In this video, I share the unexpected and serious consequences of a mistake that was unknowingly made, which has resulted in me being banned from entering the United Arab Emirates (unless I want to face imprisonment!). What started as a small oversight has turned into a legal situation with potentially severe implications if I ever return, including the risk of imprisonment.
This experience has been both eye-opening and a valuable lesson in understanding responsibilities off ALL the duties required when leaving a country you held residency in. I hope my story helps others avoid similar challenges when navigating the complexities of foreign laws. @@lisasingle when my partner and I lived in Spain the landlady did a walk through with us to make sure everything was in good standing before we moved and gave us our full month rental deposit back. She said everything was good. We had a cleaning lady come clean it the day before. The next day as we were driving to France as we moved back. She messaged us to say that she was keeping our deposit b/c of all the things that were wrong in the apartment. She had to pay for a cleaning lady for 10hr, she had to get things fixed…(they were things that were already broken before we moved in that I had taken video off and shown her) she added 30€ to this bill for 3 days of electricity as we stayed 3days past our move out. She said she charged us for cleaning supplies, toilet paper and propane as we left the apartment with non of those things. I told her that she never gave us any of those things upon moving in. The only things we had was a furnished apartment and all of those things stayed and they were all in good shape. She tallied the bill and it came to 1,200€ so she kept our deposit. Even though she came to the apartment 12hr prior and said everything was good. She knew we had left the country so she screwed us over. Now we do t leave the apartment until the deposit € is either in our hand or in our bank account.

A work colleague had a similar problem to yours. He had worked for many years in Dubai but had retired to the UK.
His UAE bank failed to cancel his credit card that had an annual fee. So when it came up for its annual renewal the direct debit bounced from his closed bank account. A penalty was charged , interest added, and eventually the bank lodged a legal complaint with the Police for debt.
Defaulting on a debt is a criminal offence in Dubai, and depending on the amount might lead to an arrest and imprisonment depending on the amount. Often the investigating officer will insist that the debt be repaid instantly , and that will be the end of the matter. 100,000 aed could lead to imprisonment.
In my colleagues case he did not know anything about it until several years later. On arrival at Dubai airport he was detained at immigration and taken to a Police station. On arrival he was taken into a senior officers office and the reason for his arrest was explained.
He then explained what had happened, and his explanation was accepted, the charges dismissed off the police computer, and he was immediately freed.

What a story! That must have been so scary for your friend when he arrived back into the UAE. I used to have nightmares about this happening to me. I’m going to get this resolved and THEN fly to Dubai, not the other way around 😅 I’m so glad they wiped the record clean for your friend, what a massive relief!

@ He had gone to Dubai as a favour for his old employer there to courier a specialist computer board used in the oil industry.
His boss had gone to collect him from the airport but ended up having to follow after him in his own car to the police station. His boss, the owner of the company was Indian.
On arrival the senior officer told my friend to instruct his driver (friends boss) that he could not enter and must wait outside.
I don’t think his boss was too flattered.

Absolute crap, it happens all the time that people leave and knowingly or unknowingly have a debt. You can easily arrange to pay the debt from abroad and any potential issues are fixed. I'm sick and tired of people with little or no knowledge of what goes on in the Emirates spouting their BS because a friend of a friend told them. You'd probably believe that all women need to be covered from head to toe in the UAE as well.

I am married to an Arab who has family allover UAE and especially Dubai. 1) do NOT talk to the company-or their people-yourself. 2) do NOT fly into UAE for whatever reason. This might be hard if ever there's an emergency landing. They WILL take you and they WILL hold you for whatever time they see fit. 1 day? 10 days? 10 months? Hard to say. They'll come up with excuses that only they understand. 4) find someone you can trust over there, that speaks the language fluently and is, preferably, a Muslim, and have that person "make a monetary offer" and all apologies that exist of apologies, even though it's not your fault. Good luck!

Back in 2014 I wanted to join Emirates. And I was searching for information and I stumbled onto your YT channel. I watched all your videos. Even got a clarasonic after watching your skincare video. (I still have it haha) and yes I made it to Emirates.., flew with them for 6 years until Covid happened. After all those years I’m still subscribed to your channel. But only later realised that the EK videos were gone.
But anyway., just wanted to let you know, that you helped me a lot to achieve my dreams of becoming an emirates cabin crew. You were my inspiration. Thank you!!

@Lisa thank you again! Really you helped me a lot back in 2014 and cleared a lot of my doubts about the joining EK. (It’s a very small one seperate from this profile) but I find people are so drawn to that content. So please upkeep those videos.
The decision to leave EK during Covid was not mine. Unfortunately they laid off thousands of us and didn’t hire us back. I was so heartbroken coz I genuinely loved the company. I (as many others) tried everything possible to go back but they had closed their doors on us. Now I’m working in a different middle eastern airline but…, once an emirates girl…., always an emirates girl…, my heart will always fly with EK.

Unfortunately, this type of situation is not at all uncommon. Utility companies frequently make such mistakes when it comes to people closing accounts and they then find that they have incurred recurring charges. This is a crazy situation, but, it's not uncommon. The chances of getting arrested / imprisoned are extremely low, although I understand the stress it causes. 100% don't pay the fine. There are relatively inexpensive companies that will query whether you have a criminal case in Dubai, what it is and how it can be resolved (not necessarily the full outstanding amount).
I’ve moved to and left Dubai several times, and I check in with them a year after I’ve left just to be sure. Never had an issue, but have had friends and colleagues have minor inconveniences that can spiral.

You absolutely need to consult a lawyer. First, clearing your name of an unjust false accusation is more important than the money. Second, there is probably a limit after which time debt can no longer be collected, there must be some kind of limit. 7 years? 15 years? Third, ETISALAT management should be able to resolve this issue, find the right person and contact them. Keep hammering on them forever. Make the issue uncomfortable enough for them, that they have to make a move. Give interviews, publish videos, and also get a lawyer to write letters for you.

Nevertheless, I would still make an effort to contact Etisalat, and include a link to your video, explaining how this came as a complete surprise to you after 4 years, and that had you know about this misunderstanding, you would have immediately corrected matters.

I believe there may be some misunderstanding about how the telecom system works in the UAE. Here, if a bill is not paid for a month, the service is usually suspended, preventing further charges from accumulating. It doesn’t continue running unnoticed for years, leading to such a high amount.
If there was an outstanding balance, the telecom company would have sent multiple notifications and taken action long before it reached such a figure. The only way this could happen is if there was a contract with ongoing charges that wasn’t officially canceled. Even in such cases, providers typically follow strict procedures for debt collection.
Perhaps there was a miscommunication or an oversight in the cancellation process. However, for those familiar with the system in the UAE, this situation seems quite unlikely to occur as described.

If the dude wants a pilot job in the Middle East, if it’s not the end of the world for you, just pay it. It’s not like they’ll be able to roll security camera footage.
My concern is that it got to foreign affairs, which I wouldn’t think that would happen if the UAE just considered it only a civil matter. So I’m guessing paying off the bill won’t end the concerns.

Civilised countries distinguish between civil and criminal matters. A debt is civil and the police should not be involved. I'm in the UK, and here you would owe nothing until they had sued you and won in court - and it would get thrown out of court because they have been charging you for a service they were not providing.

It's a civil matter. The company apparently took this matter to civil court, and you didn't appear to straighten this issue. That's why you are flagged. It will be solved if you solve it, or else it won't be solved. So contact an intermediary and let the agent solve it there. Even though it costs money for the service, it will probably be solved with minor financial damage. But communication is key in this case. It's in Europe the same. If you don't pay your internet bill, a civil court order will be printed out, and then they come to your house and take anything valuable to pay off the debt. Just like the US, you don't pay your car, the car will be towed away, no questions ask.

    • @arigp1984
      @arigp1984 27 วันที่ผ่านมา

I think civil debt is actually classed as a criminal offence in the UAE (or maybe certain types, or within value limits). I'm sure you'd definitely have the opportunity to appear in court and defend against any allegations, but as the proverb states regarding laws and courts "the punishment is in the process" & lawyers fees are amongst the worst grudge payments we make in life, so most would rather just pay the debt than even go through the process of the criminal justice system in most countries. Whilst I do think that protocols should exist to automatically stop service after a few months of non-payment to limit accrued liability, I still don't think that the company would intentionally want to be unfair to you, & I'd think that if you escalated the matter to actual decision making management via some phone calls & emails, & furnished them with the proofs that you have of having returned all their other items etc & repatriated back to Australia, I'd imagine they wouldn't hold you liable for the services that you didn't actually receive over the subsequent years to that, & I'd think at most hold you liable for the cost of the remote which wasn't properly accounted for. Good luck. Keep us posted.

I am sorry to hear this, it can happen :(( I have a similar situation minus the black listed part. ; we moved to a villa in Dubai in December 2023 and couldn't use our du services anymore because they do not cover the new area. As per the contract, we are allowed to exit the contract without any penalty fees because it is their fault if we cannot use their services anymore. We visited the du store at the mall and spoke to the store manager who said it compulsory to pay the final bill on the spot before they can cancel the contract on their system. We did just that and now it's been over a year that we are being harassed by du collection services to pay the same final bill with already paid. I explained over 10 times on the phone that it was paid in the store otherwise the cancellation couldn't have gone through and i asked them to contact the store manager to double check in vain...i still receive calls to this day but i refuse to pay 500 AED twice just because they do not want to do their job...

Paying is admitting guilt and the offence is assumed to still be committed. Unfortunately, what has happened has happened. You need to hire a UAE lawyer to get your name cleared, yes it sounds like an unnecessary experience. Leaving it may eventually result in your name being added to the Interpol list to prove the point or being added by mistake due to the amount owed and not by the nature of the crime committed, by then it now affects you for any country you go to. As I said it happened now, you clear your name regardless, either with the help of the UAE Consulate who called your high commission or your consulate or your friend finding a reasonably priced lawyer who has experience in dealing with it. Act Now!

I did try that. You should watch Part 2 which was uploaded yesterday as it explains how the company ended up getting in touch with me to have this resolved.

It might be just me, but the background music makes it hard to focus. It's so distracting :) 😊

Oh I’m sorry! I know that’s been a problem in other videos because I’ve been learning the editing as I go, I didn’t realise it was a problem on this video too. I’ll be more careful in the future to keep the background music softer in volume.

Why can't you just prove your payment for the remote?
