We take on one of Norway's most notorious hikes: Kjerag Bolton! Would you stand up there on a boulder wedged between two cliff faces 1000m above the fjord?!?! We have to use chains to climb up slippery granite boulders and trek across frozen rivers and deep snow. The hike is a lot scarier than Iz anticipated...

    Who are we? 💁🏼‍♀️
We're Tom and Iz, who live and travel in our van La Bamba. You might find Tom in the forest IDing a mushroom, fixing something or starting an ambitious project with his laid-back relaxed approach whereas you could find Isabel cooking up a storm, sunning herself on a beach and being a busy, energetic bee with her endless enthusiasm and positivity! We are total opposites but it works!
How did we end up here?! 😁 ⏮
We met 10 years ago when we were both finishing our A-levels and had a whirlwind summer romance, hitch-hiking around France together before before going our separate ways to travel and to university. We've both always prioritised travel and adventure and have worked hard over the years in hospitality jobs to enable us to keep exploring.
Tom hitch-hiked across Europe and road tripped around Australia whilst Iz studied Environmental Science at York. Iz backpacked around South America with her sister whilst Tom studied Forestry at Aberdeen University. Little did we know we just weren't going to get each other out of our minds! Fast forward 4 years later, we found ourselves in campsite warden job, living in a bell tent in a wild flower meadow together! Maybe without realising this was the start of our van life journey!
Next, we both trained to be science teachers and during training, we bought a van, ripped out it's interior and converted it to live in it. Iz managed to get a remote work-from-home job that she could do from the van and Tom was passionate about starting up a TH-cam channel.
Since then we haven't looked back and when the pandemic allowed us to, we travelled to Spain, Portugal, Scotland, Ireland, Wales and around Cornwall. We are now on a big European road trip! We are giving it our best shot to do TH-cam full time. We have a dream of one day owning a little plot of land and building ourselves a cabin in the woods. If you're new around here you can check out our previous videos; we've been uploading weekly videos for the last 9 months and are currently releasing DAILY VIDEOS.
Our message on our channel is to inspire others to do what they love as life is too short! We love living simply, freely with less stuff but more time!
Thank you so much for watching! If you enjoyed this video please consider LIKING this video and SUBSCRIBING to our channel! It would help us grow our channel 🌻

Wow, another great daily vlog. Absolutely no shame Izzy in not standing on that boulder, my legs were shaking just watching Tom do it. You did so well just doing the walk clinging on to those chains!! To be honest I would have been terrified just doing the drive up to the start!! Norway looks incredible, hope you enjoy the rest of your trip😀

I was there some years ago and I admit not having the courage to enter the boulder. Wec also saw the base jumpers in action. In any case, Kjerag is unbelievable.

I’m not being preachy but a pair of decent walking boots would be a great idea , just to help prevent a sprained ankle when you’re miles from help and it’s always great to take them off after a long hike ! Glad you were rewarded with the sun.

Wow what beautiful scenery. For someone who suffers from vertigo I think it’s amazing that you climb anything higher that a flight of stairs, so well done for even considering standing on that rock. I’ve been working my way through your adventures and it’s really enjoyable while also watching these latest daily vlogs, definitely a highlight of my day.

Izzy, you are an absolute star for doing any of that. Well done!! I don’t think I could get on that boulder either…felt sick watching that part, Tom! You have had such amazing adventures but that day must rank right up there with the best? I honestly feel big budget, major TV company travel programmes are going to seem so anodyne and utterly boring in future. There is an immediacy and present feeling in these and loads of us here have followed you for a while, so feel some sense of a connection. One of your very best, I think. Thank you and see you tomorrow!

So real, so as it is. Authentic is the word I am looking for, Tom you are a true warrior for testing the boulder glue! Izzy your fear is unbderstandable I did the Annapurna circuit some years ago and there were drop-offs that put my fear of heights into the pit of my stomach. Wire and wooden bridges crossing 300-foot ravines with a column of donkeys then deciding to cross from the opposite side as you were approaching the halfway point!! Really enjoyed this video you made us feel part of the day.

Wow, that's Norway from it's best side. I once was down to Lysebotn, realizing I was running out of fuel. A very gentle Norwegian helped me out - God bless him - so I could make the journey back to my hytta in Setesdalen.
Just like you I went down to Lysebotn in the clouds and when I went up again, the sky broke up and I had one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. I remember every curve of the road, but I didn't make the way to Keragbolten.
    Maybe next time...
I appreciate your journey, have a great trip and please more footage like this :-)
    All the best for you!

May 1 2023: Very good discussing mental health and to make all aware. In the military I would tell my soldiers that it takes someone with so much courage to recognize this. To not think what someone thinks of you it is you that is a priority. Oh my the road is windy and weather is as always cold. The hike up had the rope to assist. Very good with the advice of whether or not someone should challenge this. What a view even through the mist.

If I'm not mistaken, those stone steps were laid by hired sherpas from Nepal, and they were well-paid for the work. But some tourists take slabs as "souvenirs", thus ruining the stairs...

I have been to Kjerag many times over the years. I stood on Bolton once, thinking that, OK, I should just get that out of the way. There's so much more interesting and fun, and beautiful, about the hike than that silly rock. Just skip it and enjoy the view. I'm impressed that you did the hike so early. I always go later in July and August.

  • @OllyJelleyWildlife
    @OllyJelleyWildlife 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Pre-disclaimer, not a rant, just sharing a POV from a ton of time in the mountains! I think the thing with the boots is, as much as they can do it yes, victorian explorers won't be calling on other people's resources (mountain rescue eg) if they f**k up by not quite being prepared. Those boots slip off so easily at the wrong angle, and those are some high consequence slips 😬. Just make a note to get yourselves some Meindl's, Hanwags or something solid, they'll last you forever and you'll have a hell of a nicer time too!

I took initiative and went up there with a few friends some years ago. I am not particulary afraid of hights, but when I got up to the top and looked over the cliffs I decided then and there that: "NOPE! I am not going out on that boulder!"
Two of my friends did, and took a picture. I was worried sick to my stomack about them falling down. It still gives me the creeps to think back on it. If anything had happened I wonder if their families would have ever forgiven me for having dragged them up there in the first place.
Other than that it was an amazing experience!

One thing I love about The Kjerags Bolt and the Pulpit Rock is that there's no security harnesses or fencing or anything that ruins the risk of braving the challenge. Nature can be relentless and we're not imposing our safety concerns on it. You wanna take a look? Go for it, at your own risk :D

The number of rescues every year because if ill equipped tourists not realizing the dangers of the mountains and the sometimes rapidly deteriorating weather... There you go...

My testicles ached so bad they hurt watching you on that boulder. There is no way I could watch anyone standing on it never mind getting near it myself.

Ice cleats snow grips, that you can stretch over your boots, I always have them with me when hiking in the winter, Although I did not have any when hiking in the snow in Norway either

That's spectacular scenery! Thank you so much for doing the trek. Yea, I'm pretty ok with heights but I don't think I would have walked/crawled out on to that boulder.

Appriciate Louise for sharing her feelings. Yet, i see her standing too close to the edge. I see Thomas climbing on the wedged rock.
Please, dont do anything risky just for the sake of a youtube film. You dont have to prove anything to anyone.
    I want you safe.
I love you, as you are.

When did you do this hike? We are leaving tmrw for Trolltunga Hike, and hoping not to have same weather as you, cheers

Like 3 days ago. We have been advised by our Norwegian friends it is probably a bit early in the year to do trolltunga, hope it’s okay for you. Stay safe

Trolltunga trail information are recommending only doing it with snowshoes or skis right now. It would be doable on foot but will obviously take that much longer and it is already a long hike! Also the road up is closed for roadworks most of the day Monday to Friday until the 3rd of June, there is a window to get up around 10am but this isn't really early enough to do the hike and get back in time. I can highly recommend hiking out and camping near Trolltunga, and hike back the next day, no worries about timescales then and you miss the queues, but obviously you need some reasonable winter camping kit.

Actually going out onto the rock isn't too bad, as you face the rock wall.
Its when you turn to go back that you are staring into the abyss and vertigo hits you with a hammer.
Btw. just next to the Bolt itself is a good place for basejumping, and its just unreal when you see people voluntarily jumping off from there and landing a kilometer farther down.
