Every blast cabinet I’ve ever used had 2 things in common: the media tube was always jacked up where it connects to the gun, and they ALL had annoying surges of media. You have to find the “sweet spot” of air pressure to get the most consistent media flow, AND you have to keep the media as dry as possible. Humidity is the enemy! It causes the media to clump and “bridge over” so it doesn’t consistently keep falling down to where your pick-up tube is. And Media? I do a lot of projects like what you just did and aluminum oxide is all I use. It strips paint and rust and leaves a fine slightly textured surface that paint will really stick to. Glass beads are good, but IMO the surface is too smooth. And Definitely do NOT use black beauty unless you don’t care how bad the painter part will look. It is very aggressive.

Thanks for the video, very informative as I’m in the market for a sandblasting cabinet. Also the cyclone dust collector is a great idea. I noticed that your tractor appears to be a TO30. In Australia we know them as the TE20 or TEA20 as mine is. The “barbed” fitting that the hose blows off is actually not a barbed fitting but a Nitto brand quick connect hose fitting. I dislike these and use a quality (not Chinese) fitting on all my air equipment. The cabinet itself seems to be quite good so thanks again for the video.
Thank you for demonstrating on how to build a cyclone. I have that size cabinet. Haven’t put it together yet. I was wondering how to control the dust. I was told to make sure the cabinet is sealed well too.

Somehow missed this video last year. Anyways, here's an eyeopener for you: the instructions for the HF Cabinet are WRONG! the side port on the cabinet is NOT the vacuum port. The rear one is the vacuum connection, that's why there is that metal duct on the inside of the cabinet....to force the air/media mixture to enter the bottom, then travel up to the top to be vacuumed out. It also allows the media to fall out before being vacuumed out, so not nearly as much media gets vacuumed out. Cyclone is still a good thing to have, because you will still get some media, just not nearly as much as vacuuming out the side port. The side port is the air INLET. Switch your connections around and notice what a difference it makes. You can also get a metering valve upgrade that feeds the media from the bottom of the cabinet funnel to the gun instead of having to siphon it through that stupid pick-up tube. You're probably going to get 3x the media flow, and more consistent flow, by upgrading to the metering valve/gravity feed add-on. Do the vacuum correction and add the metering valve mod and it will be an altogether different performing machine. You won't believe it.

When that hose blowed off while you was using it, I lost it when you threw the gun down. Probably good thing there wasn’t audio there. Lol. I’m sorry to laugh at your calamity but I’ve been there working with stuff.
Lol, hose barb. That’s actually a quick disconnect fitting used in Asia. I see them on the supply connections for Japanese machines. Replacing that with a real hose barb should solve that problem.

I learned to burp the gun. Hold your glove over the outlet of the gun and stop the air from coming out the end. This forces air back down the pick up tube and unclogs it. It will also collapse the Doodle Bug funnel holes you can get when using glass beads.
If hafta fix this & that on a new machine...??.... Harbor Freight and suppliers don't deserve praise. Not a great little machine but a "rebuild" project.
I wondered what media you going to use, then saw you loading the walnut shell media and knew you were going to be a while. LOL Try some Black Beauty from TSC, it WILL remove the paint and rust quickly, but be careful it will also slowly remove the base metal. Test it out on an aluminum soda can to watch it eat its way through. When your media feed clogs up a quick bump of the nozzle tip against the palm of your hand (with trigger squeezed) will back blow the feed line usually clearing it so you can continue blasting. Run a grinder around that hose barb and give it some "tooth" that might hold that hose on better.
Hey Warped, I'm using the black beauty from TSC. My cabinet is set up correctly and the guns not picking ANY media up through the intake tube. Any suggestions?
@@awolo06 Don't get mad, but IS there suction at the media pickup end of tube? If not, there may be blockage in the intake tube or a problem with the gun itself. The media pickup works off a venturi in the gun.

Not sure how that particular cabinet is setup, but usually the suction end of the hose can be pulled back out of the pickup channel a bit to sort of "meter" the flow of the media. Maybe fiddling with it there might get you a consistent (usable) flow out of the gun.

Do you think course grit walnut shell would work a little better than the fine grit that you used? I just bought the cabinet so I could spray my spike lugs on my truck. Just bought a H/F 40 # sand blaster unit..a one guy assemble is difficult and the manual is poor at best..had to backtrack on the screws as I used the wrong screws in assemble..easy to get the different screws mixed up.. I assembled the lower shelf upside down to keep stuff from being knocked off.. Good vid showing problems and upgrade fixes.. Thx..
Woodworkers make cyclones from 55 gal drums. The different ways they have been made are as different as those who make them. Don't hold up small things in the fingers of one glove and blast it with the other. The gloves will wear out and faster than you would think. You might not notice it until the hole opens. Eventually, the window glass will become so pitted you won't be able to see.

They are well worth the price. Think of it like a project car. Not much to start with. But once you start modifying the car it turns into something great. I would only upgrade the media siphon tube, the glass, the lighting, the gun, the hardware it comes with and silicone every seam when assembling.

I bet you have the perfect hose clamp that will work on the so called barbed fitting . Wire . use it where the grove is and it will squeeze the hose into grove. I have air hoses that I have repaired out on jobs. Ram a quick coupler into the hose and use wire as a clamp. Works like a charm. Some of them have lasted 10 years or so.
Good addition to the shop. I've used walnut shell media for polishing my brass when reloading, probably best for softer metals and just polishing. I've used fine grade sand...easy to damage the base metal fore sure. With all this sun, how is your new crop of hay doing?
How is your long term with it? I have a ton of mods on mine including a metering valve, typhoon + vacuum, revised glass mount, mounted on a rolling cart and custom lighting. I will say even though its fully sealed its VERY leaky. I need to track down leaks at the 4 corners. The door I had to reseal. I blocked all the door depressions that trap media. Every time I open the door sand pours out. I tried adding a lip "gasket" that helped a bit but sand still gets behind it. I'm not sure any of this would be solved with a more expensive cabinet to be honest. I'd have to check the design in person now that I've got extensive experience with this one and know its flaws. I will say I've blasted a TON of stuff. I probably have 25-30 hours of blasting on it so it has more than earned its keep despite the issue I've highlighted. Very useful albeit flawed cabinet.
if someone hasn't already told you, that fitting you are complaining about is a nitro stile air tool fitting it requires a female nitto to connect to. was there a fitting left over in the box or maybe it was left out. as this is a very common air tool fitting you can pick up a female one anywhere.
I’ve got the same cabinet that’s still sitting %100 stock from HF so it looks like I need to check my hose barb fitting And make the dust collector. I haven’t used it yet .
I have my tools...and I have HF tools I lend out to my friends...lol.I have a serious soft spot for those tools....I mean, if I lose a HF tool out in the field (falls off the ATV) so what? I'll pick up another one......But lose grandpa's lucky wrench, lose my favorite screw driver??? Heck no.Just a pointless story because you reminded me of it. :)In 1985, a thief left behind the screwdriver he used to steal my stereo out of my truck. I was 21.I swore I would keep that screw driver and stab him with it if I ever found out who he was......Of course I was never able to figure out who did it.....and honestly, that screwdriver has done more work for me than that stereo ever would have. I still have the screw driver, and probably still have it because I was a lil hot head back in the day and didn't want to lose it for the wrong reasons. I should treat all my tools so carefully. :D
At my high school we have one of these. Make sure you keep the window nice because just after a year you can't even see inside without having to put your nose up to it.
you had better luck than me. i couldn't get this to pickup the sand at all. just a few little spurts here and there. i tried cole slag and sifted sand, neither worked and i tried many pressure settings. i purchased another gun but haven't received it yet. l also had the same problem with the air hose popping off, i covered the barb with some epoxy i had laying around and that took care of the problem for now. i hate when you buy something new and then have to put more money into it just to get it to work.
Great video but FYI that's a pneumonic fitting, it is not designed for a hose clamp. It's designed for a coupler. That should have included a barb or hard ware for the pneumatic coupler
Sae this and got one..cant seem to get media to flow thru siphon tube...no clogs or leaks not sure whats going on..not pulling much vacuum is my best guess
Grat video thanks, but I think that the hose connector is a male pulling and not a barbed fitting. I would try a female coupling on the other end before changing.
I am not sure how the blasting works. Is it like the pipe/hose (near the tip of the gun ) goes inside the filled up media in the cabin, which is then sucked/blasted after hitting the trigger? Thank you
Most guys use a paint stripper to remove the bulk of the paint before blasting. Paint can be very difficult to sandblast off and it also can degrade your blasting medium pretty rapidly.
Hi. Another good video. Two things to consider: 1) Try glass beads for paint removal; 2) ALWAYS clean any grease or oil from a part before blasting-if you don’t, you’ll soon gum up your medium and, possibly, the cabinet and its working parts. I normally use lacquer thinner.
I had trouble with the air line hose clamp that hooks to the gun as well. I eventually just replaced the clamp that came with it. Im still having trouble getting much media out of the gun? Im using 8 gallon tank for air, is that not enough?
I got a used one. Only thing i did different was paint the inside with thick white rustoleum with a brush. Makes it much brighter inside.

You don't want to point the nozzle at the glass, but it will get "fogged" up over time. And don't put anything damp inside the cabinet.

if someone hasn't already told you, that fitting you are complaining about is a nitro stile air tool fitting it requires a female nitto to connect to. was there a fitting left over in the box or maybe it was left out.
as this is a very common air tool fitting you can pick up a female one anywhere.
I’ve got the same cabinet that’s still sitting %100 stock from HF so it looks like I need to check my hose barb fitting And make the dust collector. I haven’t used it yet .
I have my tools...and I have HF tools I lend out to my friends...lol.I have a serious soft spot for those tools....I mean, if I lose a HF tool out in the field (falls off the ATV) so what? I'll pick up another one......But lose grandpa's lucky wrench, lose my favorite screw driver??? Heck no.Just a pointless story because you reminded me of it. :)In 1985, a thief left behind the screwdriver he used to steal my stereo out of my truck. I was 21.I swore I would keep that screw driver and stab him with it if I ever found out who he was......Of course I was never able to figure out who did it.....and honestly, that screwdriver has done more work for me than that stereo ever would have. I still have the screw driver, and probably still have it because I was a lil hot head back in the day and didn't want to lose it for the wrong reasons. I should treat all my tools so carefully. :D
At my high school we have one of these. Make sure you keep the window nice because just after a year you can't even see inside without having to put your nose up to it.
best and cheapest way to prevent window scratch up is to use a clear plastic film on the inside of the window.
its easily replaceable and cheap.

you had better luck than me. i couldn't get this to pickup the sand at all. just a few little spurts here and there. i tried cole slag and sifted sand, neither worked and i tried many pressure settings. i purchased another gun but haven't received it yet. l also had the same problem with the air hose popping off, i covered the barb with some epoxy i had laying around and that took care of the problem for now. i hate when you buy something new and then have to put more money into it just to get it to work.
At 8:46, that's not a barbed fitting, it's a NITO airline fitting as used in Australia for air tools
Great video but FYI that's a pneumonic fitting, it is not designed for a hose clamp. It's designed for a coupler.
That should have included a barb or hard ware for the pneumatic coupler
is there a way to install some type of dehumidifier on it to prevent clogs? Just my 2 cents.
A good idea is to add a water separator on the air line at the cabinet
Sae this and got one..cant seem to get media to flow thru siphon tube...no clogs or leaks not sure whats going on..not pulling much vacuum is my best guess
Grat video thanks, but I think that the hose connector is a male pulling and not a barbed fitting. I would try a female coupling on the other end before changing.
I am not sure how the blasting works. Is it like the pipe/hose (near the tip of the gun ) goes inside the filled up media in the cabin, which is then sucked/blasted after hitting the trigger? Thank you
Most guys use a paint stripper to remove the bulk of the paint before blasting. Paint can be very difficult to sandblast off and it also can degrade your blasting medium pretty rapidly.
What about filling the bucket with a couple gallons of water so that the dust hits the water first?

Hi. Another good video. Two things to consider: 1) Try glass beads for paint removal; 2) ALWAYS clean any grease or oil from a part before blasting-if you don’t, you’ll soon gum up your medium and, possibly, the cabinet and its working parts. I normally use lacquer thinner.
I had trouble with the air line hose clamp that hooks to the gun as well. I eventually just replaced the clamp that came with it. Im still having trouble getting much media out of the gun? Im using 8 gallon tank for air, is that not enough?
