because they wanted you to grind it out. Whereas most people who play games don't have that kind of time. You're banking on a developer to think that their model isn't the best it already is. If moving from Injustice 2 to this says anything, they think it's good and won't change it.
@@sjue316 Sure. But that doesn't change the fact that NRS games simply have things for you to work towards and rewards which can be earned. Which by nature of those things existing put them far ahead of other games.
What WOULD drive them to improve things like their progression systems would be for other games to start challenging them by including their own rewards & unlocks. Which really has yet to happen. Maybe one day....

I don't care if I get color unlocks or brutalities for D'vorah or Baraka. I'm never going to use them. Just let me get what I want instead of padding the game down with stuff I don't care about. Don't even get me started on the whole brutalities being locked behind a lootbox mechanic. They're literally hiding a gameplay element behind a lootbox. Now if you like that system, that's cool. However, the average person doesn't have time for randomized bullshit. Not to mention that I guarantee they would have implemented other forms of microtransactions if they hadn't gotten caught with their pants down at the beginning of the release.
You have way more faith in NRS than I do. Like I've said previously. MK11 is the last NRS game I will ever buy. I've been duped twice. I won't be duped a third time. Unless the government gets involved and gets rid of lootboxes, things won't change because greed is all these companies know. Instead of making a competent, fun game. They spend time figuring out how to implement features that no one wants for a profit. While MK11 doesn't have that now, again they got caught with their pants down, it has all the makings of what could have been.

The thing about mk11 for me is that everything beyond graphics, sound, art design....has a lot, a lot of bullshit. The cons overlaped the pros.
Agreed. Max knows this and I don't really get why he put it on his list. Especially when Steve, Kenny, and him were all agreeing that it was the biggest disappointment for them this year. This was literally the conversation they had last night on stream.

While I would say Smash Ultimate because of how late into 2018 it was released, I would have to go with Power Rangers and SamSho. Incredible games that I would love to invest more time into to get better at.

I see many people disappointed with mk11, and that’s weird for me. In my opinion mk11 is the best mk gameplay wise. It’s more grounded, neutral based game, also the most balanced. Mkx and Mk9 both had their fare share of broken characters, in MK9 cyrax,kabal and sonya. And for mkx the whole cast 😅.When it comes to content and story, mk9 is the best by far. My only gripes with mk11 is the gore it feels disconnected from the gameplay, Whenever a fatal blow, or a fatality start the game transition turns to a cinematic mode where it shows you how gory is it, and that with time becomes tedious, yah they’re fun at the first time but that’s it. They’re dependent on the shock value. I loved crushing blows, moves that rewards you with damage and violence, based on your skills. I wish they would start integrating violence into gameplay, the more skilled you’re the more violent moves you can do. Unfortunately Mk games are notorious for scrubs, because it caters to casual audiences, and to me Mk11 is a step toward the right direction, since it’s the hardest mk out of the last 3 games.
Kudos for not choosing MK11 just by default. Power Rangers is a very underrated game, I'm glad you gave it the recognition it needs

What's always held me back on BFTG is the property (i.e. Power Rangers) not the graphics or anything like that. I didn't get into Power Rangers as a kid and it feels dumb to me from the outside. It admittedly shouldn't matter if it's a good game but that has been my hang up.

I totally agree with max with his top fighting games and not only For Power Rangers to be his top game it's also very fun to watch. My favorite videos was with the dlc characters he did because they looked cool and played cool. Max was doing crazy bat shit combos and did so much damage I enjoyed it. My friend is a huge Power Rangers fan so he lets me on the lore of it all so I don't have to look it up XD
It's good that power rangers has really come along way...its still improving great support for 20bucks!!...I hope it gets a bigger recognition and comes back stronger in 2020

SamSho is my personal favorite. The netcode isn't great, and that is my biggest complain. But I just love the pace and flow of the game. Plus the characters in SamSho have always been amazing, it's just great to see them again. Plus some of the newcomers are super cool as well. Hitting someone with Darli Dagger's saw feels SO amazing. I love this game.
Can't front this game is hella fun, even before the voice overs and hit sparks etc.... back when the game came out for $20 I said fuck it and let nostalgia take over and I'm so glad I did.....but even still I played MK11 more so.......
i wonder if power rangers keeps getting pushed it might make it to evo. having both dbz and pr getting fighting games one year after each other is so great for my nostalgia
