      There are parasitic wasps that lay eggs in still living prey that are far more akin to Xenomorphs than these.

      I am so thrilled they discussed them! Ampulex compressa is my favorite insect ever! It's so cool how they disable the roach. The burrow isn't even to keep the roach in. It is pretty much in a stupor for good. The purpose of blocking the entrance is to keep other things from disturbing the roach and larva. Speaking of the larva, once it hatches, it eats the roach alive. Targeting the less vital areas first, to keep the roach alive and fresh as long as possible. Then it becomes a pupa in the roach remains, before continuing the cycle. Freaking fascinating.

      How about the mind controlling fungi? Some will spore in an insect then make it perform certain actions to help it reproduce. One species makes an ant drown itself to continue its life cycle in water. Another will make an ant go out mid-day climb the tallest grass blade, clamp jaws, and stay there until accidentally eaten by a grazer to continue its life cycle in that animal's gut.

      Funnelwebspider lol but as a spider wouldn't ur enemy be wasps? I mean wasps eat spiders.. but hey if u hate roaches as well then yes we can be friends... ironically enough this comment thread actually addresses my three most hated bugs.. (spiders, wasps, and roaches) spiders freak me out, but I won't kill them unless they are huge or in my house.. roaches must die no questions asked, and I just run from wasps.. lol

      +Hokahey i love spiders. Mostly the big ones because the small ones are too fast. I love wolf spiders! And tarantulas. I don't like wasps because they're over aggressive assholes and some (like the tarantula hawk are really beautiful) kill spiders which is bad.

    imagine if a wasp evolved well enough to inject her poison into a human

    • @syweb2
      @syweb2 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's not really evolving "well", but alright.
      What benefit would a jewel wasp have for attacking us, anyway? We're too different for its venom to act in the same way, we don't have the same body chemistry as cockroaches and thus cannot feed them as well, and we are much too big for them to easily subdue.

    Last year we had to deal with the fact that some wasps chewed a hole in an exterior wall of our house and started building a hive in my sister’s bedroom wall. She got stung a time or two and kept wondering how she’d wake up to a couple of wasps in her room. By the time we figured it out and called people in to take care of it, the dry wall where the hive was had been eaten to be paper thin and the buzzing by the hive sounded like electricity. Needless to say, once they were taken care of, we had some fixing to do.
    Wasps and such are neat, so long as there’s space in the togetherness.

    if the wasp just lays it own eggs in the fig, wouldnt that cause some serious inbreeding?

    • @spoonikle
      @spoonikle 7 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Patrick Roelant - while i am sure inbreeding is common, I think more than one female entering the fig is common enough as well.
      insects inbreed a ton. They must have basically selected out most genetic diseases via their vast spawning rates. Only the lines tolerant to duplication survive.

    • @bluestormpony
      @bluestormpony 7 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      inbreeding is only really an issue for animals that dont have a lot of internal genetic diversity, like humans and pure bred breeds of animals.. we get ours from having hit the critical population point of 10000 individuals, hitting this point also hampers our ability to evolve genetically

    • @frank6587

    My favorite wasp is the aphidius wasp, which gets rid of a thorny problem on my leafy greens. When I find one of the wasp's aphid mummies on my bitter greens I pick it up and put it back in the garden. Eventually the aphidius wasp larva will chew a hole in the aphid its been slowly eating alive, crawl into the dirt and overwinter there where it will emerge as aphidius wasp, a pollinator that lays its eggs in aphids and uses them like something out of the alien movies :)

I kid you not. That wasp had to know I was there too, because I skated up and watched them from like a couple feet above the struggle. It was an amazing battle. The wasp seemed angry.

    When I was a kid I once watched a tarantula hawk wasp drag a tarantula to a fate similar to the cockroach. It was horrifying especially because the tarantula doesn't get to go out on a high just paralyzed

    down south my grandpa use to take this flame thrower he made out of steel pipe, a can of propane and a small hand torch as the pilot light, there was a massive hive so my grandpa threw a paper cup full of gas at it and lit it up with the flame thrower, you could see the wasps that got to close to the flame just burst into flame and dissapeer

    The cockroaches get off easy having a mind-controlling cocktail keep them drugged up while a chestburster incubates inside them. They COULD be fully lucid and just be paralyzed, like another wasp does to them.

    Somehow,that made me pity the cockroaches.But they aren't the only one.A fungi called Cordyceps also mind-controls ants and in the end,kills them.

    I sort of have a phobia for wasps (ever since the attacked me that fateful day back when I was 7), so this was VERY unsettling... except for the Cuckoo Wasp, had no idea they could look NOT ugly!

      I was stung when I was around 8 but it was my own fault for getting too close to a nest. For the most part wasps will leave you alone so long as you respect them so there is nothing to fear.
      Also most varieties of wasp cannot sting and there are a lot of beautiful wasps in lots of different colours and designs that you can observe safely.

Luckily my high school lab partner also saw it... Man if only cell phones existed at that time... Well, if only cell phones smaller than a large brick and with a camera rather.

      Probably, most foods have a have a minimum amount of bugs per 100 grams allowance. so most plant based foods that you eat definitely have bug parts mixed in. It's best to just not think about it...
