I still love what we got with the Legion, but I would've loved to explore at least a small part of pacified Arizona. Although I feel like it would be a bit boring in terms of gameplay and mostly just sight seeing, I mean there's few to no raiders and all you'd have to worry about is critters, unless you're NCR of course then it's a whole diff story.
Yeah the Legion explored some interesting concepts, but I think they suffered a lot in terms of how they were shown in game- the lack of completion meant that so much of their characterization was Caesar just talking at the Courier for 10 minutes straight about his misinterpretation of Hegelian dialectics. I wish they had gotten more fleshed out, then we could've gotten more into "show, don't tell" territory.

Make it remote and well equipped enough to begin its own fight to liberate other towns while Ceasar is busy with the war. Or make it more subtle where you plant the seeds of resistance in the peoples minds and in the ending slide its shown how things turned out. Or perhaps there has been couple of towns trying to do this on their own already. You being chosen to pacify them duo to your great reputation with the Legion, your choices being either complete destrution of everything, bringing the population back under Legion rule or helping them by killing off the Legion host you were sent to assist.

Gotta be honest, they're kind of fun. Called in a ranger when I had four legionaire assassins chasing me. I had the equipment to take care of them easily but I wanted to test the radio out. A single ranger came. She got dropped down to zero health three times while fighting all four of them on her own, THEN came up to me saying something like, "Ranger at the ready!" Held out for a bit until she finally died. No legionaries were killed or effected much.
Except for Jesse Burch, who's presumably already exhausted the moment he walked into the studio. Or some other condition that excuses that amount of slurring and talking like he has the emotional range of a protectron. And on top of that fucking nasally accent too.
That's the whole thing with the NCR. They've got their flaws, but they're the most cohesive civilization and nation (as opposed to House's "it'll be great trust me bro" without a moment's consideration of the actual people he rules over) and have more of a plan than "we'll take over the west, then [?]". It relies less of the strength of the individual and more on the strength of the collective.

Running water, electricity (from power plants built AFTER the war), scientific and medical research, agricultural divisions, etc. They even are implied to have taken control of Vault City which means the other "most civilized" group is now under their control too.

As for how/when exactly they joined its not explicitly stated either. Fallout 2, which takes place about 40 years before NV, has a scheme you can uncover where Bishop, the head of the Bishop family in New Reno, is coordinating with the NCR to make false flag raider attacks against Vault City that scare VC into accepting NCR protection and statehood. That's one possibility (VC accepting it). Another ending has NCR invade VC and forcefully annexing it, but we don't really hear of any conflict. There is another ending in which Roger Westin, a Brahmin baron and Senator in the NCR, formally introduces legislation that curtails NCR expansionism and recognizes VC's independence, but I don't think that's likely because NCR is still expansionist and VC is implied to be a member. So, it's probably something between the endings. We don't hear of any conflict between VC and the NCR, so it's either independent but a lot of intermingling, or a member state that joined peacefully.
That NCR Radio is only works about 15% of the time, and it's only useful to get that regular Ranger drip when that Ranger inevitably dies when getting a taste of the daily grind of Courier Six.
For some reason, I have a bug where all the Legion in Nelson is hostile (I had Boone with me when I visited Ranger Milo). I used Ranger Milo and the radio NCR Ranger to basically clear out all of Nelson without losing any Legion rep (the only problem is that I miss out on all the exp too, but oh well).

I disagree, but there's a catch. Trooper's and Ranger's stats are affected by Charisma, and since Charisma is a dump stat in NV, they won't shine as much as they can. But if you have 7+ Charisma... Oh boy. You can get your own personal army at 30+ level, because you can call down BOTH of the reinforcements at the same time on top of your 2 companions, and Ranger can come with a brush gun or Sequoia, while having Guns at 100.

@@I2dios8 The Legion is not "just" one of their many enemies. The Legion is by far the most powerful faction the NCR ever faced. They are far stronger than the BOS and the Enclave.
Its so cool that the mojave outpost npcs have rep dialogue even though more often than not you probably are unknown to the ncr at the time of doing the quests there.
When I played FNV on 360, I’d like to challenge myself and run past the Deathclaws straight to Vegas. One time I did all the NCR quests up north and headed south. Was very pleasantly surprised with the Mojave Outpost having dialogue reflecting my reputation, right after I murdered the Legion in Nipton.

This is what I wanted in a protagonist. They treat you like a veteran soldier or a respected figure, but not too much as them kissing your feet or worshipping you like some idol. They treat you like a valuable friend and not some chosen one who's sent by gods who can do ALL the work for them. Looking at you Fallout 4.

You're not some mythical figure to the npc's but just someone who can help them enough to contribute to their efforts without invalidating theirs. It's funny how the Courier is technically not an actual NCR Trooper but people still treat you like one Except in the NCR ending, you get a branch for being a "good citizen"
I imagine the NCR views the Courier as an outsider loyal to the ideals of the NCR and as someone who is willing to become a citizen. So the soldiers and officers treat him/her as part of the group even if the Courier isn't technically a citizen.
At least the courier got the highest civilian branch. Does anyone ever got such a thing outside the NCR? Good chances that there's none or almost. For someone who isn't NCR, this is a very big honor
Uh, I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have my one courier than an entire battalion of ANY of the factions' troopers, even the Enclave Remnants. They should be reacting like the Marines in Halo do when the MC shows up.

I think that is because they expected people to have actually done some things before heading to the Frontier. I could understand the reaction if my character had just come from the Divide. I don't think the Frontier is meant for a brand new character.

Honestly that would have been a terrible idea, being part of the military means following orders without saying anything, imagine going around doing patrols and not much else, just waiting for the Legion to show up so you can shoot with your crappy service rifle at them and pretend you have a chance.
hey now, the service rifle got one hell of an upgrade after they realized it was a lot weaker than it was supposed to be and patched it. Also, the available modifications seriously upgrade it further.

I think the NCR radio might honestly be even more useless than the Minutemen artillery support. Artillery might take a while to warm up but at least they fuckin deliver. My biggest problem with the NCR is how they have so much plot armour in fallout games. To me the Enclave had half the plot armour of the NCR and BOS they would not have lost war. To me the Enclave who has space stations with nukes, massive air force, massive army and could have a massive merc if Enclave takes over New Reno.
What i hate is that you cant properly join a Faction. besides the BoS wich makes no sense and has almost no value. Well you can mention it to the Follower Guy in Helios One. Oh and you cna join the Kings. And get a Haircut.
It makes sense though, and I think it might be partially deliberate to avert the 'absentee guild member' trope for once. In Skyrim you can stay guildmaster/harbinger/archmage of like 5 factions without ever seeing a single member of the faction again for the rest of your life. That's just not realistic. You're not a meaningful part of the faction at all, let alone a valuable part of the leadership. Meanwhile New Vegas handles the idea of a wandering protagonist very well. You're an independent contractor known for having worked with your chosen faction, but you're not really part of NCR's chain of command and you're not really a legionnaire. That explains why you can still dick around the Mojave or sign up to guard a Zion caravan etc without getting into trouble with your bosses. The only true 'boss' you could be said to have (if you choose that path) is House, and House gives you a lot of leeway and freedom to accomplish your tasks. Imo the faction reputation system is an incredible idea, since it accurately describes the average RPG protagonist's relationship with factions. I'm just pretty surprised that it isn't repeated for Fallout 4.

It's amazing how they accounted for different lines of dialogue according to your reputation with different characters. It is especially with someone like Ranger Ghost where in a standard playthrough you are only neutral with the NCR when you reach her.
I can never help myself from siding with the NCR. Once you really get the ball rolling they really come around on you and you can see them come alive and become a proper functioning faction with some real march in their step. Especially so when you pull alliances together. They're not the best for the Mojave, no one is, but if I was somehow able to get Moore and Oliver booted from the Mojave campaign, I feel like I could be presuaded to be 100% on these guys. Lots of good people here and it feels good to help them out unlike Legion where they're all boring murderers or House who I struggle to trust.

This is what I wanted in a protagonist. They treat you like a veteran soldier or a respected figure, but not too much as them kissing your feet or worshipping you like some idol. They treat you like a valuable friend and not some chosen one who's sent by gods who can do ALL the work for them.

You're not some mythical figure to the npc's but just someone who can help them enough to contribute to their efforts without invalidating theirs. You have your limits without undermining other established characters' achievements. It's believable and realistic.

I imagine the NCR views the Courier as an outsider loyal to the ideals of the NCR and as someone who is willing to become a citizen. So the soldiers and officers treat him/her as part of the group even if the Courier isn't technically a citizen.
At least the courier got the highest civilian branch.

Uh, I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather have my one courier than an entire battalion of ANY of the factions' troopers, even the Enclave Remnants. They should be reacting like the Marines in Halo do when the MC shows up.

I think that is because they expected people to have actually done some things before heading to the Frontier. I could understand the reaction if my character had just come from the Divide. I don't think the Frontier is meant for a brand new character.

Like you get mentioned by Mr. New Vegas on the radio and even then they describe you as just some person. Sure Hanlon does say "youre that courier folk" but as just your occupation rather than a title.

It is absolutely incredible that the people that made fallout new Vegas was able to put this much content in the game in like 2 months. I however am very sad that they didn't allow you to enlist in the NCR military.
Honestly that would have been a terrible idea, being part of the military means following orders without saying anything, imagine going around doing patrols and not much else, just waiting for the Legion to show up so you can shoot with your crappy service rifle at them and pretend you have a chance.
hey now, the service rifle got one hell of an upgrade after they realized it was a lot weaker than it was supposed to be and patched it. Also, the available modifications seriously upgrade it further.

I think the NCR radio might honestly be even more useless than the Minutemen artillery support. Artillery might take a while to warm up but at least they fuckin deliver. When the NCR radio actually wants to work, they only ever send like one dinky soldier, after a few hours of course. Bureacracy, huh?

My biggest problem with the NCR is how they have so much plot armour in fallout games. To me the Enclave had half the plot armour of the NCR and BOS they would not have lost war. To me the Enclave who has space stations with nukes, massive air force, massive army and could have a massive merc if Enclave takes over New Reno.

What i hate is that you cant properly join a Faction. besides the BoS wich makes no sense and has almost no value. Well you can mention it to the Follower Guy in Helios One. Oh and you cna join the Kings. And get a Haircut.
It makes sense though, and I think it might be partially deliberate to avert the 'absentee guild member' trope for once.
In Skyrim you can stay guildmaster/harbinger/archmage of like 5 factions without ever seeing a single member of the faction again for the rest of your life. That's just not realistic. You're not a meaningful part of the faction at all, let alone a valuable part of the leadership.
Meanwhile New Vegas handles the idea of a wandering protagonist very well. You're an independent contractor known for having worked with your chosen faction, but you're not really part of NCR's chain of command and you're not really a legionnaire. That explains why you can still dick around the Mojave or sign up to guard a Zion caravan etc without getting into trouble with your bosses. The only true 'boss' you could be said to have (if you choose that path) is House, and House gives you a lot of leeway and freedom to accomplish your tasks.
Imo the faction reputation system is an incredible idea, since it accurately describes the average RPG protagonist's relationship with factions. I'm just pretty surprised that it isn't repeated for Fallout 4.

It's amazing how they accounted for different lines of dialogue according to your reputation with different characters. It is especially with someone like Ranger Ghost where in a standard playthrough you are only neutral with the NCR when you reach her.

I can never help myself from siding with the NCR. Once you really get the ball rolling they really come around on you and you can see them come alive and become a proper functioning faction with some real march in their step. Especially so when you pull alliances together.
They're not the best for the Mojave, no one is, but if I was somehow able to get Moore and Oliver booted from the Mojave campaign, I feel like I could be presuaded to be 100% on these guys. Lots of good people here and it feels good to help them out unlike Legion where they're all boring murderers or House who I struggle to trust.
