    You can copy and paste the contract template into your own, new google doc (or whatever else you want to use) - PLEASE do not request edit access to the document as it will not be granted.

    It’s also good to include a Point of Contact in the contract - basically an “I won’t take revisions from anyone else” clause. It really helps out when suddenly there’s a lot of fingers in the creative pie.

      Please tell more.....

    • @kindadorkyfuntimes
      @kindadorkyfuntimes 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@rdstudios-production I can’t remember exact wording, but having a section that includes a name (most likely the person paying, but sometimes appointed person, ie might be a creative director if dealing with a business) that states that only revisions asked for by the named person will be actioned.
      It gives you something to fall back on if suddenly another person becomes involved in the project and has opinions. I’ve found with creative projects that they tend to get shown around to gather opinions, and it’s good when/if those opinions come to you that you have a guideline on when you do or don’t action. If you receive one, you can then query with your point of contact to get approval before actioning.

      @@kindadorkyfuntimes Hey man, super helpful. Keeps all thos cooks out of the kitchen. I always ask who are the decision makers and what is your process? Nobody ever has a process for stuff like this but it forces them to fake it and create one. I then will ask for timely and consolidated feedback so that when jan the janitor asks about that drone shot I would say "hey let's wait until you have all of your thoughts in one place otherwise the editor (me) will charge us extra. hahahaha

      @@DeZzBeZooked I can't give you an exact figure because it all depends on the details of the job but if you are a beginner, to be fair, you should be charging less than someone who has more expereince than you. To give you a base price, the average editor in the USA charges around $27.50 per hour. So you're rate would be a bit less.

    You are so right about contracts, I have been doing editing since the Betacam days and there are so many people that "Con" you even friends! I once shot an entire movie as one camera man and was told that I was to edit with all the other camera shots taken elsewhere. The video work took many months and all the shots were shown to the producer before deciding on the play list. I had all the original footage on tape and disk, only to be told that the whole project was to be sent to another editor... and please send us all your footage ! What? No pay for my work? I still have the footage as I refused to give it to them but what good is it to me, Zip!

    I recently started, on the 22nd I'll have my current editing job for a month. I cannot tell you how important a contract is, and I wish I got one. It is crucial that in a job both the employer, and the employee/freelancer have the same expectations. I agree with the opinion that you should especially do it if you're working for a friend like I am. Get the contract, it'll save you from being fired.

    Don't undercharge yourself...think of every single thing...and mark it up x5...An example: your client wants you to edit a project and you have to download clips to your harddrive which eats up 500gb. Then either the client must purchase an external HD or you can do it for them for a fee. If you have to store it then tack on an extra $500 to $1000 per month. Seriously, just like storage facilities, they store you items and charge, except video is way more valuable. Once that moment is gone its gone forever, not like clothes or furniture which can be acquired again. Artist /Creatives lets not let people get over on us. Remember God is a creator!

    I made this simple for me with 25/75 rule, it means 25% clints you get should reject you thinking your are charging more then you should. And 75% should agree on it. If you balance this you good to go.

    really great video, I'm always struggling with this. Everytime. I don't want to charge so much when working with friends but I have to pay rent, too. After watching this video, I'm certain, that I charge way to little... I have to step up my game..

      It's a negotiation at the end of the day... you have your price and the client has theirs... if you are too proud to work for "less than you're worth" then you'll never make any money or get any gigs... It has to work for both sides, and not many people realize that.

    Thank you so much boss! Loved the video! Really helped me out. Starting to do editing on my own instead of for another company. It’s time.

    Your opinion applies to anything related about creative work, thank you! and it's funny you mentioned friends as one of the worst people to do business with, I think we all have that friend that ask for free stuff at least once in our careers hahaha
