Reading 23 titles on this list is really solid- I've only read two! Even though so many people had an impact on creating this list I think it still definitely has gaps in the types of books it recommends. I would've preferred them to put out a few different lists recommending different genres of books, but I can understand that "100 Best Books of the 21st Century" is a much catchier title.
Dang, I have to read Lincoln in the Bardo!!!! It was one of two books I added to my TBR after seeing the list (Lincoln in the Bardo, The Looming Tower). Reading the blurb... it wasn't something I'd normally pick up.... but I'm very intrigued!
Great video! I’ve only read The Fifth Season and DNFed a handful of the books, but have so many on my shelves that I’ve been meaning to get to for years. I’m more excited than intimidated to read Lincoln in the Bardo now so thanks! And also, after going through the NYT top ten books of each year lists today, it’s pretty apparent that almost all of the books on this list come from that or their notable books of the year lists. Did they actually take into account the surveyed people’s picks or did they just ask them to vote on NYT best books of the last 23 years? It seems kinda fishy to me.
Hmmm that’s an interesting angle. They surveyed at least some authors but what the overlap was or how much input it made who knows. It could also just be that if it was considered a best of the year, it is more likely to withstand the test of time in making it to this list. But yes, Lincoln In the Bardo is much less intimidating than it may seem!
I've read 19. I definitely feel like an author should've only taken one spot. Tomorrow x3 was good but not worthy of this list. The Fifth Season- yes. No notes.😂 Persepolis and Fun Home- yes! Happy to see some graphic memoirs. I was stunned that Sarah Waters' Fingersmith didn't make the list.
I could have missed it, but no Khalid Hosseni? I would have put 1000 Splendid Suns on there for sure. My fav on this list is Broken Earth/The Fifth Season
But if the romance novels are only vote by one author they never gonna make the list, James Patterson nominate The DaVinci Code. The voting was by numbers, the most voted made the list
@@bookishmelody in saying that if you look the ballots they publish even the comercial genre writers nominate lit fic. According to Ming Jin Lee (writer of Pachinko) in her insta, they send their 10 picks, that’s why some authors nominate things like Harry Potter or their own books. We genre readers always have theories of why our genres are never in this lists. But after saw some of the ballets I have to reckon that even genre authors are gonna vote for lit fic
As a reader of litfic and genre, it’s an acknowledgment of how these lists generally fall out but these are absolutely popular books for a reason. My specific comment really isn’t a reflection on that nor an unpacking of any bias we may bring in to what we view as important. There’s definitely a lot to explore across the board!

Other groupings would have been fun-I feel like the featuring different people’s ballots may have been born of the same instinct.

I’ll be interested to hear your perspective! I will be interested to see if this list ultimately pushes sales for any titles.
I've not read any off that list. Best wishes with what you choose to read.
Same to you!

Oh Fingersmith is a good note (that I still need to read myself!).

I lost all sense of time and that is a pretty surprising omission!

Absolutely, I was never arguing otherwise it was just a way to illustrate the list was always going to skew away from genre fiction.
