This is a great idea. To take this another step, the original sync pulse should be placed on the sound carrier so that it can be recovered with a descrambler. The method you described in your reddit post was a later scrambling system made by Zenith that did not use the sound carrier to recover the sync. If these scrambling methods were around today, SDR could be used to make your own descrambler.
How did you scrambled it this way? It looks a lot to the old videocipher ll scrambling method. But I think it's not because on the other hand the video isn't inverted though.

That tearing on the screen was exactly what used to happen. In addition to that, the colors were reversed (inverted).
