Thank you so much again for reacting to our video!!!!! Thank you for tagging us. We dedicate all our content to immigrants around the world who just want to experience what we did. For us Cubans, it’s a surreal experience to go to a supermarket. And now we are here for a couple years, it’s been a first time experience for many things. Cuba today is much worse than when we left. No electricity for 20 hours a day. Food prices are so inflated… no more meat. It’s really bad. We pray the end of socialism in our country. Free Cuba!!!!!

❤ I felt heartbroken watching this video, I think for similar but also different reasons than I see in comments. The beauty of his reaction is heartwarming. At the same time I felt a knot in my stomach and a deep disgust looking at rows and rows of food, much more than is NEEDED and a lot gets thrown out bc it's not sold before the expiration date. So we see with our eyes in Cuba NOTHING and see in our country full rows of food. And all people can do is blame the government and blame this and that when in reality we should look in the mirror and blame ourselves for those empty shelves and for the starving people of this world. The amount of people who take more than they need in the world because of Greed especially those of us in the west myself included are the problem. The reason why because there is more than enough food in the world for every human being if we stop taking more than we need. It is still possible if enough people from around the world come together and stop being polarized by fear and money and power stop being divided by differences and come together by our similarities because we are all human beings and we all have the same needs. WE have to change our world together or there is no future I see where the humans survive. In democracy or other.

My mom is from Laos which is a communist country. She escaped with her siblings and stayed in a refugee camp in Thailand until she got sponsored to come to the US. She had friends who tried to escape with their children and drowned. I have friends from school who were from Venezuela and saw the same poverty there. They've been helping their family come to the US. We're incredibly blessed here in the US and it's why I'm so passionate about pushing back against those who support socialist, communist and Marxist ideas in our government.

I'm from South Korea. I know people from North Korea and many of them had never had meat until they made it into South Korea. I've seen secretly filmed video of children in North Korea digging into the dirt to look for bugs to eat, because they were so hungry. It is so sad to know that just a short distance away from where there is so much food that children are starving to death.

The USA is great in a lot of ways, but with all the money our rich 1% have you would think we could learn to try to do a few things like Canada, and most of Europe. The most memorable ones for me were when they went to a steak house for the first time. In Cuba you can be SHOT IN THE HEAD where you stand if you are caught eating steak. The look on his face when he took that first bite just warmed me from head to toe. 🥰 Also their trip to Red Lobster where he had Lobster for the first time. Such an experience for him! My great-grandparents fled from Russia just prior to the upheaval of WW1. They came to the U.S. with their only two living kids out of ELEVEN, a toddler and a baby (my grandpa) and whatever they could fit into two small travel bags. They made their way across the U.S. and settled in Ft. Collins, Colorado where they became farmers. My great-grandma never spoke English, or from what I've heard from older family members, chose not to speak it in the company of others. They forged a new life here, raised a family, made new friends, and died knowing they were able to be successful and live happily in the Land of the Free.
Both sets of my grandparents lived thru The Great Depression where they saved everything from bacon grease, to stale bread, to their old clothes. My grandma saved quilts that her mom had made from old clothes and worn out sheets. I still have, and cherish, one of those quilts with fabric in it that's almost 100 years old! They threw nothing away. Our society has become so blasé about tossing things in the garbage just because they don't want or like it anymore. Too many people have forgotten, or were never taught, what "live within your means" is all about.
It hurts my heart to see Cubans living, or rather trying to survive, in horrible conditions. I see people in Russia and Ukraine fleeing from a war that they never wanted to fight, and people in N. Korea and other communist countries fighting to find food for just one meal. It damn near drives me insane to see our very own grocery stores tossing out perfectly good produce, bread, canned goods etc...due to their expiration dates passing or a brown spot on one banana in an entire bunch. Expiration dates are a guidline, not a deadline. Our country has become obsessed with ridiculously frivolous lawsuits over the stupidest things to the point that stores are forced to throw away food and lock the trash bins to keep people from pulling the food out of them, all because they might get sued over someone eating something that made them sick. I say let them dumpster dive and make it a law that people can't sue if they got sick from food they willingly took out of a dumpster. I know that sounds harsh, but I'd rather take the chance and have food than go hungry and die of starvation.
A lot of people need to take a good hard look at what's a WANT and what's a NEED in life these days! Their priorities have gotten reversed when it comes to that!

As someone whose family lived under a communist regime, just remember that in the 1950s the previous regime treated the people even worse than the communists. That is why the Cuban people celebrated the communist victory and actually believed for the first decade afterwards that their lives were 100% better. Try to imagine how bad that previous regime must have been that those people believed communism was a step up.

By American standards, an Aldi is a small to medium grocery store. For large grocery stores, we have chains like Kroger and Safeway. Stores like Wal-Mart, Target and Meijer are technically not grocery stores - they're department stores, which happen to include very large grocery sections. And then the giant places like Costco and Sam's Club are 'warehouse' stores with grocery sections, and they tend to sell things in large bulk quantities (and unlike other stores, warehouse stores require a membership with a small annual fee).

They had been taught that the pictures of full shelves and abundance of foods where propaganda made by the west. Here is a quote of his about his visit:
"when I saw those shelves crammed with hundreds, thousands of cans, cartons and goods of every possible sort, for the first time I felt quite frankly sick with despair for the soviet people"

Thanks for this reaction, Andre! Since you asked for other video suggestions, I highly recommend “North Koreans Try American Barbecue” by Digital Soju TV. In it, North Korean refugees (who have escaped from communism) try some great barbecue. But more importantly, they share a little about what their lives were like in North Korea, why eating meat there is so extremely rare, and what it’s been like adjusting to life in a capitalist society. You get their reactions to the food, of course, but also some very thoughtful reflections about how life is completely different from what they’re used to.

I grew up with Safeway in California.
Now in Austin we have Randalls which is a Safeway company.
A bit upscale from HEB which is my usual store. Though I would go to a particular Randalls (now closed) for their French bread to make Po' boys with that HEB simply doesn't have, which I find weird.

Andre, I have heard you reference the size of US stores in a number of your videos, with some variation in size expectation. In the US stores such as Aldi and Lidl are small or neighborhoods stores where you can get basics. Walmart is on the large end but offers everything including groceries.
Did a bit of searching, and for average grocery store sizes in the US.....
    1,000-2,000 m2 Small-sized stores (Aldi, Lidl, Trader Joe's)
3,000-6,000 m2 Mid-sized stores (Whole Foods, Save-A-Lot, Safeway, Food Lion, Shiloh Farms, Albertson's)
    7,000-11,000 m2 Large-sized stores (Publix, Harris Teeter, Lowe's Food,)
    13,000-17,000 m2 Very Large-sized stores (Kroger, Walmart, Wegman's, Target)
    13,000-15,000 m2 Club-sized stores (Costco, Sam's Club, BJ Wholesale)
Stores vary in size for the local market, but these are the averages. Club stores like Costco don't offer huge varieties, they offer huge sizes with low prices, and are usually taller. Stores like Kroger and Walmart offer a lot of variety. Typically the larger the store the more services they offer such as pharmacy, banking, shipping, hair care, vision (eye glasses), and so on. A number of years ago I lived in a state where you even got your drivers license in a grocery store.

Walmart and Target aren't like CostCo. Walmart and Target are just what we (at least used to) call "department stores". Stores like Costco, Sam's Club, and BJ's Wholesale are all the bulk discount stores. Safeway is a supermarket (grocery store) chain much like ShopRite, Acme, and Aldi (Aldi is usually smaller than the other chains here but offer excellent prices).

My parents also migrated from a communist country they left when millions were being killed. They had to board different ships and trains to different countries before arriving in the US. My parents visited their home country again and planned a month trip visiting relatives they haven’t seen in over a decade and they called us complaining after 1 week saying how they miss home and that they were already broke because they gave all their money away to their relatives who literally charged for everything😂. They brought $2000 dollars with them and that should last them months because a whole meal could cost only $2, they also missed all the things they had access to in the US. The Asian Supermarkets in the US are even bigger than the ones in Asia (ex -watch Korean TH-camrs reaction to H mart a Korean American chain)and there’s a variety of things all over. Even the Hispanic supermarkets are huge here, and are technically American Chains as well.

I don't think it's Miami. They live in Phoenix, Arizona (Mari grew up in Los Angeles). The onions in Texas are the same size but I will hand one thing to Texas: They (and Georgia) grow "sweet" onions there that are quite good but spoil faster so you have to buy them fresh.
"Is the internet accessible in Cuba?" In another video, they say that when Obama was President he went to Cuba trying to improve relations and because of his visit the Cuban government installed internet access in public parks. They don't say if that's still the situation but I assume it is so his relatives can possibly go to a park somewhere and see his videos.

I still think a requirement for high-school graduation should be to spend two or three months in a non-first world country, pretty much anywhere in Eastern Europe and Russia, the Mideast, or the entire South American and African continents. So many Americans have no clue how fortunate and spoiled we are when compared to the rest of the world. And I mean like 95% of Americans, perhaps even more, are clueless how the rest of the world lives. Also, hearing about it, or seeing it on TV is not even close to living among it and experiencing it first hand.
