    Yes, I remember my grandmother always used to say: "buy cheap, buy twice" Of course nobody wants to throw money out of the window unnecessarily. But I've always found it a good general rule to get the most expensive thing you can afford. (Ash's John Lobb boots will last him 25 years with a couple of rebuilds! In the same time he would have gone through at least 20 pairs of budget boots! :-D)

      My dad had a similar quote, lol. He would say "you buy cheap, you buy again".

    Absolutely. My wardrobe is complete but now I replace even some pieces with some even much higher quality ones. Slowly by slowly elevating the quality instead of increasing too much the volume of items (when can you wear them all).

    Buy once cry once. And then enjoy the high quality item for years to come. It's a lesson which took me some time to learn the hard way, but it is a very valid hypothesis for sure. Good work with the video 👍

    I like to wear Timex watches. Lots of different classical and modern styles to choose from and quite traditional for an American to wear.

    Agree with most of them but the wristwatch. I've always seen a watch as a practical item, rather than jewlery and when I was in the Air Force I reassured that vision when I saw high ranked officers with THAT Casio 😂😂😂 and mine being an Invicta 9307 for the last 15 years. Naturally I'd like to have a Rado Jubile (most beautiful watch I've ever seen and a piece of art itself) but if it tells the hour, date and have a chronograph, is just enough.

    Good advice Ash. I have always tried to buy quality where and when I can. Back in the early 80s I used to buy work boots 20 $30 a pair and go through them in a year. Then around 1983 I decided to buy some good Red Wing boots. They lasted me for 10 years at $100 for the pair that was good value for money. Cheers Ron

    Good advice. I have found that a mirror shine on any shoe improves its look, even a full brogue. The shine comes through. And leather looks better, feels better, and does last a long time. I had a portfolio finally start to fall part after 52 years of service. I don't think canvas would last so long. And leather is water resistant. A light coat of polish on a portfolio, travel bag or briefcase works wonders - and improves the look of the item.
    Great video Ash, good stuff!

    I agree completely about sweaters and overcoats. Only 100% wool. Also love a Navy peacoat as a good cool but not quite cold weather casual coat. They are worth the money as they last forever. Same with shoes and boots. Also LOVE my leather jacket!

    Ash, you know how much I look forward to my Saturday Chap’s Guide video. Nice to see you again. To your very comprehensive list, I would add a tweed jacket, and a nice pair of boots (handmade by William Lennon in Derbyshire - not cheap but all but indestructible).
    See you next week.

    Great video Ash! Hit the nail on the head with this one! I always say ‘slow style, not fast fashion’. Another great lower priced classic watch is a vintage Omega Seamaster, mine is from 1954 and is just a workhorse for me! I love the video thumbnail too, as one of my favourite ties is my grandfather’s Benson and Clegg Royal Artillery tie, conservative but surprisingly striking. Keep up the fantastic work!

    Hey Ash, I would dispute the better performance of man made materials, whilst that may be the case for a while, they loose the benefits such as waterproofing over time, need maintenance to restore it, and will inevitably degrade. If looked after properly leather can be maintained well, and whilst not perhaps as waterproof, will take to maintenance I thing on par or better, all whilst looking better as it ages.

    Hi Ash, great video as always. I have fallen into the knitware trap of buying nice looking, but basically plastic knitware. Don't make that mistake now.
    Can I ask you about trench coats? I have been looking for one for a while, but I am just not sure what to expect when it comes to the material?

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Its important to remember that no raincoat will come anywhere near matching the performance of a modern synthetic fabric, but personally, I always opt for cotton/gabardine (or blended) raincoats. I have a couple (1 in blue and 1 in beige) which cover me for all eventualities. If you purchase one with a removable liner, who will also be covered for the cooler time of the year.
      I may put out a rainwear video in th autumn - thanks for your idea.
      Best regards - Ash

    Hi Ash, what do you think about barefoot shoes? I'm a bit on the fence now. I gave them a try and I really like the free feeling in them, plus they help to regain natural posture and in general are good for health...but I also got 10 pairs of goodyear welted shoes...and to be honest, they don't feel as comfortable, but I prefer the look of those.. what's your opinion on that topic? Keep up the good work!
    Daniel

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Daniel, a great question and one that I may explore more fully in a future Q & Q video. My initial thoughts are that BF shoes are a much more natural type of footwear and clearly will be very comfortable and offer a number of health benefits.
      Whilst some do look passable for semi-formal attire, in the most part they are less formal and look very casual due to their simple structures and construction.
      Personally, I think a well made, Goodyear welted shoe will always win out in the formal stakes and it would be a brave man who retired them from their wardrobe.
      I suggest keeping the BF shoes for casual use and maintained that fleet of GW shoes for the formal situations in your life.
      Best regards,
      Ash

    You're better off with a good quality pair of boots, Red Wing or any Pacific Northwest brand like Nicks. Quality selvedge jeans, Ironheart etc. A quality jacket from Filson etc. Wear a mechanical watch and a carry a knife. You'll look great and be ready for anything. Don't wear a suit everyday, it's a sure sign you aren't living right. Get outside.
