  • The first half of an originally hour-long weeknight newscast from channel 9 in Los Angeles (the source tape ran out). Commercials are included.
The station changed call letters to KCAL-TV in December of 1989, following it's purchase by the Walt Disney Company.

1979 is no question the best year of my life, even my bad days were great as a kid. I miss my brother so damn much, I just wish I could go back and time and be with him just one more day!

I remember--this ran from early in my junior year of high school to early in my senior year. We watched Reagan's inauguration in government class.

Funny, a reporter gives an unsubstantiated false report, and the station apologizes.... my, how times have changed!

Channel 9 as KHJ before KCAL. Historic station...anyone remember George Putnam? So popular in the 60's his newscast was called "The George Putnam News".

@Kirk Moore I think Putnam was fairly conservative. I think he would have agreed with the President on a border wall.

0:31 This might be the wackiest commercial on TH-cam. ;)
1:41 The voice of Michael Bell for Datsun.
11:25 TV commercials for radio stations are always fascinating.
    25:46 Frenetic! LOL!
26:46 This Thrifty jingle and voice-over is straight out of an SNL skit.

Wow, how many stations had a version of that set? I can think of WFTV in Orlando and WSBT in South Bend right off the top of my head.

wonder if RKO got a discount on that set...this looks very similar to the set for KHJ's sister station in NYC, WOR....

Even today local stations owned by the same company all have similar sets

so that weber's world chick would be closing in on 70 now? and datsun...what's with all the thick butts and guts? you'd think it was a weight loss ad.

The News used to actually report "controversies" and versions of a story other than the police version?

I know this was 1979 and KHJ wasn't a network affiliate but the graphics are non existent and the set looks like something from the early 1960's. The talent is very good but when the first anchor was on I kept seeing the lady moving on the left side of the screen durning his close up. That's distracting and sloppy TV. Surprised this was on in LA.

RKO appears to have been working its way toward a network before the license revocations.
