@Rob G So? What does that tell you? What he was doing wasn't working. If he moves away from the wall then it allows the ball more space to gain height. Not saying that stopping the ball was the right thing to do because it obviously requires less skill. But if Hutton gave it some thought then he'd have realised that he needed to move to his left a bit more. Instead he just kept doing the same thing over and over.
