Hi @Mujcanal thank you for your comment. The local history group in Naas has covered information on Oldtown and the DeBurgh family previously, they are a good place to start. There are numerous books that have also covered Oldtown Demense and Thomas Burgh who was the one who came to Oldtown. I have done a huge amount of research myself with the help of my father who has worked at Oldtown since 1978 and is still there. He worked for Major DeBurgh and now the present owners and has a wealth of knowledge on its history. I lived at Oldtown for 30 years and was lucky enough to hear firsthand its history from the Major and Mrs DeBurgh over the many years I was there. So if you like you can email me for further information, my email address is sarahjane_murphy@yahoo.com
      Kindest regards
      Sarah Jane.

    Very interesting!
    Is Oldtown House still inhabited?

Thank you Toby, glad you enjoyed it. Yes it has new owners, the last descendants of the De Burghs passed away a few years ago and new owners took the house and some of the lawns. However the woods of Oldtown have been passed to the Council of Naas and will be opened to the public shortly.

@@sarahjanemurphy8451 thanks! Because the woods/park looks pretty derelict from the outside, I was wondering if the place was still inhabited at all.
Even more intriguing that apparently noone from the widely-scattered de Burgh family (descenants of which still exist) had any interest in buying the house.

@@AnCeoltoir Yes they changed hands in 2017 when Mrs. De Burgh died and management of the woods ceased and went to the council. I know that there are plans in the ppieline to get it ready for opening and they will be back to their fabulous state, ready for the public to enjoy. They are just currently closed at the moment until everything is ready. In terms of the existing family, yes they are alive but they all have their own estates to run and I suppose the Major had to make the difficult decision at the time of not carrrying on the estate. Either way and most importantly, his wish that the grounds be opened to the public will be honoured.
